Pick 48- Jarrad Boumann

Re: Jarrad Boumann

I'm thinking of developing young players.. hence the draftees bit is what I'm interested in. Firstly, was Griffen one of Eade's draftees or did he inherit him? Second, I would add Williams, Higgins, Jones and Wood to the jury still out category - while they've shown glimpses, not one of them has been consistent in their career to date - which could be put down to injuries, coaching or other factors.

Which leaves us with Ward and Liberatore. One is no longer with the club. One is a son of a gun.

Of the Rookies, Morris was developed in VFL, not the AFL. Picken came in as a great tagger, but has stagnated some what since (at least some have suggested). Dahlhaus I'll grant.

Boyd, Cross, Gilbee, Lake, Hudson and Hall were all either already developed under Rohde, or were developed elsewhere not under Eade.

Either way, the jury is still out on most players drafted under Eade. I simply don't see how there is any proof that he was a good developer of players.

Individually you may be right, but a bunch of good players doesn't make a good team. Ultimately Eade developed the whole team very well.

Eade did a very good job considering when he took over we were not a very good team. The 3 years that we made the prelim final we were underdogs in all the matches we werent the best team. 2008 we were beaten by Geelong who were the best team despite losing to Hawthorn in the GF. 2009 was our best chance and we almost did it to make the GF but St Kilda I believe that season were the best side. 2010 we went into the finals series down on confidence.

Jarrad Boumann is a chance to debut Round 1. Given no Roughead and Gilham we are short on talls. He could start at FB/CHB or play that 'spare man in defense' type role to help out Gibson and Stratton. He is a long term player for us, just needs to add a little more muscle. He has great athletic ability, reads it well and surprisingly he can kick well and makes good decisions. He could be a real find for us this season. :)

I hope he does well. It was always recognised at the Dogs that he had ability.

I believe his delisting was more around off field issues. It appears that the delisting may have been the catalyst for him to turn around those attitude problems.

Hear, hear. Hope he does well.

FWIW, I think Eade did a pretty good job developing our talent. Because we were relatively successful under him he didn't really get that many 'goes' at early draft picks (only Jarrad Grant, who was pick 5).

Surely that we were relatively successful over the course of his 7 years indicates he was a fine developer of talent!

Consider Lake. He wasn't much of a player until latter 2005, which coincides to when Rocket's first season in charge.

That said, I didn't have a massive problem with him moving on at the end of last year, I think it had run its course...

He has come along way since 2010. He has matured a lot since being delisted. What has impressed me so far is his attidude to and willingness to improve and learn our game plan and follow team instructions. He looked very impressive during the Nab Cup so far. But the question i want to ask is, is he more a FB or a CHB player?

I'd classify him as similar to Ryan Hargrave, a rebounding tall defender that will provide a chop off or as a third man up. Although if he's worked on the physicality of his game, he could provide a role as an athletic CHB.

He will hopefully become that 'spare man defender' type like a Ryan Hargrave like you said, while at the same time help out Gibson, Schoey and Stratton against Collingwood Cloke and Dawes. Not stand one on one with them, but he will provide much needed height down back and creating a contest and stuff. Thanks for that. :thumbsu:

Accurate description of his style.

He'll never get close to Hargrave though, who when fit, is easily one of the best mid defenders in the league.

IIRC Boumann wasn't particularly hard at the contest, and this was his major downfall (aside from attitude issues). If he has to play on a decent KPP, especially Cloke or Dawes, I think he'd be hammered.

Lets not forget he is the only defender big Israel has actually got on top of in a game of footy. He will be a handy backup for the Hawks and has definitely improved since his Dog days, but not close to the BEST 22 at the Hawks just yet.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if Boumann can use his second chance to reach the level required. Like the Bulldogs with Williams, Hawthorn could certainly do with a 196cm defender.

Not playing CHB we wouldn't. Just because your team's comfortable playing a midget backline doesn't mean others should.

If you're trying to overlay 2011 excuses onto a decision made in 2004, sure. Height-wise, you have Brian Harris.

And as Butane said right after, we had only Lake as a tall defender at that point and even he hadn't come on yet. Even if he's struggled with injuries, Williams stood up for us in defense last year and he also had a good year in 2010 when he finally got some consistent games into him.

We needed a tall back in 2004 also. Lake was the only decent one on the list and we had a wealth of tough inside mids. So, no excuse needed, KPP over a mid was always going to be our priority after taking Griffen. I await your response in 5 months...

Meh, if you want to be really annoying you could say Hawks let Zac Dawson go and then didn't have defender over 6 foot and then were forced - some years later to draft a untried, ex-bulldog who never played a game for back up.

I'm just showing how stupid you can make arguments.
Hell, Markovic was on their list until the end of 2008 even though they were crying out for a tall defender. He was cut, was the best defender in the VFL in 2009 and we rightfully gave him a second chance by picking him up.

Good point.

Think I might consider Markovic as a trade for Boumann.
Can certainly live with that as we have the player who can influence a contest.

Wasnt Harris/Lake a KPF in Adelaide and was converted to defence by The Dogs? i got the impression he was a full forward/ Centre half Forward type.

He was recruited as a Full Forward back in 2001. Of course, that just makes our KPD stocks look even worse then what they were at the time.

Plus people need to remember that Matty Croft had retired that year and we needed another KPD. By recruiting Williams, we filled a position in which we were badly lacking.
