As for Spike Mahney...Ive got the Port 84 video at home and in his first season he was a real livewire. Kicked 30 goals or so for the year, looked similar to Robbie Gray. Was pretty quick, massive leap, great goalsense.

Then he put on about 25 kilos and became an enforcer type in the forward line. Still played in a couple of flags. Was one of my favourites growing up.

One of my earliest endearing memories of football is Mahney taking it up to Sniper Salisbury in either the 88 or 90 GF.

When you look at the 1%ers, the perhaps forgettable and uncredited people, events and actions that ultimately led to the ultimate evolution from Magpies to Power, guys like Mahney were every bit as important as the galaxy of stars that readily come to mind.

Knuckles

Saw Wayne with Rohan Smith and a few others at Crown Casino the night before last years GF. He certainly hasn't lost any of those 25 kilos.

I'd like to see a Crow supporter name one player that played for the Crows in the late 80's that was half as good as Mahney ;)

Squad named. No Thomas, but Lade and Wilson are a chance.

The Power’s squad of 25 to face the Crows, as named at 4.30pm on Thursday, is as follows…

B: Michael Pettigrew, Alipate Carlile, Nick Lower
HB:Jacob Surjan, Troy Chaplin, Nathan Lonie
C: Domenic Cassisi, Adam Thomson, Kane Cornes
HF: David Rodan, Warren Tredrea, Brett Ebert
F: Justin Westhoff, Daniel Motlop, Chad Cornes
Foll: Dean Brogan, Shaun Burgoyne, Danyle Pearce
Interchange: Greg Bentley, Fabian Deluca, Tom Logan, Paul Stewart, Brendon Lade, Michael Wilson, Steven Salopek

IN: Lade, Salopek, Stewart, Wilson
OUT: White (hamstring)

Matty Primus pretty much confirmed Lade in for Deluca. Salopek in for White if Sal gets thru training ok tomorrow you'd think. Bentley would be the unlucky one for Wilson to come back in.

how much of the Grand Final do they show in that Port 84 video?

Maybe 8 minutes or so

Great Grand Final, Balme v Evans, Aish run down the wing etc. Dwayne Russell was a star in those days, not quite big enough for CHF in the VFL but I'm still surprised he didn't do better. I love watching Leslie belting Fosdike as Fosdike back pedals looking as scared as any man on Earth

Yeah that's all very interesting. If I had time I'd reminisce about moments from the 1988, 89, 90, 92, 94, 95 and 96 GF's before Port joined the AFL and won the 04 GF. How did Norwood go in those years again? :)

beat Port in 97 7 days after the Crows flag. That was a good week. Keating had 3 touches total in 2 games, 2 flags.

Apart from that we lost about 50 Prelim Finals

A few other Crows players backed up for the 97 SANFL GF didn't they? I vaguely remember Troy Bond playing for Port.

Yeah that'd be the Port Magpies, after Port Adelaide had joined the AFL. After Port leave the SANFL, Norwood make their big statements about dominating the SANFL. That all turned to dust and disarray too, pretty much on the heels of the 1999 SANFL GF. Tommy Carr on Andrew Pascoe. End of another dynasty. ;)

bit tough. 1 flag each since 97. How are Port Magpies going at the moment? Tough year at Alberton. As least I've got the Taylor Walker led 2008 premiers to watch

Port Magpies won two flags since 97. But if you want to discuss the reserves comp, better go to the Twilight Zone Board. ;)

yes, my mistake 98 v Sturt. 5 points to Jared Twitt. Cant expect me to remember all Port flags in my lifetime. I've been at every one since 77. Cant we talk about 84 some more?

Only if we can talk about that 88 final between Port and Norwood and the 1980 GF.

Aaron Keating as well.

Also remember Eugene Warrior having huge game that day.

That was in the reserves. 5 goals down at 3/4 time and we got up by a point, pretty much all thanks to Euge.
