Roast Port Adelaide's failure to do a HIA assessment on Aliir - [AFL confirms both players FAILED concussion tests on Monday]

Honest question

Should a AFL player be allowed to refuse to join Port Adelaide after this due to potential health and safety concerns? If I was a parent and my kid was in the draft, Port is 100% the last club I want them at.

Its almost worth adding in as part of the punishment. Joining Port should be up to the players and parents for the time being

AFL likes to exist in its own little bubble. Any other environment, Safework SA would have a field day if someone got a heavy knock to the head and told to finish their shift. The worker(s) would be right to stop work until the issue was resolved (ideally as a union)

Trying to think of a parallel for footy: Any player, at any club, that didn't feel the club's medical staff had their welfare front-of-mind should be able to sit themselves out. I'd hope the AFLPA would back them up on it and force the league to intervene.

ALso who is paying 2 neurologists (who get around 400 bucks a hour) to take a day off to go watch a football game cos 1 moron couldnt leave his bias at home?

Itd be atleast 1 mill to put said system in place and a complete and utter waste of resources for all involved

Aliir and Jones were both OUT. Everyone watching could see it. Aliir was limp immediately after the contact and crumpled to the ground.

The fact that Aliir then went back into the game approximately 5 minutes later with no HIA being undertaken by the Port Adelaide medical staff is simply unforgiveable in the modern AFL.

There is going to be an absolutely massive penalty coming Port Adelaide's way for this.

AND U R A DOCTOR??
If the doctor was satisfied he was not concussed then who are all these wannabe doctors out there to say otherwise.
People can often be distressed from a severe blow to the body, r they concussed and do they get a concussion test.
Dramatisation at its best, when u get your degree in medicine then u can pass judgement on your fellow colleagues otherwise keep your opinion to an opinion and don’t talk like u r an expert on the matter
U could sprout all u like but u didn’t hear the conversation nor why the doctor made the call on ALL the available footage. Maybe he/she was satisfied he didn’t require a full test.

Have you read the Port website today? You should read the statement before shooting off...he admits a test should have been done.

I do laugh a little at the pile on regarding punishments on here.

Now is not the time as the focus should rightly be on Port, but rest assured we aren't Robinson Crusoe in this

worst i've seen at it over the past decade.

watched a lot of neutral games and i usually see an abundance of caution after a head knock. not us.

jay schulz with a brain injury. brad ebert getting head knocks for years and years and sent back out being "brave"

club fined for breaching protocols after hartletts concussion.

butters and jonas head clash last year and both back on within minutes.

being a supporter of a club doesn't mean you can't be objective. we need to improve, and that improvement can start with sacking this shithouse doctor (and KENNY)

as i've been saying since last year when the idiot put jonas and butters straight back in after a head clash, the doctor needs to be fired.

ken hinkley fired for endorsing it.

and probably a 50k fine as well.

and in future all games to have an independent doctor at the ground, with expertise in head trauma to make the call. don't leave it up to club staff.

Kudos to you and a couple others who have been on the right side of this from the start.

Not so much some of your other BF Port supporters who blamed
  • Roo and Dunstall for mentioning it
  • the AFL for not having an independent doctor
  • the SANFL
and their go to was "what would all these armchair doctors know".

In the end the armchair doctors knew better than the Port medical staff - how scary for your players.

Edit: The sanctions have to be more than just a fine, AFL already tried that for the same type of incident. Maybe make them sign Ken for another 5 years.

Are you taking the piss? Surely you’re not serious. Keep up to date, Snort Powder has placed them under the Concussion Protocol today.

I would hope the AFL investigate any pressure other Port staff may have exerted in the decision to send him back on.

The doctor having form on this makes him an easy scapegoat for the club, but if Ken or anyone else interfered in the decision-making at the time, they also need to be booted.

Chris Davies probably played a part

I agree with what you say, but that wasn't my point.

John Ralph on “On the Couch” thinks fines as well, seeing the AFL didn’t fine them last time, so can’t all of a sudden jump to something like losing draft pick.

Not sure what the point of a fine is, they got a fine last time and have since had 1 questionable incident and now this howler.

They are a welfare club so any large fine the AFL ends up just paying themselves.

I don't agree with a loss of points, as that hurts the playing group and supporters mostly - but i definitely think they should be expelled from the National draft , indefinitely. This should then be reviewed prior to the rookie draft & if the AFL is satisfied they have made adequate changes to their medical team, they will be reinstated back into future Drafts, starting with the 2023 pre-season & rookies draft, as well as fined considerably.

Not much of a punishment as currently their first pick is 37 and they only have 3 live picks at the moment.
