I wouldn't worry about Jake. A player must nominate for the draft. We could ask him to play for our VFL team in 2015, as the reality is that first year players have limited impact. And you don't have to drfat a F/S at 18 - Read Steve Morris.

morris wasn't taken under FS though, but I agree with the sentiment.
I think that's the reason we gunned for the pick though, to take him, even if it wasn't through the official fs route, even if we have to pay overs

I don't think this could be further from the truth. He's brought in experienced heads to fill the void which was crippling the development of guys like Trengove and would have been a massive problem for Toumpas and Viney next year.

With Cross and Vince in there with Jones, maybe Michie and a motivated Tapscott, Matt Jones and maybe Magner they've got some bodies to go in there and win the ball and take the heat off the youngsters giving them time to find their feet. Clearly the class is going to come from the young brigade and it will take a while but Trengove, Viney, Toumpas, Tyson and Watts is a pretty darn good start.

Still a long way to go but things already looking much better. Reckon things will turn quickly from here.

The indictment against Neeld is that he brought in some experienced bodies, but not one was a midfielder, which is Melbourne's greatest need.

But if you didn't have the exceptional circumstance of GWS entering the competition, then Richmond would have selected Morris under F/S.

I would just take 26 and 42 for Crameri. Even if we have to use 42 instead of 48 for a trade.

Maybe giving GWS 42 instead of 48 could prompt them to chuck something else in like a late selection they won't use anyway, or perhaps access to a zone selection?

It's a strange one, because there is no guarantee that GWS will use the selection. there must be a reason.

Umm not to rein on your parade, but wasn't Morris pre-listed by GWS and then traded to Richmond?

You mean like if there's another mini-draft we get 1st pick or something?

How do Collingwood trade a mid first rounder + a late second rounder and a late third rounder and get a rising KPF/Ruck + an early mid first round pick?

Seriously wish Dodoro or Keane could get deals like this done

Lol I don't think Dodoro has the imagination to do that. That's the one thing I've admired about Collingwood the last few years, they've been very astute at the trade table.

Helps when you get a bonus top 10 pick for a guy originally taken in a draft where you received 2 x top 5 picks only 2 years after being in back-to-back GFs.

I wonder if Infractions will call that one the gift that keeps on giving?

Dodo stunk as a talent scout.. and stinks as head of trading.. but we have what we have..

Till the club gets rid of him we are stuck with it..

Not that we were going to do a lot of deals.. club very focussed on developing our own and keeping a tight knit group that comes through together...

but when you look at the deals being done.. you just wonder whether we couldn't have been a little more creative and maybe walked out of trade period a little taller... Seems like Melbourne were willing to pay for any midfielder that needs to shave..

What we need is someone like Geelong's recruiting manager (not sure what his name is), he seems to have a good eye for trading, etc. Dodoro's biggest failing in my view is he doesn't seem to understand that to get you need to give, and has an annoying knack of drafting defenders and hoping the coaching staff can turn them into mids or forwards (yes that's worked with Heppell but he was always going to be a gun).

You are missing the point. A club can choose a F/S at any age. GWS was an exceptional circumstance. We don't have expansion clubs entering the AFL every year.

Ahh I get ya, is there anyone they might pre-list? I'm not entirely sure they're still able to do it

I see no reason why they won't, free Willy (Rioli) wold be handy

Good point, you're right of course. If I were Essendon I would be be asking Long if he'd mind plying his trade in the VFL for a year until we don't have draft penalties hanging over our heads.

So whats happening with Long next year?

We are getting a first round pick all of a sudden? I thought we could take him with our first live draft pick whether that's 60 or whenenever if someone nominates before us. Isnt that the case?

Also pick 26 plus a rise in the draft order from 48 to 42 would hardly be a big gain for us but seems about what dodoro gets so wont surprise.

Thankfully we got Keane and things improved out of sight. Before him under Dodo most picks were misses now most are hits. Whether there is more to it such as general lack of recruiting resources under the Dodo era I am not sure. Even higher picks that didn't work out under Merv have been due to injury (D.Daniher, Long). We must keep Keane at all costs. At this stage if we get a second rounder for Crameri I would be happy. The brief footage I have seen of Jed Lamb he would jump the queue on most of our existing small forward options, has a radar in front of goal would have liked to have seen us explore such an option. Really hoping for a very quick forward who can kick goals from half chances and cause general havoc in front of the sticks.
