Player Watch Pick #51 (2017) - Kane Farrell

It seems he needs to work on finding the ball and defensive effort.

Similar to Amon back in the day, although Karlos was always good at getting the outside ball.

If he is to drop back to the twos, I wonder if he, like Williams, should be tried in the centre, at the feet of the ruck. Ask him to be accountable, to fight and hunt the ball and to improve the in close decision making.

Was playing some real good footy this year. Hope his recovery goes well and he comes back and becomes the next Robbie Gray

He was looking a million dollars before getting injured. Had some amazing touches, and was looking really good ... then whamo! I was looking forward to seeing what sort of game he was going to produce, so was really disappointed for him!

What's the expected return time for Farrell? As late as July 2022?

December (start of pre-season) would be 5 months post-injury. February would be 7 months post-injury.

I reckon at least half of 2022 he'll still be recovering and probably spend the rest of the season in the SANFL.

That’s probably partly why Motlop is getting a new 1 year deal.

I think Farrell is very much an AFL player. Hope he comes back like Gray in late 2013 and transitions from talented forward flanker to full time midfielder. Not sure he’ll win the coaches association best player 30 games later like Gray did but I think he can be a match winner for us.

Smaller players can return a little earlier ~ 10-11 months.

Hopefully he keeps that burst of pace and agility.

I think he needs to work on winning more of his own ball. If he can start winning 15-20 touches on a half forward flank and kicking a goal, it would be huge. I do wonder if he should be thrown into the middle at SANFL level, given a chance to work on some stoppage and clearance stuff.

Kane Farrell to return via the sanfl this weekend.

Welcome back Kane. 🙌

Hopefully comes back from his ACL the way that Robbie Gray came back from his. He's got the skill set to be an A grader, all that is missing is the attitude.

Ended his first game back on 17 touches, Was impressed with his first half as he was one of the leading possession getters for Ports at that point.

His boot is still a weapon at half fwd/wing while we move the ball towards the fwd line.

and speed

I’d give him a bit longer and encourage him to find lots of the ball at SANFL level for the next few weeks (25+ touches). He’s looking good though.
If Motlop or Rozee put in another stinker, or Gray is cooked early in the game again. It should be an easy decision.

Agreed. Motlop could have been shipped off 2 years ago and we wouldn't have noticed any difference. Gray look cooked last year and I can't see him having regular good games in the current forwardline. Rozee has put in far too many 15 touch 1 goal games that keep him in the team (because of potential) when it hasn't been good enough for players like Mayes, Woodcock, Farrell, Fredrick, etc to hold their place. Farrell is a genuine 'could be anything' with his speed (which hopefully hasn't diminished due to injury) and skills. Another SANFL game or 2 would help, but it would be another 'why did we resign him' if he doesn't get a decent look in over the next 3 months.
