Surely clubs will covet KPD's this year to sure up their stocks given the inflated salaries some very ordinary KPD's were commanding this year i.e. Ben McKay.

Hell, even Adelaide were ready to plonk down $800k/year and some draft capital to poach Petty (busted foot and all).

It reminds me of how the league went stupid with the valuations of KPF's after the Bulldogs' paid Boyd $6m. It got so out of hand that it spooked the Saints into overlooking Trac and taking an asthmatic and diabetic McCartin. At the time, conventional wisdom was it was better to draft a KPF at the top end of the draft rather than forking out massive overs to trade for one down the line for when you are ready to contend.

With competition so even now, with finals winning/losing margins often under 2 goals, it just becomes imperative to have key tall bookends you can trust. Especially in defence, a shaky key defender is kryptonite in finals.

They are so hard to recruit later on and you pay through the absolute nose for them. If Curtin is gone I’ll be disappointed if we don’t pull the trigger on O‘Sullivan. They’re the only two at pick 6 who’ll make up for the disappointment of Jackson leaving imo.

Disagree with Watson's ceiling being elite (think he's pretty much now what he will be moving forward), O'Sullivan's disposal as above average (its fine for a taller guy but hardly in the same class as Leake) and Sanders disposal as above average (again its fine but not as good as Leake's). Other than that pretty good.

Don't know much about O'Sullivan but on those ratings wouldn't be upset at all if we came away with either Curtin or O'Sullivan with our first pick. I think it's worth giving ourselves a shot at a highly rated tall defender when there's two there rated around the mark.

Got a feeling we were looking at Leake more for pick 11, but it's sounding like there's a good chance he won't get there.

Starting to seem as though O’Sullivan is a better chance of making to 11 than Leake.

Possibly, although even though Leake is the flavour of the week at the moment it would be a real shame to leave two highly rated tall defenders on the board and risk coming away from the draft without one.

Clearly if we rate Leake as the best player on the board at our first pick we'll take him. But I'd be slightly surprised if that's the case.

I’m a fan of O’Sullivan - he just looks like the type of player you can build a whole backline around.

He’s got leadership credentials (Allies Captain), was the AA full back and he ran a 6.11 minute 2km time trial at the combine.

Excellent. Sounds a quite different player from Curtin, but if we get one of them it could fill an important hole in future years.

There will be a few likely midfield types around at our next pick, if we only have 2 picks and we've missed the absolute standout mids in the top 4, I think taking a good key position prospect makes sense.

The issue with O'Sullivan is like they say in the write up, hes actually not that great defensively one on one. Plays more like a tall Lever imo. Could that improve? Sure. But im not drafting him expecting him to be a lock down KPD, hell need someone else taking the #1 KPF I think.

Maybe O'Sullivan can be a Jeremy McGovern type. Think thats the best outcome. Reads the play well. Very good interceptor.

He’s 198cm and built like a brick. I reckon his defensive game (particularly in the air) will improve once he’s in an AFL system.

I’d be very happy if we got both Curtin and O’Sullivan to be honest.

Curtin not really likely to turn into a May type either, sounds like they're both more Lever/CHB replacements than full back. Which is fine, we can't expect to fill both future roles with one pick. And we are still developing Adams who is more of a full back prospect who we shouldn't write off yet.

I'd be happy enough with those two picks but it would exacerbate my anger at not cutting Schache so we could have another pick and try and get an outside mid as well.

Caddy measured a couple of cms higher at 193cm at the combine so whilst I’d prefer him at 11 than 6, I am more positive on him than I was a month or so ago.
Trust me I’d prefer him at 11 but Apart of me thinks he’s gone by then.
Obviously I could be very wrong, just the feeling I get!

Our first pick is a tricky prospect. Our midfield depth took a hit with Harmes, and Jordan leaving, and also Dunstan retiring. Then there is a the obvious Oliver issue, will he get back to form and sort himself out. So I wouldn't mind picking up one mid like Sanders, I really rate him as a close 2nd prospect to McKercher. If we left it to get one later, D.Wilson and C.Windsor are the next best picks, but it is more than possible they will also be gone before our pick #11.

However, with May and Tomlinson ageing and Petty a risk to go back home for 2025 one might argue our more immediate issue is a tall KPD. I was originally on board with Curtin, but there is talk now he doesn't want to leave WA. Is that confirmed? I think Curtin is stronger than O'Sullivan, but doesnt mean he couldnt be over time. Also 2nd tier KPD are not as good or need more time to develop like Murphy, Green etc.

So based on all this, maybe O'Sullivan is our best choice at #6, and take our chances to pickup a mid as above or utility like Leake at #11 depending on who still there.

This is an unusually thin draft for midfielders, but next years first round is looking like there will be plenty of them.

Ultimately we will presumably just take who we consider ‘best available’, but I’m hopeful that is going to be Curtin or O’Sullivan.

You make a good point about our midfield depth. Add to that Brayshaw is possibly one bad knock away from an early retirement, and we might play Trac more and more forward.

I was initially against picking Sanders but if he's best available, then it makes sense.
