WHY DO WE WANT TO BE TRADING FOR OLDER BLOKES?

It isn't draft tampering if Long is ready to nominate for the draft. The AFL can't force a bloke to play football. And then when Long nominates in 2015 the rules apply equally to him and everyone else.

James Hird is allowed to talk to Michael Long. Have him around for a couple of brews and suggest this to him. Hird can have no official involvement in the club, so this way the club has not officially said anything to Long. It was a couple of ex double premiership team mates having a catchup and asking about each others family.

Michael then has a chat to his lad who decides against nominating and develops in the VFL for 12 months.

Betts maybe, can't see us going for the other two but we might. We wouldn't get Yarran for Gumby, he is still very highly rated by Carlton. We don't have the chips to trade for a speedy mid/fwd- they don't come cheap! You are talking early to mid first round for Taylor Adams. Unless we trade TBC we don't have the currency.

Betts is apparently being offered a 4 year, $2m contract by the Crows. I don't want to be matching that.

I would, he is exactly what we are missing, although I have NFI why Adelaide of all clubs would want Betts- they have a lot of small forwards as it is!

We're already paying 500+ to BJ, Hurley, Ryder and Jobe, cap space is not something we're hugely blessed with.

So you would pay $500k per season for this guy?

Adelaide will likely be delisting Callinan, they are thnking Petrenko is played out of position as a forward and the Porplyzia is not the ideal small forward (i.e. not quick enough to apply constant pressure).

I think $500K a season is a lot to pay a player who is pigeon-holed to the F50 with no real ability to run through the middle.

Umm, the Adelaide list has Callinan, Petenko, Poplyzia as SF's, two of whom won't be at Adelaide next yea

I hope we won't pay ridiculous money for someone like Betts. Last thing we'd need is to mismanage the cap and end up with a situation circa 2001-2002 where we are forced to trade out the heart of the playing group (Dimma) in order to stay under the cap

If the afl allow players to walk it will be another massive penalty.It won't happen because there will be no limit on how many could walk and it will take the club several years to recover.Just look at gws with all the draft concessions theyre still not competitive

Besides, if u were a player why would you want to leave a club that is (a) in the premiership window, (b) has the best facilities in the afl.

Matt Finness is a spineless little campaigner who ought to crawl back into what every ditch they brought him out of to be a puppet. He has done nothing to help protect the players in any of this.

I'm not so sure that they players can break their contracts anyway. Based on my limited understanding of employment law any breaches of duty, which are not made out by the way, would be a repudiation by the club. It is then on the player to accept the repudiation. Playing your heart out for a year is not the best way to show that you've accepted that the club does not consider that it is required to perform its obligations under the contract and that the contract is terminated/at and end/set aside.

No players would publicly talk about wanting to leave especially if they are contracted but my best bet is a contracted fringe player would like the option to leave and has requested the players assoiation to make the request. If a player has asked for the option they still may decide to stay and are just asking for clarification.

If Essendon has not reached its duty of care (imo likely if Essendon cannot tell players what medications they were given then they have already failed to reach a satisfactory level of care) then i could understand players being able to walk out on their contract. I however dont think free agency is a realistic option and would expect Essendon to be able to trade the player or players in question or risk the player them walking into the draft.
