Player Watch Welcome to Port Adelaide Pick #38 (2024) - Christian Moraes

That strong and engaging character and family environment seem to go a long way with Port's recruiters.

Berry, Whitlock and Moraes all seem such good speakers already and from strong families and sporting environments. And Whitlock wants to prove something being overlooked to pick 33, he's going to be all in at Port.

I remember the days when talking to young recruits was like watching Molly Meldrum trying to interview Paul Cook and Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols.

I actually just watched that interview, I tried anyway.

What a great kid. You just smile all through that interview.

Was interesting that he said he thought he would go a few picks earlier. ;)

Give this kid space and time and he'll hurt you. He's not the best kick when in traffic but when he's got some space he'll use his speed to effect and deliver it well by foot. In traffic he needs to be a bit more composed when going by foot but the flipside to that is his handballs in traffic are very good.

I reckon he has the highest ceiling of the 3 draftees. Just needs to build a bit of self-confidence and he'll do great

I think Mead is the player who should be most nervous by this selection. Could be an instant upgrade
Mead's instant upgrade in Joe Richards imo. Playing that high half forward role with some time on the wing. That's what Richards did at Collingwood. But agree that Moraes could also be a long term alternative to that position.

There’s a humility and self-deprecating, even self-critical nature to Moraes that is already endearing. It sounds like he is a fairly harsh and honest judge of himself. I’ve seen three interviews - two with him and one with Parker - where he has stated that he was disappointed in his 2024 season. His numbers and highlights still look good on the surface but it sounds like he had some inconsistent form and quieter games through the middle of the year, including in the U18 carnival. Reckon he puts a lot of pressure on himself which may make him too nervous to perform at his best sometimes. If we can get that balance right and turn his self-critical nature into a hard work ethic and drive to improve, but also instil confidence in himself, he may be able to become a really top-line player.

It sounds like he could very much be an option on a wing, which gives us three now in Burgoyne, Lorenz and Moraes.
Absolutely agree, Christian appears to set lofty standards for himself, yet his form was strong enough to garner selection in the Victorian Metro State team…….. some players might be happy to hang their hat on that alone…… but with credit, apparently not Christian. He wanted more ……

Geoff Parker said he had to remind Christian in his interview that he had a very good season so don't be too hard on yourself.

Great reaction to being drafted by Port.

The worst reaction ever was a 17 yo Josh Carr who looked like he’d been drafted to fight in Vietnam. Funny thing is he has voluntarily come back to the club 3 times since and will probably end up the club’s first AFL Premiership player and Coach.
Agreed great reaction by Moraes and he appears to know something about the PAFC which is good to see.

I can't recall seeing Josh Carr's reaction to being drafted by us, but his playing career turned out pretty well given he played a major role in the 2004 gf, and as you say there has to be a chance he could add a successful coaching accolade to his resume as well.

The bloke who stood out to me as not wanting to be here when his name was called and making no attempt to hide it was Mason Shaw.

He used to barely mouth the words to the Maggie's song after wins, had a dummy spit when the club decided to move him into defence, another when he was delisted after 3 fairly ordinary seasons at sanfl level, and both of those were surpassed by his mother ringing 5AA and carrying on like the star turn at a teddy bear's picnic about how he was treated, even though there were suggestions he had asked to be traded to one of the WA clubs but apparently neither were interested.

I try not to read too much into players reactions to getting drafted to us because you always get the overly enthusiastic everything is awesome types and then you also get the guys that are little more reserved and play it cool (albeit this seems to be rarer these days). But I think most of them would react the same to whoever they got drafted to.

However, there have been the odd draftee that looks genuinely shattered like a tanner bruhn and Fischer mcasey but they are rare.

Hawthorn tried to get him as an nga for his Brazilian heritage but he didn't qualify.

We really drafted some kids who seem genuinely nice and excited to be at the club. They should add some enthusiasm to the pre season.
We traded up for Berry so he knows he was our target.
Whitlock was overlooked by everyone and is out to prove them wrong.
Moraes was down on his performance in 2024 and got picked up after his most likely club fell through and he was probably getting a little worried about getting drafted at all.

Couldn't have scripted it better to get 3 boys wanting to get everything out of themselves and pay back the faith.

But Egypt .........

Great Job Reaction GIF

I honestly don’t give rankings a great deal of substance.
I see them more as a guide than a true reflection on how a player will end up.
Looking at those numbers overall we did pretty good.
Then again as the saying goes, time will tell.

He is such an enthusiastic young chap. Speaks well ... not just words too, its from the heart. The type of charismatic personality that has future leadership written all over him.

That comment about how he loves the fan base, says a hell of a lot about him too. The fans will return that to him in spades if he continues his trajectory.
