Play Nice Post sanction: Taylor Walker publically apologises for his racial slur

Look, it is a good apology, and it seems to have been taken as genuine given that Young was willing to appear in the apology video.

But I really hope that people take notice of what a lot of other Aboriginal people are saying about this - that it's not an isolated one-off issue, it's something they see, hear, and feel on a regular basis.

Let me guess your a Hird apologist right?

I made that post before any evidence had been presented other than conversation about what may have been said.
Now I believe Walker is guilty, because that's how my brain works.

This type of language/comment from Taylor Walker is utterly abhorrent and reprehensible. On so many levels. Some of the partial defending of this as a 'mistake' and 'just a couple of words' on this forum is beyond me. I cannot imagine how guys like Andrew McLeod and Eddie Betts feel right now. All the work and effort they've put in to break down racial barriers and stereotypes has just seemingly gone completely backwards.

How can Taylor Walker even look them in the eye ?

This type of language and thinking from Walker shows just how far we still need to get in terms of education and mindset on this issue.
For a second we thought we may have made some progress on the matter than ugly incidents like this arise and we realise that we have so much more work to do.

This guy is a veteran and former leader of the club? And he thought this was ok? I cant' even......

He's so so lucky he wasn't sacked and put out to pasture.

That's a statement, not a view.

Tex's statement is indefensible and he has rightly drawn censure for it. He's expressed remorse, demonstrated insight into why it was wrong (as opposed to saying 'sorry if anyone took offence'), and is justifiably mortified.

My point is, you - and most others, have absolutely no idea what his actual view on race is. He could be a rabid racist pig, or he could be someone who's has made a very stupid and regrettable mistake like all humans do at some point in their life.

Why are you trying to justify his actions?

He made a racial remark, thought he could get away with it and was caught

F##k him

Agreed, wait for the evidence and/or admissions before pointing the finger. I like to think I’m just being fair. Lefties gonna left I suppose.

Sorry what? "Tex's statement is indefensible and he has rightly drawn censure for it"...

How am I justifying his actions?

My question was, what insight do you have into his views on race?

I am probably a left leaning person if anything. I believe that regardless of your political affiliation you should be able to look at evidence before making an assessment on anything. The world right now is so hyperbolic and emotional that it seems the media is uninterested in presenting facts and letting people choose how they feel about those facts.

I am glad that this evidence has come out, and that Walker has been punished.
So unfortunate that words like what he muttered are said publicly.

So if we boo "Tex" in the future for being a racist does this counter balance the booing of others players in the past who accused fans of being racist.
One for the philosophers.

Yeah but if he turned a blind eye and it still got out, he gets sacked in all likelihood. Tough spot to be in, made the right call.

Crouch (apparently) turned a blind eye to it. Is he being sacked?

I agree that it's courageous. I assumed that for the Crows to really push through with this, it must have been several Crows people all digging their heels in and saying that if they didn't take action, it'd be front page of the paper the next day. For one person to stick to his or her guns, when it would have been easy to play the "you must have misheard" defence is well done.

Six weeks? Somehow I feel that it's factored in that we're in August, rather than April, and I'm not sure it should have.

There's really no excuse and I don't think anything Walker said or could say would convince most people. So he's right on that front: show your teammates, opponents, the AFL and the public that you're better than that when you get back. What do his teammates, particularly his Indigenous teammates think of his actions?

He's had a good career, but if it were to end today, sorry to say, but he'd be remembered for:
  • Being the captain who presided over the power stance
  • Being the captain who presided over the infamous 2017-18 preseason camp
  • And this.
If he's uncomfortable with that legacy, he'd want to do something to change it, pronto.

It's no surprise McLeod and Betts want nothing to do with the club.

Care to comment on your own ingrained racism there bud?

You belong in the Bay.
Fair to say this lad is probably not the sharpest tool in the shed and has made a complete dick of himself with his comments on this thread in his desperate attempts to troll for attention..

probably best to just ignore him.. feeding him just makes things worse..

Let's be honest, anyone surprised one bit that Tex is a racist pig? The bloke is a true redneck bogan with a brain the size of a walnut.

This w***er was front and centre with all the racism crap that Betts copped throughout his career at Adelaide. You'd think he would have seen the toll it had taken on Betts and his family, and learn and educate himself around this issues. Imagine how Betts would be feeling.

Culture at the club is toxic ad it comes. The sooner the likes of Walker, Sloane, Riccuito are gone from that club the better.

Watch some of the media paint him as the victim. I see his boys club bestie in Bernie Vince has already started that..

**** Tex.

I'm pretty shocked he hasn't been sacked. I'm all for reform but he's in the twilight of his career.

Adelaide just can't take a trick these days it seems. Tough position for them to be in but I just wonder if sacking him would have sent the stronger message. Seems weak as a club to let him off.

Probably not. Speaks to the lenience offered in the past. Not the justice of the present.

Does the AFL just give a lifetime ban to anyone making a racist comment?

Does the victim get a say? What if they dont want a lifetimr ban?

Do you not think the current structure of ban, financial penalty, apology, and education has in a large way been structured by players who have been abused having a say?

Do any other penalties for offences other than vilification include apologies and education ?
