Pick no. 9 On the Table

We can nearly put Chris Tarrant out of the picture - (http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/84071/default.aspx)

However, we could snatch his brother, Robbie Tarrant (North Melbourne), who stands at 196cm and only 20 years old. Has had some issues with his shoulders, but I doubt North would give him up, as they really lack key defenders.

What are your thoughts on getting Adam Hartlett (23) from Carlton, and turning him into a Key Defender? Nathan Brown wouldn't be a bad pick up either, only 21 years old.

Other players we could look at include Carlile, Chaplin, Thursfield, M Brown or T Williams - all players who are not very old or too expensive.

Why do people always want to trade Mark Williams? He really stood up in BIG finals last year, and is one of the toughest matchups in the league.

We should trade either draft picks or players excess to needs, Willo in my opinion is not excess to needs.

On topic agree with a lot of what is said above, we cannot win the flag next year without a competitive big backman - be that Croad or other, however I don't think Gilham or Schoenmakers will be able to do it next year. I like the two Port boys (if available) but I think Lake would cost us too much. Nathan or Mitch Brown would both be good as well.

Having said all that we don't need the All Australian centre half back, we just need someone who can play on a big opponent and hold their own. Preferably we have been watching someone in a state league somewhere (ie Coad) who is ready made but slipped through the net.

Urgh.. so many average, average names are being thrown into the circle.

Tbh, our defence problems are potentially long-lasting, but atm are temporary. I think that means someone like Tarrant is a good option.

If there was a chance of keeping pick 9 & selecting Talia (backman) in this draft and perhaps trading second/third round + players for a Tarrant, I would like to see everything happen for that to occur.

Yes I agree. Getting Talia would be a fantastic pick up:thumbsu:

What about Mith Brown from WC? He's a good size (194cm, 94kg), has played 25 games and is versatile, we would be able to swap him forward with Rough if match ups werent going our way.
Would our 3rd pick be enough to get the Eagles to bite?
Zero chance.

We wouldn't even use your 3rd pick.

100% behind this strategy. :thumbsu:

Mojo's thoughts on the short and mid-term defensive issues are pretty accurate. Tarrant would offer a good swap over phase.

Of course we have to try to trade pick 9.

Hawks don't win another premiership until either:

- T. Croad is back fit and firing (not 2010, doubtful at all)
- R. Shoenmakers is big and experienced enough to be no. 1 KP defender (at least 2011, prob 2012 - do we want to wait that long?)
- We trade for a genuine KP defender

If we want a premiership in 2010 or 2011 we need to trade pick 9 (and whatever else it takes) for one of:

Lake (unlikely)
Bock (unlikely)
Tarrant (my pick because unlike the others it may work)

Alternatively we need to make a play for say N. Brown or McGuire with a 2nd round pick or a middle range player.

If the Hawks don't throw everything at a KP defender, I will be very disappointed.

Another top post. :thumbsu:

Of course I always enjoy the stuff that supports my view ;)

Why not get Chaplin with pick 9? 23yro, 100kg, 196cm CHB who has played in a GF (if you call that a grand final..)?? seems to fit the bill for what we need.. Admittedly i haven't seen a lot of his games, is he no good? :p

Or we could keep pick 9 and get Talia who won't have an impact for 3 years.
