Roast Port Adelaide's failure to do a HIA assessment on Aliir - [AFL confirms both players FAILED concussion tests on Monday]

The thing is, if the doctors ticked it off, what can the AFL realistically do in this scenario? Port Adelaide will just say we took our doctors word that Aliir was okay, who are we to argue with him as our hired medical professional?
If anything, it's the doctor that should be facing the consequences for okaying it. I don't think the club can be held accountable when we've hired this doctor specifically as our medical professional to give us the best advice.

Nailed it.

Doctor has to be sacked.

Not much of a punishment as currently their first pick is 37 and they only have 3 live picks at the moment.

true.

For each round they are not currently represented, it carries over to 2024 then. It would mean they could chose to trade back into the missing rounds to isolate the suspension to just 1 season - or wear it over 2.

Not one of the Crows fans who loves bashing Port (I think they've been a much better run Club than us for quite a while), but was amazed when Alir came back on, and then the ridiculous 'migraine' label for Jones.

What the hell were they thinking, this was never going to accepted.

The sanctions need to be significant.

Caro who is pretty well connected to the AFL, is saying large fine rather than any other sanctions

Makes sense.

+ the doctor sacked for the safety of the players.

Hopefully independent, smarter doctors will come in from now as an AFL rule for all clubs.

There’s absolutely nothing to suggest this was anything other than a mistake, but unfortunately one too many for that doctor, so a well deserving sacking on the cards.

Also I am sure it may have been discussed elsewhere, but what is stopping the appointment of independent doctors to make these assessments, like the NRL and NFL?

Why not just enforce the existing protocols correctly?

It's such an AFL thing to over-react to an incident and re-invent the wheel as a result - whack the hell out of Port for this, and let it known that any such attempts to manipulate the process in the future will result in even more severe sanctions (ie, loss of points).

If you were a Port Adelaide player, you’d question whether the club actually cares about your overall health

Same with the Crows boys after their camp. Disgraceful really.

Unfortunately that was all behind closed doors and took the courage of a few players to stand up for what was right against a club doing absolutely everything they could to sweep it all under the rug.

At least this mistake was public and didn’t take the victims coming forward with too much of a bulk of evidence for the club to deny deny deny anymore.

The fact that literally every club cares about their player's welfare makes an "independent" doctor an unnecessary expense.

Every club except Port that is, they only care about WINNING.

Fair dinkum, if the topic of discussion weren't so serious, I'd suggest this thread be moved to the bay.
Expelled from the national draft indefinitely, serious.

We'll get a big fine, they wont take points off us as the AFL is a business that relies on money, they won't turn their back on the revenue from 50k ticket sales from SA people.
Its like you people have never watched AFL before..lol
Personally, I'd take the points hit, we're not winning the flag this year anyway so would be akin to a slap with a wet lettuce leaf.

Now, continue with the outrage.

Did some goolging located this document which is a concussion test.

STEP 2: OBSERVABLE SIGNS Witnessed  Observed on Video 
Lying motionless on the playing surface Y N
Balance / gait difficulties / motor incoordination: stumbling, slow / laboured movements Y N
Disorientation or confusion, or an inability to respond appropriately to questions Y N
Blank or vacant look Y N Facial injury after head trauma Y N

"If any of the “Red Flags“ or observable signs are noted after a direct or indirect blow to the head, the athlete should be immediately and safely removed from participation and evaluated by a physician or licensed healthcare professional."

So why hasn't this "doctor" been stripped of his medical licence? Because I'm pretty sure I saw at least 2 of those signs.

As for the red flags, one of them is a headache after head contact. But Jones didn't do a concussion test, he was observed to have headaches and that was why he was subbed off. So that's strike 2 for the doctor.

The real question the AFL has to get to the bottom of, is is it the incompetent doctor's fault 100%, or did Ken Hinkley order the doctor not to run any concussion tests?

Except common sense, logic, evidence, the fact this exact situation has (incredibly) happened before, and the sheer impossibility that an actual doctor could possibly watch footage of Aliir and Jones smashing their skulls together, and lying motionless on the ground afterwards, and somehow not consider that a concussion test was required.

Absolutely agree. Doctor needs to be sacked. The club can’t be relying on someone that incompetent to make such a crucial mistake completely and totally in his hands as the sole deciding medical official at the ground.

AND U R A DOCTOR??
If the doctor was satisfied he was not concussed then who are all these wannabe doctors out there to say otherwise.
People can often be distressed from a severe blow to the body, r they concussed and do they get a concussion test.
Dramatisation at its best, when u get your degree in medicine then u can pass judgement on your fellow colleagues otherwise keep your opinion to an opinion and don’t talk like u r an expert on the matter
U could sprout all u like but u didn’t hear the conversation nor why the doctor made the call on ALL the available footage. Maybe he/she was satisfied he didn’t require a full test.

Most of us have been guilty at times for rose coloured glasses and loyalty to our clubs but your comment is next level absurdity

Did anyone notice on the coverage of the incident at how happy the racist Walker was in the background? He was smiling and geeing up Thilthorpe at how great it was that both their direct opponents would be going off with concussion.

The TV footage focused in on it and the commentators also pointed it out. One of the most appalling opposition player reactions I've seen on a footy field to players being seriously injured.

But they weren’t seriously injured. The Port doctor said so. So it’s fine for him to be happy that his opponent has a migraine and the other is fine.

It would also appear that the AFL has stuffed up too. It's possible the Doctor didn't see the incident in real time but the AFL via the ARC should have made the Doctor aware of it and made him conduct an assessment. Surely once the ARC saw Allir running around 5 minutes after being knocked out, they should have contacted the Doctor.

A fine is meaningless.

You have to do something that actually makes them hurt.

Exactly, second or third offense.

As someone mentioned earlier the penalty has to be high so clubs won't pull this sort of malarky in a grand final.

Kenny, Davies and the Doc would happily wear a fine to get their player back out there in a GF - we just saw them do it.

shows how much you care about your players safety if you can't objectively view this as a huge **** up, as well as question his credentials given how he made a judgement call this bad
