Selection: Chad's back

Chad Cornes has been named to face the Demons

The Power is likely to make just one change to the team that defeated Brisbane by 48 points last Saturday, with Chad Cornes coming into the 22 in place of the suspended Troy Chaplin.

The Power welcomes back Cornes after five weeks on the sidelines following knee surgery.

Also added to the extended bench in the squad of 25 are Matthew Broadbent, Michael Pettigrew and Matthew Westhoff. Broadbent, 18, would make his AFL debut if selected.

Port Adelaide Football Operations Manager Peter Rohde says regaining Cornes is a timely boost.

“Having Chad back is obviously great for us. He provides flexibility and on-field leadership, and he’ll definitely play if he gets through training tomorrow,” Rohde said.

“We think there are unlikely to be any other changes, though Broadbent, Pettigrew and Matt Westhoff all give us different options to consider.”

The Power will hold their final training session at 11am tomorrow at Alberton, with the final team to take on the Demons named tomorrow afternoon.

The Power squad to face Melbourne, as named at 4.30pm on Thursday, is as follows:

B: Alipate Carlile, Toby Thurstans, Jacob Surjan
HB:Nathan Krakouer, Chad Cornes, Peter Burgoyne
C: Danny Meyer, Dom Cassisi, Tom Logan
HF: Robert Gray, Warren Tredrea, David Rodan
F: Brett Ebert, Brendon Lade, Justin Westhoff
R: Dean Brogan, Kane Cornes, Danyle Pearce
Interchange from: Josh Carr, Jason Davenport, Steven Salopek, Paul Stewart, Michael Pettigrew, Matthew Broadbent, Matthew Westhoff

IN: Broadbent, C. Cornes, Pettigrew, M. Westhoff
OUT: Troy Chaplin (suspended)

Surprised to see meyer hold his spot in the starting 18. Very happy to see chad back, i'm sure a few people would be glad to see him named at chb, although i doubt he'll play there unless it's in the same role chaplin played last week.

Chad @ CHB = Epic Win.

Still think we will lose this game. In the most even season I can remember Melbourne at the G are no easy beats.

Negativity guys. :(

I hope we win, but I just don't think we'll WIIIIIIIN like I want. I'm never going to travel interstate to watch them again if they don't win this week. Seriously, this is THE game imo. If we win, it would not only raise the numbers on the ladder, but raise the confidence heading into the final weeks now, we have a pretty good chance of making the final 8, it's just a matter of not letting games like this go to waste. So imo, this game is pretty crucial.

Looks like a straight swap for those two and thats it.
Chaplin backline, Chad midfield.

In: Pettigrew, Chad
Out Chplin, ??? (Meyer or Stewart)

Looks like Petters and Broadbent might have to wait another week, if Meyer, Logan or Thurstans were on the extended bench they'd be under threat but you'd think all of Carr, Dav, Sal and Stewart played well enough last week to be safe. Also, Salter is a far better player than M. Westhoff and should be in the side well ahead of him.

With Melbourne's plethora of medium forwards, I thought Pettigrew was a sure thing. Doesn't look like it based on that team.

what concerns me is that...by this time of the season we dont really have a settled side...

i mean some people see this as a positive but i would rather see a solid side with shape..

i mean all season i never think we ever have played our best team thats been available..

maybe i am just being a negative fool but its a thought i have.

but i do believe we will win this game if we can pummel the lions i just don't see us losing to Melb..(touch wood)

they would want those 2 draft picks sewn up amirite??:(

I really hope we can play like we did last week. I've had a few ppl tell me they'll be there for the game against West Coast if they can string 2 games like that together.

I don't know who is more worried about dropping this game. Port supporters or us Dees supporters!

Fair dinkum your finals chances are on the line this week. Port should be coming to play. If you drop this one, they should not re-appoint Williams.

If we (Demons) produce the same game as we did last week. You guys are going to get hammered.

I hope you come to play, because we want Scully.

Interesting. I actually think we're actually trying to settle the side now. I'm becoming more convinced that there won't be anymore players introduced for the rest of the year.

Given meyer had been average the last 2 weeks, i would've thought that this would be the ideal game to debut broadbent. Instead, we seem to have stuck with our most experienced players available and dropped only 1 one experienced player for the last 2 weeks. First it was sal, then it was pettigrew. I believe stewart deserves to keep his spot, but if we truly are trying to play our best team possible then I think it's likely that pettigrew will come in at stewart's expense. Pettigrew is the more experienced, played well in the SANFL last weekend and would have more brownie points than stewart imo.

This will leave us with our most experienced and mature 22 possible. Even though Meyer only has 20 games and davenport 4, they've been around for a few years and are more physically developed than other players of similar experience, excluding lower of course. On lower, this would also mean that his time at the club is likely coming to an end as he has scarcely been an emergency or been in the team this year. Both Meyer and Davenport are ahead of lower in their first year at the club.

I think from here on in the only "ins" into the team will be junior burger, mots, boak and hartlett. Thomas will be borderline depending on player availability - unless he replaces krakouer or logan (if we had a full list available).

I agree, our team needs to be settled in this time of the season, but injuries has hurt has somewhat, which leads to me to think that our depth is just not up to standard. Having said that, our youngsters are performing well which is making our depth grow with every game they play.

Just imagine if the current side that is playing now winning matches with the talent of players on the sidelines that are returning from injuries not able to get a game is depth I like to see.

I think we can win comfortably but I aint convinced, if our skills are better than they were against the Lions, then it will be easy. I just dont want our side to come down to thier level.

I really hope we can play like we did last week. I've had a few ppl tell me they'll be there for the game against West Coast if they can string 2 games like that together.

I will be there, + 3, my family.

Forza while i kinda agree with you...but

with exception of injuries we have had people coming going out coming back again etc etc...

can you sit there and honestly give us a 22 that you will be 100% confident will play every week from here on in and hold down that spot (barring injuries of course).

I just hope Lower respects that Davenport and Meyer must be given the chance atm because of their age and where they are at in their careers, hope he sticks around to get into the team.

This is going to be hard fought win by ours boys, I hope. I think Melbourne are playing for a man that is going to make it very hard for us which is going to test our mindset to overcome persistant teams that will have the attitude of "never say die".

I hope that our side come out and respect you from the first bounce.

Every game for us from this point on is a must win game to be sure that we make the 8, and to help us this week, we need these teams to help us.

Richmond to defeat Carton
Sydney to defeat Essendon
Geelong to defeat Brisbane
Freo to defeat Crows
North to defeat Hawthorn
Bulldogs to defeat Collingwoon
Saints to defeat Eagles.

I think Richmond, North and Freo can come out with a win.

If you look at our list, you'll see it's very easy to find 22 players worthy of playing every week and hold on to their spots. There'll always be arguments about who's best 22 and who's 23-25.

When i said there won't be anymore players introduced this year, i meant it literally. I'm starting to believe that stewart will be the 33rd and last player used on our list this year.

To give you an idea of what I'm thinking we are working towards, my best 22 barring injury (and terrible form) would look something like this:

F: Brett Ebert - Justin Westhoff - Daniel Motlop
HF: Robbie Gray - Warren Tredrea - David Rodan
C: Shaun Burgoyne - Domenic Cassisi - Chad Cornes
HB: Hamish Hartlett - Troy Chaplin - Peter Burgoyne
B: Michael Pettigrew - Alipate Carlile - Jacob Surjan
R: Dean Brogan - Kane Cornes - Danyle Pearce

Int: Brendon Lade - Steven Salopek - Travis Boak - Nathan Krakouer

Emg: Toby Thurstans - Josh Carr - Tom Logan or Matt Thomas

Obviously, it's not likely we'll have a full list to choose from but if you look at this 22 and our current 22 i'd say our depth is actually better than we give it credit for. Now this is just an example, maybe other people on this board believe carr, logan and thomas should hold a spot in the 22. The overall point i'm trying to make is that i believe we're building to this.

Forza, while i see your point.

The names you mentioned in that whole team...could play or be dropped anytime and any given game, its not a solid shaped 22 that we will be used to seeing week in and out, and i still dont know the answers to some questions...

What exactly is our best back 6?

- Does it contain Toby, Pettigrew, Stewart ?
- Is chappy our true CHB?

- What is our best midfield?

- Matt Thomas?
- Robbie grey?
- Chad Cornes?
- Salopek?

- Development of youngsters?

- are we developing them in constsint occasion or do we drop them when a senior comes back?
- do some of our senior deserved to be picked over some of our young talent?

We can all come up with our opinionated answers to these questions niether which a right or wrong..but its the consistency of that group playing week in and out and what is their role/position exactly, every week...
