Player 'Mix up' (Mayne recruitment) and Collingwood's playling list management issues

Watch the pies get first dibs at a homesick Freo player in the next couple years. Ditto us if a player wants out of punt rd.
Clubs are manipulating free agency compensation by offering players far more money than they're worth (mayne, vickery et al) and it ain't so the opposing club can't match. The whole fa implementation has been a debacle

I think I know the club you're talking about. It's the one who has just re-signed the best player in the land for 2 million less than other offers, the club who also just recorded a record membership - for the 7th year in a row. The club that finished 3rd in the H&A season just half a game off top. The club with the All Australian Captain, Full Back and Centreman. The club that bought the most fans through the turnstiles this season. The club that will have 2, not 1, but 2 players crowned Brownlow medalists this year.

Is this the club you're reminded of? Collingwood and 'this club' shouldn't even be spoken of in the same sentence. One is a professionally ran sporting club who is performing admirably on and off the field. The other is Collingwood.

Looking at your profile piccie. Is that glass half full?

I sort of know what you are getting at but I doubt Freo or any club would consciencely send a player to a club that doesn't have the players welfare at heart.

Bucks comments woudln't have gone unnoticed by other players around the league.

Mayne is getting the respect his deserves. It's funny how BigFooty can turn someone who's clearly getting overpaid for his performance into a victim.
Mate, your dumb coach turned him into a victim unnecessarily by his public comments! It took the microscope away from his average performance.

There are a lot of trades that don't work, contracts that don't turn out, but you simply pick your time and place to go through the motions and give an appropriate performance review. Going public like Buckley has the following negative impact;

Makes an excuse
Shows Buckley isn't aware of what's going on
Publicly Shames a player
May demotivate that player
Sends a negative message to prospective players or current listed players

It was an unprofessional and poor thing to do mate. End of story. Stop trying to buy your way out of it with the 'harden the **** up' attitude. Collingwood of all clubs should be mindful of how actions impact mental health.

Any middle of road players which all clubs need will think twice about going to the pies now, good clubs respect their players and dont throw them under the bus through the media.

I also like how people have been ripping the Pies all season for recruiting Mayne, yet when Buckley admits that it might not have been the greatest move, and that they were expecting more out of the player this year (a fair, honest, and reasonable call, regardless of Mayne's salary) suddenly Buckley is "classless" and "a terrible man manager" with "no people skills" once again

No I don't think that's it at all, or at least not much. It's more Buckley choosing to air it in a public forum that has people scratching their heads.
No one is really disagreeing with Bucks assessment as such.

The "airing in a public forum" part is pretty commonplace in overseas sports. It's just another way to send a message, to the player, supporters, league, etc.

We do a lot here to coddle and not put offside players in the AFL (eg. asking them to be traded, trading them to a destination of their choice), especially for fairly insignificant, middle-tier performers (eg. Middle tier players like Maybe), far more than is done in other places and countries. AFL players don't really cop that much harsh public scrutiny or criticism compared to their overseas counterparts (and no, BigFooty doesn't count, as it's not the mainstream public media).

I don't really see anything wrong with what Buckley said/did, and I in fact welcome more of it in the game.

Meh, this isn't one of those other sports that are overseas though. So it's hardly a normal thing to do here.
Whether we should see more of it or not, I can't say I agree, whether it will happen more in this sport as time goes on? Quite possibly. I hope not though.

interesting post- are you suggesting that these over inflated contracts are intended to "create a pathway" for others? that they establish a club as having a reputation for paying well? that they are putting out feelers for bigger fish.... maybe

Your coach must be pretty average too then losing to Bucks with half his squad out.

I don't rate Bucks as a coach but this is a differen issue altogether. Bucks was asked questions about Mayne and answered them.

You think him being told something he already knows will cause depression? I'm not usually the toughen the **** up but in this case Buckley said nothing unwarranted towards Mayne. What Buckley said isn't going change anything about Mayne's situation.

Buckley is showing a distinct lack of accountability......this is just a disgraceful episode. Is it any wonder Colloingwood are where they are on field at the moment, Buckley most likely has not made one mistake in his own eyes. Destined for another two years of finger pointing I expect.

"Side by side we stand together" should have an asterisk and some terms and conditions listed below it.

And there it is 'You go for Melbourne so I'll pay out on the team you go for because it's an easy get'

When you live in a glass house don't throw stones. Anyways you completely missed the point or you're just ignoring the point because you don't have any good arguments.

So you think it would be healthy for Mayne or other Pie players to come on to the media and say that Buckley can't coach and has been kept because of their President's ego.

Well now that it's been made public what Buckley thinks of him and the situation I'd say it's exasperated because it's become public knowledge just how Buckley really thinks of the situation.

Humiliating for the young man.

I know it's not common here, but IMO it should be, when relevant/necessary.

In footy, and at times as a culture in Australia, we're too "matey", and too afraid to step on toes and piss people off. Even when we do knock or criticise someone, we do it in a gutless behind a their-back manner, or through social media, or (like BigFooty) on anonymous internet forums. I'm not saying people should chase or create drama, but I'd be happy to see a bit more brutal upfront honesty, cutthroat ruthlessness, and plain calling it like it is face-to-face and in public.

It's not ideal but what's out there isn't something most people can't already guess at. He's played VFL the entire year most can get an idea of what the coach thinks from that what Buckley said doesn't change anything. Unfortunately with being an AFL player there is a public pressure to perform. If he didn't want to accept the pressure he shouldn't have accepted the contract.

Then you would be ok with Mayne saying Buckley can't coach and the culture is tonic.
