Player Watch Pick #16 (2016) - Todd Marshall

The irony with Frampton was Ford Fairlane and I were discussing he would of been a useful inclusion a
Few years back at a game of ours in Ballarat, but Kenny just refused to play him.

As we’ve seen with Hayes ‘having’ to play and Rozee getting more time in the middle, how things change when you get to see the possibilities.

If only he had been 176cm. But then it would have been easy to call for his selection.

But to paraphrase JFK, we make these calls not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

Fun fact.

Charlie has only had multiple games with 5+ goals in a single season once while at Port.

So with Todd's 2nd 5 goal haul this week he's matched Dixons 2 5 goal games in 2016 against the lowely melbourne and brisbane.

So yeah, the galaxy brain choice of rewarding leads appears to be how you get todd to kick a bag. who would have known.

You just hope the geniuses we have in the coaches box can implement the same style when Dixon is back.

It should be even easier to find the other key forwards in space because defenders will flock to Charlie. Bit of movement and decoy leads etc and with the 4 we have, we should be a very dangerous marking team up forward.

The commentators were talking a lot about who comes out for Dixon, but I don't see anyone needs to. Todd had 7 tackles yesterday and they're all pretty mobile. Chuck comes in and plays 2nd ruck as well IMO.

Yeah. I’m not convinced we’ve got better small / medium forwards sitting in the sanfl anyway.

We would just be dropping a tall for mcintee or Sam mayes. Why bother.

Just play Dixon as the 2nd ruck (which he is excellent at). If you don’t want to risk him at centre bounces get finlayson into a few centre bounces but Dixon to ruck around the ground at ball ups and throw ins.

The Showdown was a penny drop moment for Todd.

He's always had ability, but rarely played with purpose and intent. Last night was a complete believe in himself performance.

I think he genuinely believes in himself now.

Certainly helps with the ball coming in as it did last night rather than week after week of our cluster **** set up.

But all Todd needed to do was play with the intent he has this last month and the spoils will come.

Congrats to him.

I think he's the positive to come from the first 6 weeks with Sam Hayes & Rozee's development as mid the past fortnight.

Todd has had his detractors, rightly at times but since the Showdown he's realised he can do it at the elite level. I thought he was good last week against Carlton and didn't get the rewards, but last night he finally looked a real key forward at the AFL level. He played with intent like you posted, and if he does that every week he'll get the rewards more often then not.

It's a small sample size with Frampton as a defender but jeezus two weeks straight racking 20 plus in an effective defence, he keeps that up he's a bigger loss than Googal Howard ever was.

It’s really interesting what different circumstances can do….. Hayes is a good example.

It’s why Ken has been around too long, stuck in his own ways maybe.

I’m worried when Dixon comes back we will revert to said cluster $uck

Abba was alluding to George missing marks early, that he kinda needed to stop thinking and just play footy… something like that.

Does make you wonder why we don’t play to leading forwards more, we have to great leading forwards.

I’d leave Dixon up at CHF, keep him outside 50 - if he’s anywhere inside 50 we will just bomb it in guaranteed.

Todd’s confidence and self-belief will sky rocket if he can have these sorts of games especially with Dixon out.

I love Georgiades, but I have a lot more confidence of a good outcome when Todd has the ball in his hands.

I place a lot of value on finishing skills and his are as good as anyone we have. If he keeps working his opponents over, finding space, flying hard, tackling aggressively, then he will be a great asset.

You can tell his whole demeanour on field has changed by the look in his face. He actually looks serious now and like he's playing a game of football rather than the lost puppy look of previous years.

Nobody ever questioned the skillset with Hotty. The question mark has always been around whether he has the physical and mental hardness to play a tough position. He needs to keep playing like this and he'll have a good career.

Georgiades has regressed a little bit this year, especially his set shots, but that's just part and parcel of being a developing tall. He'll come good.

It's doubly bad for us when we're an inconsistent team with a generally dumb forward setup that doesn't help him at all.

By playing all 4 of them, there is less pressure and reliance on any of them individually. It's much better for development for someone like Mitch to be 3rd or 4th banana, like Jonathan Brown at Brisbane.

Two observations. 1) Todd Marshall was great - confident and aggressive with the skills to back it up. 2) Some posters do not know how to let go of a grudge.

Haven't seen billy play much this yr but I did call for him to play in defence when we were crying out for big defender's and good shit canned lol.
frampton had his career best game on the weekend. had a huge 3rd qtr with 3-4 intercept contested marks and looked solid in the air vs the dogs talls.
its interesting that the crows managed to get some decent performances out of him whilst we trashed him.

i thought mg looked great in the first half, he led well, marked well, led hurn to the ball, ran him ragged and out of position but messed up his disposals a bit and that cost him his confidence, as evidenced by the hand off when he should have had a shot. mg is close to a breakout game also if he can straighten up his kicking.
i reckon marshall has had a solid month of footy now. 2 goal less games where he competed very strongly and 2 five goal games to boot. gold.

He'd also had 2 more years of development than Marshall

Agreed on MG - while his finishing is off we are seeing more of the spring of heeled athlete that plays in front rather than the speccy merchant. He is averaging over 6 marks a game this year with about 2.5 of those contested - much higher in both departments than last year / over the journey. He is tracking nicely and could really be a beast in 2 or 3 years.

Hard to tell on tv but it looked like MG was playing much higher up the ground as a link man compared to Todd & Finno. I thought he (MG) played well in that role as connector.

Todd was excellent too.
