How jaded and joyless did he become? Seriously.

In the space of 5 years he went from an explosive, bouncing kid who always had a smile on his face with seemingly limitless potential to go with his infectious enthusiasm to a grizzled, snarling, pessimist as if he'd been worn down by decades of loveless marriage.

Yeah I remember Pearcey being interviewed after a game early in his career. Smile from ear to ear and whilst I can't remember the question he was asked, I just loved the response he gave which was along the basis of 'how good is it to pLay AFL'.
It's how he played the game then came Choco and his New master plan of having elite razzle dazzle players and don't worry bout anything else.

I reckon it was after a st kilda win in Melbourne. I still remember the steam coming off him as he talked. He really enjoyed his footy back then.

I suspect Pearce was just as enthusiastic all the time under Choco from interviews I've heard of Choco himself.

This year would have been bloody depressing though. He wanted to be the best, and our team was just losing every bloody week. Moving away for a fresh change of scenery was probably a very attractive deal for him.

I heard rumours some time ago that Rohde had been openly deriding our players [I'm sure I'm on record saying that some time ago] and that during this process Cripps and Rohde haven't been able to remain impartial and are merely removing the players who have stood up to their Draconian and improper running of our club. Their actions during this trade/delist/free agency period tends to support the people who told me of these

Also, the four year contract thing, as far as I am aware is true. Rohde is a cancer and is killing the club from the inside. The footy ops manager should be working with the players not pulling against them

Don't get me wrong, change is needed and necessary but not from the current idiots who have instigated it

This is spot on...the internal goings on and treatment of certain players by both Rhode and Cripps and even some of the individual coaches towards players, have been totally unprofessional. Many fans blame the individual player but they have no idea of what goes on within the walls of the club...only the players, employees and those close to them know. I know that many of the players understand why some are leaving, as they witness the unfair treatment of certain players.

Many fans see Pearce as lazy etc yet many good coaches do not and he had a lot of interest by other clubs, in particular Adelaide and Freo, both finals contenders and they saw nothing wrong with offering him an unconditonal four year deal. Chaplin also drew interest from other clubs but chose Richmond where he knows so many.

The term of a contract gives security but not a guarantee of a place on a field and those who say players become lazy or do not try have no idea...each player is under enormous stress to perform each week...oppositions set out to stop them and our team play individually and do not block, shepherd etc for each other.

Our coaches should take the blame for the rot that has set in. They have had little idea how to deal with players and create a strong team bond, they have played groups against each other... for what purpose?

Let's hope the new regime can fix this and we as a club can move forward. Just a pity that they did not have some of the senior players to help them.

You're from Melbourne and have what seems like a lot of 'inside' info. Interesting.

I'm not convinced all these Port supporters new to Bigfooty or new to posting here are really Port supporters.

Yeah sure, such a pity we don't have those senior players to help the new coaching regime, you know the same effing players that have been here for **** knows how long and have done such a marvelous job assisting our kids play like effing spuds....

Love how some people expect certain players to block, shepherd and take the hard hits for their teammates, the same teammates that refuse to chase, put defensive pressure on when it's their turn and don't work hard enough to break tags or fluff kicks when under virtually no pressure.....

Let's stick with the same mob that have been part of the shittiest era of our history because well you know, we don't have any other tall defenders or guys we think can run fast

But hey, apparently someone's brothers second cousins next door Neighbour heard on Facebook that rhode abused a player once, in a dream.......I think!

Yup let's invest our future by sticking with guys that aren't willing to put their balls on the line, sign a ****ing 2 or 3 year deal with the club that has played them for over 6 years, show genuine composed leadership on field for the kids to learn from and earn another 2-3 year contract extension!

Yep - directly proportional to the amount of unfounded rumour innuendo shyte that gets thrown around.

These people pretend to know player salaries, who the nancy boy cry babies are, little inner sanctum - my gang's better than your gang - groupie nancy boys. All this of course has been going on for years, but except for this year, coinciding with real coaching change and FA, is the only year where we have lost 'significant' player numbers.

Trolls be gone.

I have considerable concern re the vilifying and denigration of various players and PAFC personnel with statements going way beyond 'acceptable/reasonable comment'.

If you believe your concerns are genuine then there is an obligation to inform the PAFC in writing including your full name and address rather than posting anonymous comments on internet forums.

A couple of the above posts would not be acceptable in the workplace or anywhere else in society - would those posters be totally comfortable with others posting similar comments about them.

I agree, not only that, we have had an excellent retention rate.

I would suspect gold passes removed, working for their dollars and life appears easier elsewhere

Rather than reading the last 35-40 pages of this thread, has the following been mentioned / discussed. This is from the AFL's website on Saturday morning.

Saints given pick 13 for BJ

Restricted free agent Angus Monfries joined Port Adelaide on a four-year deal, but Essendon accepted the Power's third-round pick (48) in exchange for Monfries with Port keen to maximise the compensation it will receive for the loss of Pearce and Chaplin.

Free agents like Russell, Thornton and Salopek can still join a club without nominating for the NAB AFL Draft after November 1 when delisted players are free to sign with any club, but compensation will not be awarded for players signed in this manner.

Saints given pick 13 for BJ

Have we been tempting Russell ( and maybe Thorton???) to walk to us for nothing to help build our backline??

If so maybe Rohde and the boys aren't as dumb as we think. Or have they worked out how to get average players for nothing??

Free agency: What we learned

If Hawthorn had known they would lose back-up defender Tom Murphy and premiership player Clinton Young (plus his laser-guided left boot) for the sum total of pick 66 in the draft, there is no way they would have agreed to free agency in its present form. Likewise, Melbourne can consider themselves harshly treated after the AFL determined Jared Rivers and Brent Moloney minus Shannon Byrnes equalled pick 49. Meanwhile, Port Adelaide made out like bandits with two second-round picks (30 and 31) for Danyle Pearce and Troy Chaplin.

Since when was losing a pair of established top-10 first teamers with 4-5 years left for a pair of faceless second round picks 'making out like bandits', as if they're actually worth even less?

Because we're Port Power. Der.

Rohde has been saying for a while now that we weren't going to consider Russell until the end of the trade period. I've always thought by that he meant that Russell would be a delisted free agent freebie. Guys like Gillies and Gilham might wind up there too.

I'd hope we've gone off Gilham now. Carlile, Trengove, Hombsch, Blee and Salter/P. Stew/Westhoff if we're desperate is enough that we shouldn't be using up a list spot on a defender purely for depth. I could handle Gillies or someone like Bower, since they're young enough to have a future, but Gilham would just be a list clogger at this point.

I'd like us to take Gillies, he's a real defender, not a bloke played there just coz.
