I'm a Broomy disciple and have watched a bit of him this year. But I wonder how much of my support is hope? I think he's shown a bit and would hope that he can step into the 22 and show some more next year. That pick was important.

I don't think we 'have' to find ready-mades or win win the flag next year. Our situation isn't desperate because the age profile of our team means we are in transition - we've shed a lot of our older guard but retain a strong nucleus of that very young 2010 premiership team. What we need to do is measure that up with another group of talent coming into their 2-3rd year while the first group are still around their peak. This is exactly what Sydney did between 2005 and 2012. I'd be hoping we can do it between 2010 and 2016. After that you might see Gold Coast and GWS having a ball.

I think i've narrowed it down to wanting Bontempelli and Lennon.

But would not walk away dissapointed to see Aish, Salem or Sharenberg in Collingwood colours. All seem big chances to be available...although Aish is probably a long shot.

Sharenberg is the interesting one because he is probably worthy of a top 5 pick but will slip to us...but we will probably look for more of a game-breaking midfielder.

That's interesting as all recruiters say they take the best available player, particularly with their first pick. I picked Sheed based on what i saw in the U/18's but after watching all the vids i'd now go Sharenberg.

Listening to the draft podcast, appears we will simply take the slider from the suggested top 6 players that appears pretty clear cut from the casual observer.

I get the feeling we rate Bont but not with pick 6.

Slider + Bont unless taken by Brisbane or Dees. If that's the case, Salem & Freeman appear to be the 2 talked about most for pick 10.

Looks like it is down to 5 unless there is a slider.schernberg, bontempelli, freeman,Lennon and Salem.whatever 2 we get is a win,for me I would want scharenberg and freeman.

FYI - some comments and questions gleaned from the afl.com draft chat by Callum Twomey.

Love your work, Cal. As a keen draft enthusiast, I can really see the Pies rolling the dice at pick 6 and taking Nathan Freeman and hoping that Bontempelli is there at pick 10. I know for the fact the Pies are strongly considering him at 6. What are your thoughts?
JC, Freeman is in the mix, definitely. Tough game for the Pies, though, in trying to get both players they want at both picks but working out which might be available at 10 and which might not.
Comment From Stu
Heard a few rumors about the Pies first pick. Who in your opinion do you think they will get at 6?
Stu, for me I think it is either Bontempelli or Scharenberg, but most likely Scharenberg. Neither will probably last to their next pick at 10 you'd think.
Comment From Me
Any chance McCarthy to Pies at 10?
As for McCarthy to the Pies, I would doubt that as well, especially given they've just recruited Jesse White as that taller type. But not unimaginable.
Comment From PM
Hi, CT, your time of year I guess. Scharenberg pick 6 and Lennon pick 10 to pies for me. Could both guys make immediate impact in your opinion?
Comment From Troy
Hey Cal, great job on the draft mate, it makes for some good reading hey who do you think will turn out to be the better player Bontempelli or Scharenberg?
Troy, good question. Maybe long-term Bontempelli could play more positions potentially, given he is an inch or so taller than Scharenberg. But they are about even at the moment, even though Scharenberg is more ready to go next year.
Collingwood will have only two picks - 6 & 10. Not a bad night for them!

Curious as to whether labelling Broomhead as most impressive of our young draftees excluded Grundy due to his injury (I'm not sure if he was injured at the time, hence a legit question) or if you just rated B higher than G. If latter than have your ratings changed? (Again a legit question as I know more about Grundy than Broomhead.)

Grundy was resting with stress fractures in his back at that stage, so wasn't playing. Of course, this late start to a preseason would have undoubtedly caused SpidersFromMars to label him a useless dud who was costing us premierships.

I am not a troll but I will simply say if we picked Bartel or Stevie Johnson, we win at least TWO more premiership maybe 3.
And how exactly were we supposed to pick Bartel when he went three spots before our first pick, genius?

You don't want to win Premierships?!?!?!?

That is what is wrong with Collingwood supporters on this site, they don't want to really win premierships.

You're right. Premierships are won by going off half-cocked on an internet forum about players you know nothing about

You would have drafted Nathan Jones ahead of Scott Pendlebury because he was bound to have a bigger impact in his first year. You would have passed up Nic Naitanui for Daniel Rich because Rich was a ready made footballer.

Your line of reasoning is ridiculous, and this whole calling out of people for being younger (and in your mind, dumber) than you is entirely childish. No one cares how old you are - We can see from your posts that you're a windbag, and you have got no idea what you're talking about. Moreover, half the people you're calling a peanut are nowhere near as young as you have cast them as, myself included.

It's all hypothetical talking about picking players in past drafts (and it's pointless because it's not like anyone can do anything about it). What also seems to get overlooked is that if for example the Pies got Bartel instead of Egan, the team probably wouldn't finished where they did in later drafts, so in effect it'd cost players like Pendlebury and Reid.

Freeman is your man if you want some genuine Lou Reed. I keep to the opinion that Bonts, while tall will take a lot longer to come on.

Are you suggesting he likes to cruise the Dirty Boulevard?

This is the most poignant remark re: hindsight and one that isnt acknowledged enough
The "butterfly effect": if we had picked player B in year X may mean we finished in a different ladder position in subsequent years and therefore no Daisy, Pendles, Sidebottom, Beams etc etc
We may have won 1, 5, 0 premierships - we'll never know.
Maybe picking Chris Egan was a masterstroke in 04 as it allowed us to get picks 2 + 5 in 2005...??
All we can do is support who we have and who we draft.

As for who at 6 + 10 my head hurts from thinking about it and i no longer have any idea who i want.

fingers crossed that when we look back that we realise we got the 2 best players available

That is what is wrong with Collingwood supporters on this site, they don't want to really win premierships.

Remember, we traded down for Chris Egan....we actually had a higher pick and wasted it.

Jordan Lewis, the boy from Warrnambool was a no brainer, how we missed him is non sensical.

He is a gun.

So to say that we still aren't affected by some terrible decisions with draft picks as high as we have here is balony..

We can all look back at previous drafts and wish we'd picked different players but it won't change anything. Ed D rightly points out that getting Johnson and finishing higher could have cost us Pendlebury or Reid as we'd have lower picks.

Unless you have posts from the time of those drafts saying how terrible a decision something was than criticising them with hindsight is invalid. (Otherwise every club would be terrible for leaving Dane Swan to pick 58.)

If you think even your fellow Pies supporters on this site have so much wrong with them, maybe you shouldn't be posting.

I found it interesting on the AFL podcast Cal Twomey mentioned that Scharenberg is good mates with Grundy, especially as he looks like he's going to slide to our pick.

From what I've heard it's sounding like Bontempelli or Scharenberg unless Aish slides for pick 6, and Lennon, Freeman or Salem for pick 10.

Can 100% confirm Collingwood's order of preference at the draft for Pick 6;

1: Matthew Scharenberg
2: James Aish
3: Marcus Bontemeplli

So how was lunch with Derek?

Anyway, if true I like this news. Get Scharenberg and all religious Collingwood fans can pay to their gods and the rest of us can pray to Nathan Buckley that Bontempelli gets through to 10. Will be exciting.

Tbh I can't see bontempelli being snagged at 7 or 9. Melbourne love freeman and need to get some explosive speed into their midfield desperately, I think Brisbane will look elsewhere but I guess they are a bit of a wild card.

Chances of Shara being there at 6?

This would be perfect for us!

I think Brisbane will be going Bontempelli/Scharenberg unless they're both gone. Lennon probably in that scenario.

Scharenberg is definitely my #1 preferred option of those likely to be available by a wide margin. I'd only like Tom Boyd and *maybe* Jack Billings over him, and even then I'm not sure about Billings.
