Thanks for that. The lad still has a proud family history.
Yep similar to current AFL star Connor Rozee also a Port Augusta lad with a similar history...Connor's dad Robert was a champion South Augusta footballer that captained and coached them also, also played SANFL for South Adelaide for a period. Kane like Connor excelled at cricket and other sports as well.

Hey PMBangers, love your work - long time reader, first time questioner.

Who do you see as being the best half-forward/mid types (think Martin, JDG, Petracca et al) in this draft class?
In the true mould of those guys I think Koltyn Tholstrup fits the bill best currently as a guy that is genuinely an impactful contested player through the midfield and damaging resting forward, with Kane McAuliffe capable of that too, but there's a few putting their hands up that play that split role well; Duursma, Wilson, Freijah, Johnston, but none of those guys have the same stoppage/ contested ball impact.

I think Moir has the potential to be THAT guy of the draft class, but just hasn't been rotated through the guts at all this year so it's harder to get a gauge of. I also like Will Lorenz, he's similar to Tholstrup in his comfortability woth contested ball, but he hasn't really set the world alight early days this season

Thoughts on Hamish Pierson for the MSD?
Unless he kills the young guns games I don't think it's an overly high chance, just hasn't improved enough from past year to have pushed himself as a 'must select' option from my viewings, and in general I think it's better to hold off until end of year on those types

Thoughts on Jack Delean? Noticed he's not in your top 20 but have seen him rated in others top 10.
Just a victim of a lot of players improving early season whilst not really doing much more himself, still think he's a good prospect but there's really not much 'new' or improved to his game from last season

I've got a question mate!

Why are the AFL scouts/recruiters/WAFL Academy trying to make Daniel Curtin into the "jack of all trades" when he is already very adept at one.

Is there something wrong with just being a very accomplished specialist defender nowadays?

Preaching to the choir with that one, I've been saying it all season!

Most recruiters seem to think Curtin is best as a defender and that's where his future at AFL level lays as well, so I'm not sure if it's more Claremont lead or others being led astray. I can understand from a certain point of view, he's already the best KPD in the pool and wouldn't be able to do much more down in defence at Colts level to improve his overall stocks, so maybe someone sees that potentially versatility as the key to him going higher overall. Hopefully he just gets a seniors call up and plays permanently down back at some stage though

Pretty amazing stat line from his midfield game. Can’t see why that’s a bad thing to see his versatility

Sure but I see nothing wrong with being a pure defender and being really good at it.

I guess I'm not seeing this from a recruiter point of view. They have a valuable pick and they want to get the most value from it. Fair enough!

But for me, Curtin is going to get drafted. I don't care where and now it's time to really have a close look at the players like Lance Collard (S), Koen Sanchez (EF), Aiden O'Driscoll (P), Reece Torrent (PT), Coen Livingstone (P), Presley Campbell (EF), Jacob Whan (SF), Oscar Dees (S), Sam Van Rooyen (CL), Kai Dehavilland (CL), Bailey Harbour (EP), Luker Kentfield (S), Xavier Walsh (EP), Zane Zakostelsky (CL), Evan Smith (SD, Joe Matthews (CL) etc

In other years they would all be in the WA top 10. This year is a bit different. Next year not so much. In fact next year is not looking too good so far.

But yeah, it's the players not properly on the national radar that excite me this year.

Curtin is home and hosed barring a catastrophe.

Curtin is by far the best key defender in the draft, 196cm probably grows a little more. But he is a really good mover, he has great closing speed, which showed through traffic with good explosiveness and he's quite agile, he dominated in the midfield with 26 disposals, 20 being kicks, 18 being contested and 12 clearances, 11 tackles.

Unreal.

Curtins numbers were good but too be honest it wasn't a draft stock increasing game imo, a lot of what he did can just be whittled down to him being bigger and smarter than, and this may be cruel, poor opposition. May have come across differently live than on stream but there wasn't a whole heap of eye catching athleticism on display that makes you wonder if he's got a future in the guts

Had a friend go and watch it and he said he reacts first, his footy iq seems off the charts in being able to read the play quicker than others, and for his height and size he moves really well through traffic, both agility wise but also good explosiveness. Which shows down back where he is able to catch forwards on the lead.

Alvaro generally gets it spot on, although he tends to have his favourites and sometimes writes the obvious, even if they have a ordinary game.
Nah Michaels pretty straight down the middle with his analysis imo, we are somewhat restricted in how we word things as well, can't go out and start shitting on prospects even if they have a bad day.

No

If he's still on a list I don't see why not
PMbangers, noted - although Alvaro has done it again with his notes on the young guns game on the weekend. Mentions his favourites and writes about players who have hardly touched it. No need to shit on prospects just don’t write about them if they don’t get a kick. There were players in the metro team that dominated and didn’t get a mention. It’s actually becoming boring journalism.

Anyone in particular you think deserved a mention?

Kako, Greco and Dear just to name a few.
Kako an oversight I agree, Dear and Grego I understand the omissions from the notes though, really no one that's been written about I'd argue they impressed more though, unless you're preparing for another Logan Morris rant?

Rankings to updated when I can be bothered

PMBangers you have Nicholas Watson currently at no2, do you see him slipping significantly down the order given he is only 170cm?? I cannot recall a player this small being drafted that early on. Will clubs pass on him? And if they do, how far do you feel he will drop?? Is he worth a selection at pick 2 for a club like north Melbourne or WC over a bigger mid like moir?

It'll depend on who ends up woth those early picks, I've mentioned on the GWS board that Watson is the sort of player I don't see us passing on should he be available even within the top 5. Gut feel says that it's an unfortunate yes, but in a similar vein to Errol Gulden I really think Watson will quickly make some clubs look silly should he slide.

Unless Moir starts to actually get some Midfield rotation, or maintains his numbers at a higher level of competition, I don't think he'll end up a top 3 pick, at this early stage it's more the Duursma's, Curtin's and possibly McKercher's contending for the picks after Reid

Thanks for agreeing PMbangers and I thought Morris went well and probably deserved his mention 👍

Kako and Grego were good. Kako was the best on the 2024 group, very lively up fwd. Unfortunately for me Dear was quiet although he does have some nice attributes.

Agree, also thought Nyko was good and seems to rack them up at Coates level. Interested to see who makes the final metro squad.
