Didn't see anything on Thursday night that said pick me for Rd 1. Will get a lot better idea in the JLT.

Impey was the most overrated port player of the last decade. Barry and Neade are both better footballers

It's a weird one. Well, notsomuch. Had a positional switch in his draft year which resulted in considerable improvement and emphasised the eye-catching, linebreaking speed.

On balance, was probably taken a round or two too early.

Interesting that his fellow second round speedster (and combine beep test record holder), Billy Hartung, was delisted outright by the Hawks last year. It was a good TAC Cup to outshine plodders.

Just had a look to see who was taken after Impey in his draft. Matt Crouch, Zach Merrett, Rory Lobb, Ben Brown, Orazio Fantasia. Hooley dooley. Some serious quality on offer later in that draft.

Pointless looking at any draft in hindsight.

I agree in that people don't really consider the domino effect of picking the star over the flop, ie: if we take Hayes over Michael Stevens and Sloane over Banner as we pledged, we probably don't suffer the dross of 2011/2, which in-turn means we don't get Wingard and Wines.

But that's assuming they develop the same at Alberton (as badbeats mentioned), or don't leave for peanuts after one or two contracts, etc.

Then there's the absolute fancy of things like "we could've got Fyfe, but we took Butcher LOL". We were never not taking the #1 KPF prospect in the draft with Tredrea about to ride into the sunset, and Fyfe looked like Josh Bootsma with a dodgy setshot, hence his second round status.

If anything, it's a good insight into how [in]effective your scouting networks, list management, talent identification/development and boneheaded/genial your coach is.

Also the couldabeens only focus on the misses, but not the hits. No one ever posts “Hey imagine how shit we’d be if we took Thorp instead of Boak!”

How galling is it that Hawthorn were able to blow the Thorp and Ellis and Dowler picks and still cruise to their dynasty #morepicks

How many clubs would be bringing up "Gray was available at #55 farken"??

Swings and roundabouts for sure, but with so many variables, years down the track you just can't pick apart the draft as it suits.

Twink-factor is an advanced metric we should all get behind

I should mention that I didn't bring that up to have a go at our recruiters, I was more just amazed at the number of A graders taken after the first round in that draft.

Yeah we drafted Impey because we needed speed, desperately. A certain Motlop (what even happened to that guy) had just carved us up in a semi. Fantasia is probably the only other one we may have looked at and on the whole he isn’t that much better than Impey

It’s hard to compare since we tried Impey in different positions, but Fantasia has proven himself to be a much better forward.
