Player Watch Pick #51 (2017) - Kane Farrell

I don’t get too carried away with these kind of goals. Him and Burton in particular are always on the lookout for these opportunities. They look great and impressive but that shit gets sorted out by opposition coaches at the pointy end.
I want to see how much they’ve improved defensively during the season.

Agreed, Farrell's goal in the first half was a sensational kick, but for the toast to make absolutely no attempt to block a 20 metre gap on the left side of a known prodigious left footer wasn't even Z grade defence.

The problem is, high and long also describes his forward 50 entries when kicking to players.

Bit hard to pinpoint a pass inside 50 when there are 34 players inside 50 at any given time and all of our players are instructed not to lead. His field kicking is flawless.

Carn his kicking is a thing of beauty. Would a glass of vinegar and a prickle sandwich perk you up.

Arguably he's the best kick in the comp... enjoy

Actually the specific instance I was thinking of the forward line was pretty open with guys on the move. But Farrell popped a high, loopy kick into the forward.

We're going to keep running with the stupid misquoting from that video clip? The team was running slow play drills aginst a set defencive unit. The kind of thing where trying to hit a lead up forward is asking to be intercepted.

People here would probably get upset at a clip of Hinkley telling someone not to play on quickly while they're running end of game drills for holding onto a lead.

Why are people talking like leading isn't a good idea in a slow play against a set defensive unit?

Multiple players leading in to gaps is exactly how you create holes in a set defensive unit if you want to break it up.

If you want to keep bombing it long to multiple set defenders on the proviso that if you do it enough eventually it might work then keep doing what we have been doing..

I agree, however I did notice Farrell make some excellent spoils including one on the last line of defence. A much improved player imo.

Yeh it is. Enjoy it while you can. He’s not gonna get that luxury of cruising in uncontested if we make finals.
I dont get it! Are you saying he hasnt improved? Have you watched any of the matches so far?

He has improved MASSIVELY! Defending better, making smarter choices, gut-running both ways. To me, until this year, he has been a fringe-player that was getting games because of his beautiful kick, but who offered little else.

So far this year, he has looked a different player ... Definite 22.

To someone that has never played before he makes it look like everyone should be able to kick 60 with ease

For such a small guy, relatively speaking, his kicking is just out of this world. He must have some serious high twitch muscle fibres going on in his legs.

He had a really good game on the weekend and his kicking is so fantastic that he almost needs a nickname better than Faz like the Velvet Boot or Striker or the Castlemaine Kid.

Instructed not to lead - what a load of bollocks. Dixon and Marshall multiple times lead into space and marked. JHF marked on the lead, there were many examples.

We had 25 marks inside 50 from 57 F50 entries. They weren't all contested marks from long kicks.

I like the Castlemaine Kid with his youthful appearance, but if that’s to long maybe just a simple Roller?

His not saying he hasn’t improved, we played a really weak Westcoast team which didn’t defend or setup well. Other better defensive/structured teams will restrict these long bomb opportunities.
With Kane’s second goal (mid last Qtr) he got the handball from Soldo & then ran 14-15 steps before kicking, Westcoast players were not rushing to shut the play down. That’s not to deride Kanes game, he played well & I believe he has improved this year - he could be AA quality HBF.

Yeah, if he is able to make time and space for himself when it is hard to and with that sweet boot, yeah, he could really do some serious damage.

11 marks on a lead according to the stats. Marshall 4 and JHF 2. Players do lead but we still go for the contested pack option more than I would like. I'd rather see someone target a one on one situation and just kick to advantage. There is no doubt that over the years players have been encouraged to kick long to Dixon because he will always at least bring the ball to ground.

Does anyone remember when it looked like Farrell would be a very good small/medium forward? Mostly due to his laser accurate goal kicking

I still don't get why we drafted so many forwards and turned them all in defenders / wingman, and then we turn our defenders into forwards.

Bergman, Williams and Farrell were all highly touted forwards, but instead we play DBJ down there

Maybe. Hard to stop when it could be any of Farrell, Burton, Houston or McKenzie.
