Pick no. 9 On the Table

HAWTHORN set the scene yesterday for an aggressive post-season player raid by putting its first draft selection on the table. The Hawks have identified several high-profile players and are prepared to use their No. 9 draft pick.

It had better be a marquee player if our top pick is involved. Of the players we've been linked with, Sandilands is worth it. I don't know about anyone else.

Thoughts?

Certainly the Hawks are in a position where they could look to trade for some top-up players. You've got a young list, but would benefit by plugging a couple of specific holes with established players.

That said, I'm pretty skeptical of articles like this.

A similar piece appeared a few weeks ago talking about West Coast being willing to trade their first pick. It quoted Woosha saying, essentially, "for the right player, a gun like Judd, Riewoldt etc, it would be worth trading that pick".

That goes without saying, doesn't it?

But that gets massaged into "West Coast put their first pick on the table", which is a pretty blatant distortion.

And I sense that something similar may have happened with this piece on Hawthorn. I'd be interested to see what Pelchen has actually said about trading your first pick. I'd expect he hasn't said anything as controversial as the article's headline and opening paragraph project.

EDIT: Here we go: "We are open-minded on trading our first draft selection this year. We certainly haven't cancelled out the likelihood of it being traded," Pelchen said. "We are very much open for discussion and will talk about it depending on who the player is."

No shit. Most clubs would say the same thing at this stage of the year. It's a long way away from that first-rounder actually finding its way to another club.

The real surprise would be if Pelchen came out and said your first pick definitely won't be traded.

Oh dear, Tarrant is going to go to Hawthorn for pick 9 after Brian Lake quickly re-signs with the Dog's after the season ends for them :D

It looks like we are going to be extremely active in Trade Week.

I have no problem with putting our first pick on the table if it means we add a very good player to fill some very big holes we had this year.

I still have nightmares about Round 2 when I watched 193cm Mitch Thorp in his 2nd AFL game rucking against Darren Jolly and a buggered Brent Renouf at Full Back.

Pick 9 would be especially valuable to a rebuilding team this season. Any of the teams below us would probably jump at the chance to use 2 picks inside the top ten. It's going to be a while till anyone gets that chance again so interest will be high.

As for the likes of Brian Lake? He would be close to top of our list but the bulldogs would only let him go if they cannot reach an agreement with him. If that were the case then I'd say we would be home and hosed with Pick 9. Fingers crossed.

The reality is that our list is young enough to justify some gutsy decisions this offseason. Lets be honest, we cannot count on Trent Croad coming back to anywhere near best form if at all. Schoenmakers is a huge talent IMO but not close to ready to be the Number One backman and Gilham is an ideal third tall.

Either we swallow hard and commit to Roughead in defense or we throw the kitchen sink at a pure quality key defender. Because right now we are stuffed in that area.

No shit. Every club in the comp would say the same thing at this stage of the year. It's a long way away from that first-rounder actually finding its way to another club.

I thought similarly to be honest. Media trying to manifest something that isn't likely there. However, I thought it was interesting seeing as we've been linked with every Dick, Tom and Harry in the comp over the last couple of weeks.

That's because Pelchin has been doing his homework and having discussions with every player manager, just as he should be doing this time of year.

With Freo's trading History, Tarrant will probably win the Brownlow and a Norm Smith and whoever you get with pick 9 will be traded back to Hawthorn for in a year for someone like Morton, (Who will go on to be a fair player but that's about it)

:D

After some of the crap we have been privelledged to read in the media over the last week, it is exteremly difficult to believe that articles are anything but fabricated, distorted, misquouted pieces of dribble.

If we can get someone the ilk of a Sandilands/ Lake/ Deledio/ Cox (would we need to add a player or maybe a late pick?) I would trade straight up for 9. Anything less for our top pick in this draft and I'd be very dissapointed. If we drop down to a '2nd teir' trade such as a Tarrant/ Drum/ one of the Dee's/ Don's good young KPD the most I'd give is our 2nd rounder.....

I think it's a good move.

Puts the ball in the opposition clubs' court to come to us with a deal if they want pick 9.

My biggest concern is it will provide more fuel to those that think that Lids and Lake are likely targets. I keep telling you, it won't happen!

I think it's a fair move by the club. We desperately need experience and more big bodies, not another 17 year old who may become a quality player years down the track, because our list is already brimming with those types.

In fact I would go so far as to say that it is essential that we trade for either a quality defender or ruckman (or both) if we hope to make the top 4 next year.

Just look at the age/games difference between our list and that of St.Kilda, Geelong or Bulldogs and it tells a huge story.

Mark Seaby is on the move.

He's no world-beater, but there aren't that many ready-made ruckmen available. West Coast would be pretty chuffed with Seaby + pick 39 for your second-rounder.

I wouldn't blame you for baulking at that, because Seaby is a bit of a spud. But you generally pay a premium on ready-made ruckmen. Collingwood gave up pick 14 for Cameron Wood.

Here we go again. It is the silly season.

If we learnt anything from the previous administration - trading your first round pick for a short term solution does not equate to success and it robs the club of unearthing a 10 year quality player (see Spider etc).

It would appear from the posts on this board, that our major deficiencies in the list would appear to be the lack of quality fit ruckmen, KPD, outside quick mids and a couple of senior experienced players. We know its a shallow draft and won't run deep. I can not see more than 3-4 delistings (Dew, Boyle with 1-2 others to follow). I expect Moss to be elevated, leaving us with a minimum of 2 picks at the draft table.

I expect that most clubs will play hardball with us in any trades and the likelihood of getting a Cox, Sandilands, Lake etc will be remote. The downside in getting a quality trade will require trading our first and third picks or a good quality player, which will not be worth it and may upset team harmony. A good pick 9 selection could give us a quality player e.g Rioli at 12, Shoie at 16 and Birchell at 14

Pick 9 should be used for a quality outside quick midfielder who develop reasonably quickly and help out Bateman in breaking the lines.

Pick 25 could be used in a trade to gain the experienced player eg Hall or Tarrant who won't have great trade value but will provide us with a short term solution of a KPD, while our young talls develop. Imagine the flexibility of a forward line of Hall, Franklin, Dowler & Rioli with Roughie being released down back or a backline containing Shoie, Tarrant & Gilham.

Pick 41 has to be used on an experienced body KPD - Coad or Markovic.

That leaves us short a quality ruckman. The reality is that we won a premiership with the ruck trio of Campbell/Renouf/Taylor. Unfortunately Campbell has had to play a defensive role for the most of the season. The recruitment of KPD's will mean Campbell is released to concentrate on the ruck only. Renouf and Taylor will be cutely award if they do not perform it is their last year.

While the trading period brings an air of expectation - it often disappoints.

I reckon we are jostling for position of a big name trade...this is the start of people calling out "****en Hawthorn, how did they get ______" and we'll go "Family Club, welcome to the fold son" :thumbsu:

What kind of a "big name"?

Well, if it happens, you'll get the player by giving up pick 9. No great mystery there.

Gunnar, me old sparring partner :thumbsu: :)

I am not sure, but we are in need of experience...and this will only occur if we go hard for an established player.....Dean Cox would go alright :p

Going after Barry Hall would be one of the stupidest moves this club has ever made for so many reasons.

The way it should work:

1. Our first pick for a top 10 AFL key defender (1. Scarlett.... 10. Chaplin)
if that can't happen, then...
2. Our second pick for a top 11-30 AFL key defender (Merrett, Warnock, McGuane etc.)
if that can't happen, then...
3. Our third pick for a depth defender (Drum, Thursfield, Roe, Thurstans etc.)

Obviously depending on the player we'd have to add extra picks and/or players, or ask for picks in return

How about Maguire for nothing? Surely he will get delisted, as will Roe you would think. Could be able to get a freebie from somewhere.

Pretty sure the rule is not based around delistings, but 3 compulsory picks in the national draft. So if Moss was to be elevated, we would have to delist a 4th player, in order to still use 3 picks in the draft.

As much as Moss has shown, the safest option is to keep Moss on the rookie list, to allow us to have an extra space on the list. Allows us to either give the fringe guys an extra year, or take an extra player.

If Croad and Bailey are kept on the list, they will be on the Long Term injury list, which will give Moss the right to play.

I am pretty sure the rule has been changed that elevating a player from the rookie list to the main list counts as one of the 3 compulsory picks!

I am unclear on whether Moss is entitled to be retained for a rookie for one more year!

Hey guys, I have browsed through a few KP Backman that could become available with the temptation of our number 9 pick! I know some may not be worth a first round pick, but surely we could make it happen with a bit of negotiating of players included. Have a browse and tell me your thoughts!

Troy Chaplin- Port
196cm, 100kg
23/12/1986

Alipate Carlise- Port
192cm, 98kg
30/4/1987

Jarrod Rivers- Melb
192cm,90kg
18/10/1984

Mat Warnock - Melb
192cm,95kg
3/4/1984

Marcus Drum - Freo
191cm,84kg
1/5/1987

Nathan Brown - Collingwood
195cm,97kg
17/12/1988

I know the likelihood of getting Brown is unlikely, but with the temptation of pick 9, who knows. Chaplin and Carlisle may be a little more realistic, especially after Ports year and both have played well on Roughy and Buddy in recent times. Rivers and Warnock could be realistic - especially with Frawley standing up and having Garland to come in from injury.

Who knows, but all are a bit younger than Tarrant and could become good players!

would hawthorn be interested in Hale from NM? Tep ten pick in the 'super draft' can play ruck or forward. Kicked 8 against Taylor/Scarlett last year. NM has an abbundance of talls at the moment... maybe hale and 2nd/3rd rounder for pick 9? Actually think he is a perfect fit for geelong, but thats for another page...

yes, yes. NM should probably know better then to deal again with the hawks (bloody jon hay) but Hale is wasted at the Roos, with MacIntosh, Petrie and now Goldstein all in front of him now... Would love two picks in top ten....
