Really it was all over BF and from his HS interview i think it had some legs.

I don't think he will go anywhere now, ES is out fishing.
Did not notice it in his HS Article. Can you post where he Hints at it please

That was an interview from this year.

I think they mean that he was nearly traded to Melbourne in previous trade weeks.

It was a major rumor doing the boards he was disillusioned about not getting a fair go at AFL level late last season despite showing good form.

Melbourne had been scouting him and were keen.

Then in that article just some of his statements like :

Asked about the frustrations of being part of Mick Malthouse's revolving-door policy, and his relationship with the coach, Dawes conceded it would have been easy to turn grumpy with the boss.

"Because he's the one the decision ultimately rests with, it would be easy for me to be resentful towards him, because it's him saying, 'You're not quite up to it this week'," Dawes said.

Shows he was obviously frustrated at times last seasons, fair enough many players go through it.

"But now that I'm in a position where I'm enjoying my footy and I'm as comfortable as I can be with my spot in the team, I can look back and think he's managed me pretty well.

"He's given me tastes of senior footy - not at the expense of the side, I've deserved my spot, I think -- but he's also taken me out and let me find my form in the VFL.

"Last year, I was down the pecking order and I've probably come up a bit this year."

He obviously is in a good place right now and looking back on it can see the reasons the club handled him the way they did, but that is not to say the rumors he was frustrated with his non selection last year was false.

Think about it last year he was behind Anthony, Cloke, Fraser, L.Brown and struggling for a gig despite getting in the VFL bests regularly.
He then has Melbourne in his ear telling him they would give him a guaranteed game and that his opportunities would be limited at Collingwood next year due to his pecking order.

Not out of the question the rumor had legs.

But as with all these things we will never know and as long as he is a pie he has my support.

Will have to watch out for these names at the end of next year. Pendlebury, Thomas, N.Brown and Swan are probably the dangermen. So need to resign asap. GWS will target all these..

5. Nick Maxwell (c) (2011)
8. Harry O'Brien (2011)
10. Scott Pendlebury (2011)
13. Dale Thomas (2011)
16. Nathan Brown (2011)
36. Dane Swan (2011)

I think all decisions from now on needs to consider these ^^

Does this mean we don't sign Tarrant?

Don't know. But might mean we will look to cut some players for 2012 to accomodate all these likely large contracts.

I recon the 3 we need to sign up first are N. brown, Pendles and Daisy

i dont think either harry or maxy would leave

The signing of Brown i can see depending on next season, if he's a permanent fixture in the side ect.

If Swan was to leave (and he's one of my faves and i'd hate to lose him) then as basically a 28 yr old he may be the most expendable from that little list there

I certainly wouldnt want to lose either pendles or thomas because that would be a huge loss immediately and for our future

Whilst we'd feel the loss of swan, i do feel that his position would be more easily covered than the loss of the others

Can Tarrant go on the veterans list straight away?

I agree with this. Daisy + Pendles are priorities. N.Brown same.

Can't see Harry O or Maxy going either.

My view is get Swan last (very durable, but still the older of these). Probably if lost him would get maximal compensation which might not get with Daisy/ Pendles.

But obviously want to retain them all.

Just all these top up players with Krak + now Tarrant. Hard to see them all fitting into the cap, and with Sheedy in charge of GWS, you know he will target all these + offer big money.

Almost hope that Presti + Tarrant + B.Johnson + Davis all retire next year to make some room. Because I do expect it will be a challenge to retain all these.

If we get Tarrant. Vet from 2012. Which is ok, but still I expect if we did get him he would take up a considerable % of our cap. Which possibly isn't ideal.

So if we do miss out on Tarrant it might be a blessing in disguise and might just mean we can get a cheap 1st year draftee instead.

I think Maxy and Harry will be certain to stay on, on top of that I am not sure they are the sort of players GWS will target anyway. The two types of players that they will target are 1) Guys they think will be interested in coming to them. If you take the GC as a blueprint most of the guys who went where pretty keen to go there. Rischa and Brown due to being disappointed in their treatment by their own club, Gaz allegedally made first contact with GC too, Harbrow home etc etc.

The 2nd type will be guys that will be a massive marquet player who is gonna draw a lot of media attention and public interest.

Harry and Maxy are safe on both fronts. They aren't going to want to leave and the GWS are almost certain to have similar type players who want to go there and therefore, even though they are still going to pay overs they will still manage to get a similar player cheaper then they would for having to outright buy someone with no interest.

N Brown will be the same if he is played all next year, however if he is on the fringe he may be in a similar boat to Rishca and C Brown. Cashing the dollars after losing faith in the loyalty of his own club.

Pendles, Swan and Thomas are the type of guys that GWS will through massive cash at and you just have to hope that they stick. It's hard to make assumptions when your talking about the amount of cash that GC threw at Gaz and he would have more links to Geelong then most do to their clubs. That said he always seemed to be the kind of guy who would enjoy the higher degree of privacy that being a footballer in a non AFL state will provide.

I think GWS wish list will probably have Buddy at number 1 I hope for our sake he bites.

Johnson and Davis go onto the veterans list at the end of next year, although apparently we are giving up 1 of their spots to pay Tarrant as if he was the greatest player of all time

I find the whole Cloke situation very interesting.

I wouldn't mind Cloke signing a 1 year contract, after which point he can decide whether he wants to go to GWS or stay.

If signed away on a big contract no guarantee we can retain Swan, Pendlebury and Thomas which is very concerning. For mine all those are far more important, and if Cloke signs with GWS it might be the lesser of two evils and might mean all the others can fit a little more comfortably into the cap.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us lose someone to GWS. And it won't be pretty.

I ment challenge to retain Thomas, Pendlebury, Swan + others.

Which is why we likely will need to shed several contracts with GWS who will be very keen on our stars.

Kevin Sheedy would like nothing more than to steal one of Collingwood's best.

But Davis and Johnson being on the veterans list wont be taking up much room at all, they wont be the problem when retaining the big stars

I don't think either will be on the list at the end of 2011. We have young players who can cover them, and although they would be on the veterans list, we would still be saving about 400k if they were not on the list. Add Presti's dough and half of Tarrant's cash and it is a significant saving of 800-850k+.

On top of that, add what we save on Ball's front ended contract- we could be ok come the GWS fight for Thomas, Pendles, Swan, Cloke etc.

My concern is if there were any payment reshuffles to get Ball here in 2010 (I think Pendles was asked).

Yeah, it'll happen but it won't be the end of the world. AFAIK, they can still only take one uncontracted player from each club (without the permission of the club) but have a 2 year period to do so. From the combined implementation of the two new clubs, and as a top team, to lose only one quality player and get a compensation pick in return ain't too bad I reckon. :)
