Jason Cloke and Campbell Brown are good players, but have less of an upside than the other players IMO.

Rohan was quoting "the man". The man is outside of BF isnt he?

Graham Polak (Freo)
Shane Harvey (Essendon)
Jason Gram (Brisbane)
Rick Ladson (Hawthorn)
Callum Urch (Kangaroos)
Toby Thurstans (Port)
Brent Reilly (Adelaide)

I think its a good call on Urch. Besides Wells I think he is the rookie most likely to play seniors for North this year. All Australian, plays HBF which is probably the easiest place to start your footy and the Roos lack medium defenders. Already has enough size to play seniors and form all reports is in the middle of a growth spurt which suggest he is a bit of a late bloomer.

Hodge has probably the weakest non preferred side of your ten or if he hasn't, shows a complete unwillingness to use his right foot. I think it was against the Kangas in rd.22 where he was particularly exposed for that a few times.

He would have one of the best opposite foot kicks at the club. I would go as far to say he is easily the best opposite foot kick under 22ish.

On his debut at Box Hill, he was up against the boundary outside of 50, swung onto his right on the wrong side for a right foot kick, and slotted the goal, with the ball clearing the fence. I've seen him spear passes on his right and knocking the absolute stuffing out of the receiver. His right foot is nearly as good as his left, and his left is absolutely sublime.

As for Didak, I completely forgot him. I'd have him before Kelly, and after Burgoyne. Streets ahead of McGough for mine.

I'd agree with that list. I wish i could be so confident about Richard Cole. I havent seen him do enough to rate him as highly as everyone else.
Didak will be special. Great football brain. Did's is probably Collingwoods best young player in the last 5 years.

Dont worry about Richard Cole. He will be a creative halfback initially (twenty times better than Ben Johnson) and will eventually be able to play nearly everywhere on the ground. He will take time to mature, as his brain explosion last year can testify.

He is another Gavin Wanganeen.

I'm going to be a bit adventurous....players lacking in AFL experience (that can also fill a gap for their club in the 2003 season)

1. Luke Ball (St Kilda)
2. Jeremy Humm (West Coast)
3. Guy Richards (Collingwood)
4. Jobe Watson (Essendon)
5. Sam Power (Bulldogs)
6. Byron Schammer (Fremantle)
7. Trent Sporn (Carlton)
8. Daniel Wells (Kangaroos)
9. Barry Brooks (St Kilda)
10. Richard Cole (Collingwood)

I disagree with Richards. In my opinion, he should have been traded/delisted at the end of this year. Hasnt come on as much as first thought, i doubt he will play senior footy this year.

Trent Sporn will have a big 2003. I saw alot of him last year and was definately a stand out among the likes of Livingston and Wiggins. Sporn will be the best of those 3.

If that's the case he needs to show as much confidence in it as you do, something he hasn't yet shown.

I've seen him use his right many times in the seniors. I think it's unfair to single out one game. Especially one where we didn't even play the Roos in round 22. Thatg was West Coast. Maybe you're thinking of Judd.

This is my top ten

10: Byron Schammer (freo)

9: Adam Hunter (wce)

8: David Hale (kangaroos)

7: Barry Brooks (st kilda)

6: Xavier Clark (st kilda)

5: James Bartel (geelong)

4: Dion Woods (freo)

3: Luke Livingston (carlton)

2: Luke Hodge (hawthorn)

1: Travis Gaspar (wce)

Travis is regarded as the best of all three brothers so mark my words he will be a brilliant key position player i reckon this thread will ruffle some feathers

Steven Milne (saints) Clever goalsneak who managed to play 21 games and boot a more than creditable 50 goals in only his second AFL season. Despite playing in one of the most difficult positions in the competition, as a permanent small forward, this 22-year-old got better as the 2002 season progressed and kicked five match-winning goals as the Roos thumped West Coast at Colonial Stadium in round 10. With quality small forwards among the most difficult players to find, the Saints look to have a real find on their hands. ;) [/B]

Milne had a good year but IMO he has some things he must learn as yet.

Apparently when Saints played the Crows Milne's opponent was Andrew Crowell. Milne said to Crowell at the start of the match "who the f**k are you?".

That comment provided Crowell with great inspiration, and Crowell did his best to make sure that Milne knew just who he was by the end of the match. In probably Crowell's best match for the year he kept Milne down to just one goal.

BTW, 50 goals from a non-tall forward is not all that had to find. Burton got 50 this year, and Welsh had 23 by round 10 & would have had 50 easily if he had played more matches in the second half of this season (Welsh BTW got 47 goals in his first year for the Crows).

Now, if the Crows only had a true tall forward who could stand up & take some marks to go with Welsh, Burton (& maybe Burns) ... oh wait a minute, didn't they recruit some guy? Not a youngster I know, but you never know he might be good for the Crows this season though.

I wonder if an older player still qualifies as "one to watch" ?

Trent didn't get on the field much in 2002 so Livvo and Wiggins definitely had better seasons but I take your point. His skill level is infinitely superior to most around the club. Has the look of someone special. Hard to believe he debuted this year actually. I understand that he is one of the pacesetters in the fitness stakes too, is that right? After Prender of course, who is absolutely killing them on the track. Can you also let me know your thoughts on Oke. I knew he was too good to be lost to AFL football already but exactly why can't he get it together?

btw PP, where have you been hiding while Collo has been going through the place with a broom? ;) You've been quiet so I thought you might have moved on until I saw your name in Inside Carlton again.

Daniel Motlop deserves a mention on this thread..:p

Harding.. if he could get more accurate he would have easily kicked 50 goals in 02.. hope he has been workin on his accuracy..
as well as the defensive side of his game.

Shoot me, round 21 FFS  , Hodge (not Judd) 3 times minimum.

Heck you've watched him more than me, but in the times I've seen him he may not be unco on the right, but has clearly demonstrated that he is unwilling to use it as a first option.

Steven Milne has a long long way to go to make himself more than a one year wonder, have no doubt about that, he is something of a one trick pony that needs a few more strings to his bow. What he has demonstrated so far is probably the best snap shot for goal I've ever seen and an uncanny ability to pull goals from his arse, he makes me laugh anyway.

As for his mouth, it's nothing personal he does the same thing to his teammates at training, but you've got to admire a player who has been on the rookie list at 2 different clubs, you don't make it if you don't have confidence in your own ability.

50 goals from a small forward is indeed hard to find, I wouldn't qualify Welsh 188cm or Burton 184cm as small forwards, heck they're both bigger than our centre half forward, Hamill

BTW if Crowell needs that sort of inspiration to perform his future may lay elsewhere ;)

Will be the best youngster out of the most talented youngest list in the AFL.

Hasn't there been enough Riewoldt references on bigfooty to last a lifetime?

From what I saw of Cole he is going to be the next Sean Charles, not Wanganeen.

Was very much 'stage-struck' in the games I saw. He looked overawed by the game/pace/crowd etc. Fair enough too I guess he is still only a kid. But he will have to get that out of his game before his natural ability (of which he does look to have plenty) can be allowed to shine.

10 is to many to name anyway. For what its worth my top 3 kids to step up into 'elite' class.

1. Rob Murphy. Oozes football smarts. Of all the non KP youngsters in the league, Id grab him first.
2. Steve Armstrong. Hoping he can overcome the tragic Bali incident. Really impressed me and if he can get back to 100% fitness I reckon he will more than cover Woewodins loss.
3. S. ( :( <-- cause he went with the pick the Hawks traded for Rehn) Burgoyne. Got a touch of the 'X' factor about him. Might never really step up all the way but there WILL be games he will just be brilliant in.

Btw The original article was all over the shop. Talk about cake and eating it too with both Reiwoldt AND Kosi as the numero unos! Well duh!!

8. D. Rodan
7. G. Polak
6. X. Clarke
5. B. Schammer
4. D. Wells
3. L. Hodge
2. L. Ball
1. C. Judd

I pretty much agree there. I'm really looking forward to see Hodge, Ball, Judd, Wells, Goddard and Salopek to play. Basically, the 3 best players from the last 2 drafts.

First up, a question. How the hell does Kennelly pronounce his given name?

IMHO, Cloke will be a 200 game+ player for Collingwood. Just what they need - someone to dominate the air across half-back. Sadly missed in the GF, but the loss of McDonald early probably cancelled that out. His game against Brisbane at Colonial last season was sensational. Only problem may be that he is an early developer and may not improve as much as others mentioned.

With full acknowledgement of bias, I'd suggest Brisbane's Jason Gram may reward closer inspection. Only saw him in a pre-season match, but another year of development may augment his ball-handling and grace under pressure.

Hodge will be a gun.

I can't believe no one had mentioned him before this clearly intelligent poster

But I remember reading somewhere that Hodge was unable to kick over a jam tin on his right due to his OP. (this was mid-season, after he was allready playing seniors).

I can only guess that his OP was more concentrated on the right, or perhaps he had complications (hamstring tightness, or similar on the inside (groin tightness...hmm...) that stopped him from kicking freely on the right.

And Brett? I noticed it too, I can vaguely recall a conversation on the old HH message board regarding this very topic (although maybe more round 15 or so).
