Autopsy Post-match Port Adelaide vs Fremantle Positives and Negatives

Positives - Defensive work was back close to its best for 3/4's.. Fyfe is beyond a jet.. Silvagni is incredibly handy to have on our list, Z.Clarke is growing into a AFL standard 2nd tall forward. Losing to close to the best team in the comp right now by 3 goals on their deck.. decent effort really when you take emotions out of it.

Negatives - Sandilands.. worst game for a few years for mine, no physicality at all when he played a woeful ruckman for 3/4's and two non ruckman for the last.. Ballantyne's GF fumbling returned.. pretty common theme of too much work left to the usual suspects and half the side getting dragged along for the ride.

Duffield had a very average game. 3 out on the full in the defensive 50, missed tackles. I was disappointed with what he produced today.

Negative - it appears the Saints 09 H&A domination I was hoping for this year isn't going to eventuate

Positive - that doesn't mean we aren't a contender this year. After next week we would have played every single top 10 team and zero bottom 8 teams. I still expect us to go on a streak in the 2nd half of the year and lift ourselves into the top 4 when we do get to play those teams.

Losing to the other contenders isn't ideal, but better to lose to them now than during the finals. If we can capitalise on our 'easy draw' in the 2nd half of the year (no doubt that's what it will be called by people who forget how hard our first half of the year was) and get some momentum going then we're every chance to knock off the likes of Port or Geelong come September. We weren't looking like grand finalists this time last season either. Peaking when it matters is what really matters.

Lyon summed it up pretty well..."we're a mediocre side at the moment"

The good news is that we know our best can beat anyone, and we're only a 3rd of the way through the season. Whether we can get back to it is another matter.

Clarke kicking multiple goals in consecutive weeks is a good sign, too bad he had no support other than Fyfe goal wise.

Speaking of which, Fyfe. Felt like he was the reason we were even in it at all today. Clearly our best player now and by some margin.

Mzungu, Sutty and MDB were the best of the role players, Spurr I hate to say is having a really bad season but we have nobody to replace him with. Suban good first half, invisible second half.

One last negative, Clancee Pearce is not sub material. Both Crozier and Clancee would have had much better games had their positions been reversed.

Negatives - 2 more six day breaks and one five day break to contend with.

Our next 6 day break comes up before we play Richmond at the G (surprise surprise) another against St Kilda and our five day break comes against Port in the last round.

It's their way of punishing us for being allowed to have a home fixture in final round of the season.

round 23 fixtures has not been worked out yet but doubt we will get a 5 day break. Back to back 6 day breaks followed by a 9 day break is Shit house.

To be fair to Vlad, at least he didn't give us that 5 day break after the longest road trip in the AFL. Oh wait...

I hope he chokes on his golden handshake.

I thought it was a floating fixture too but it's listed on our website as a Friday night game.

edit - just noticed the time is listed as 12am, so it might be a generic listing subject to further arrangements

Ballantyne is the ultimate light-switch. It happened all last year; he'd kick 5 goals, then go quiet, then get suspended, then come off his suspension with a point to prove so he kicks another 4 goals then goes quiet again.

Walters on the other hand kicked 2-4 goals just about every single game he played.

Just looking at the players side of things:

Pos:
- Clarke getting into form and hitting the scoreboard

Neg:
- Pav unable to hit the scoreboard

Pos:
- Mayne improving a bit more yet again

Neg:
- Mayne still not hitting the scoreboard enough

Pos:
- SCOS really impressive especially given the amount of pressure the back half was under

Neg:
- Duff and Spurr (tough ask to take Wingard though) struggling at times down back. MJ having the odd brain fade too.

Big Negative:
- Hill Injury:( It better be minor or I might go all Incredible Hulk on this town.

I don't reckon Freo fans should be too downcast right now. Nobody has taken it up to Port at Adelaide Oval like your boys did today, so they deserve a lot of credit.

If Fyfe wants to move to Port, I wouldn't say no: the bloke is a gun!!!

Positives...

-Zac Clarke was good again with another 3 goals.
-Fyfe stood well in the forward line and in the middle.
-Johnson always reliable in defence.

Negatives...
-Mayne is out of form.
-Pav was shut down
-Wingard was let off the leash in the final quarter.

I think we will, the signs were there the last couple of weeks. We, for the most part, played better today than we have the last few weeks, and I reckon we were better last week than the one before. We're tracking in the right direction, and you can see that top quality pressure football just bubbling under the surface, it's whether we get it back in time before top 4 is totally shut out from us.

We're nearly at that point, but it's going to be really tight amongst the top 2/3 of the table so a reasonable % and maybe 15, even 14 wins, might sneak you into the top 4.

One thing he won't do is take any responsibility for selection errors.

Rubbish.

Firslty, I think he would - if there was a glaring error to be had. He's admitted to selection/personnel errors before (e.g. playing Mayne in Sydney).

Secondly, who exactly would have come in and won that game for us today?

Not a positive or negative but of the last 12 derbies Fremantle have played away the next week 10 times. We won 4 of those but 3 of them were against bottom teams and the other was against Carlton at Cararra. We play away again after the next derby but at least we get a 7 day break. Surprisingly the 2 games we played at home we lost, although they were against top teams.
