No love for BT at 9?
Not much. Didn't Brad Hardie also wear that number or have I got it wrong.

Anyway, give it to Dan and he can make it his own.

I did love Banks though, crazy and not scared, seemed to love playing Carlton.:)

Was Hardie 9 or 5?

edit: Just checked, 9

It's funny when I look at player numbers, my immediate thought goes to previous players that have worn them.

No. 9 a blank can't think of anyone
No.12 will always be Banksy
No.36 Swan, of course.
Yeah 9 apart from BT doesn’t h ring a bell

12 Twiggy Dunne and banksy
36 Rene kink and Swanny

Harsh on Johnny Fn Noble that he's out the door less than 24 hours and nobody can remember that he wore #9.
Nobody will forget. It'll printed on the locker forever. Given he played over 100 games

Colin Tully was a good number 9 and Ron Kingston too (bit before all your times I know) Ronny was a tough CHB and was so unlucky to miss the '58 GF triumph.

BT was good till his knees gave out and Johnny Noble gave everything in that number 9.

I don't regard Carman at all but I do seem to remember that Rotten Ronnie Andrews wore 9 in his only year at the Pies!

I don't remember what I had for breakfast 2 hours ago.

Perhaps people don't remember #9 as much because a Pies player hasn't worn it in a winning GF since 1953. It's one of only 2 numbers lower than 36 to have only been in one of our flags going back to 1953, the other being #11.

Every number less than 40 has been part of at least one of those flags, with only #17 and #22 being in all 5.

Of course in 1958 the VFL made the players change numbers for the GF because on of the papers printed the usual list which was supposed to be the sole domain of the Football Record. Imagine that today and seeing Pendles running around in #28 in the 2023 GF!

Important info for whoever gets offered 9. Not sure when this changed but back in the early days, numbers were handed out in alphabetical order - which saw numbers change for players each year. Or it might have even been each game?

Bobby being in 23 in 2022 was so funny to me as I associated it with Rocca and seemed like a number for a big, tall player but now he has really made it his own
Also the flip for McStay, taking the number of Blair & to a lesser extent O'Bree (both smaller)

Yes, it was done alphabetically for each season and it carried on all the way through our golden era. Gordon Coventry for example wore 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 in different seasons.

If anyone's too worried about #9 not being in flags we did have a player wearing it in 6 of the 8 flags prior to 1953 (1917, 28, 29, 30, 35 & 36), including both Syd and Gordon Coventry. Numbers weren't worn in our first 3 flags.

Membrey wore #28 at St Kilda so you have to figure he'll just walk into that.

I'm doubtful that Perryman will be particular about wearing #36, so I think he and Houston will wear #9 and #12.

#12 is a bit of a luckless number, so maybe Dan Houston can render the need for luck irrelevant.
