Then I see no point- how are we going to magically be better than Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong in the next 2 seasons. We need to wait till these teams decline a little. That is our window!

Last year West Coast and Adelaide were significantly better than us. A lot can change in 12 months.

That said we should not be considering Didak. He is an old 30 with nothing left to offer. Might as well get our VFL team to offer him a contract because he is no longer AFL standard.

Didak would have 1 season left.. possibly two at an absolute maximum/pinch.. but 1 solid year left I think.

I think we have a shot at top 4 next year.. I would think the club needs to aim for our 'window' to be wide open for the next two years.. after that you are competing with GC and GWS.. which WILL be scary..

Yeah I see your point, if it was a one year experiment then MAYBE okay, we have to find players somewhere. I personally don't see him cementing a spot in best 22. And I'm cautious about the prospect of taking on veterans as they only compound our lack of draft picks in regards to having youth circulating through the club.

I thought Collingwood handled free agency very well.

They traded out Dawes and Wellingham for very decent picks.

And then picked up a couple of very similar players in Lynch and Young.

Sure their best 22 was fractionally weaker, but they got full value for two players and mitigated their loss by recruiting via free agency.

We could adopt this model somewhat to cover the next two years penalties.

Not sure if it's been discussed recently on here, but with Hille retired, and the loss of Jenkins, we seem to be in need of at least one other squad ruckman.

What are the prospects out there (apart from Ben Hudson;) )?

Apparently we're after one of the West Coast ruckmen, whose name escapes me.
What about Dustin Martin?

I know we will struggle to have the currency to get him, and he is apparantely a loose end, but I reckon he would make our team a lot better.

Would say yes in a heartbeat.

Shag it then, let's get Jack Watts and see how he goes in a decent team

Not sure how we're trading for him given we don't have any picks worth trading.

The club would be stupid not to give serious thought to getting him! Would instantly slot into the side off a half-forward flank, and give us a tonne of x-factor both up forward and in the guts!

What are Richmond after? Obviously would take a lot to get Dusty.
Are they after picks or players or a combo?
Would they look at Bellcho? Maric can't leave the ground. Is Vickery a ruck or a forward?
I can't see us having anything they really need, and I would doubt they would want to strengthen their most comparable rival.

Yeah I know, but if he genuinely decides he wants out and nominates us as his preferred destination then that should give us the upper hand at the negotiating table

If he's "gettable" then I imagine we'd be looking at it. I'd love him in the team but leaving aside the issue of whether it feasible, the question is at what cost?

I've been advocating Sylvia and he and Martin are pretty similar players....but Dusty is better by some margin. Draft picks wont be part of the deal, so would have to involve someone like TBC + something else....assuming they are interested in TBC (which they might well be - Maric is only 27 but he's an old 27 - warhorse). And the "something else" would need to be quality as well - I'd imagine Hooker, Crameri, Myers level - so it'd need a big outlay by us to get him and then you get the age-old question of tearing at the fabric of the club to get one player ( and our fabric is probably already a little frayed after the year we've had).

To be clear, I'm not advocating the above scenario, just commenting that I think that's what would be required by Richmond to get it done if a deal was on the table.

Plus deals for players of this quality usually get done one way or another by the incumbent club.

All the talk of Dusty but how the hell can we afford him under the salary cap? He will surely be demanding a price we can not pay.
You'd have to make room, same way we had to make room for Goddard....trade out a TBC (who'd be looking for a decent payrise) plus other mid-level salary, Hille and Nat Rat retire and maybe we trade a Jetta for pick 758 in the draft...I'm sure it can be done if the will to do so is there.

Again, I am not advocating that we do this.

It would take a deal like Bellcho for Martin to have any chance of happening, I'm sure the Tiger supporters love Dusty but a lot would also realize Big Ivan is their weak link in a premiership tilt.
