Play Nice Post sanction: Taylor Walker publically apologises for his racial slur

Remove this Banner Ad

Look, it is a good apology, and it seems to have been taken as genuine given that Young was willing to appear in the apology video.

But I really hope that people take notice of what a lot of other Aboriginal people are saying about this - that it's not an isolated one-off issue, it's something they see, hear, and feel on a regular basis.

If you overheard your child or nephew or niece or cousin make a racist remark to someone, would you dob them in to the club’s management and have them punished? Or would you admonish them privately, educate them and not punish them with public humiliation that lasts a lifetime?

Maybe that’s just me…?

If I overheard a child I’d talk to their parents.

If I overheard a colleague I’d pass it up the line, so management can deal with it (which is what happened here)

Tex isn’t a child so I don’t understand the analogy it’s a workplace.

Dob him in to the club, who were then left with no choice but to make this public and sanction Walker. Walker, who made a very poor mistake, is humiliated with reputation permanently tarnished. The Adelaide FC is dragged through the mud, losing sponsors, supporters and members. Adelaide supporters are embarrassed by their club because of the actions of one person…. The entire playing list is tarnished etc…

BigFooty.com

I don’t think they are tarnished, they have said, even between our own walls this isn’t acceptable. If you are a supporter and turning your back on the club because they reported and held a senior player to account for racism, then I don’t think you are a supporter the club or AFL want at the ground.

As for the players, they haven’t done anything, they can come out individually and condemn racism now if they feel they are tarnished, they can also condemn the action without condemning the person.

Will opposition supporters use it on social media and places like this to tarnish the supporters clubs and players? Absolutely same as they do for Eddies comments to Collingwood supporters, the Port supporters due to their own supporter & what every Carlton supporter gets over salary cap breaches. It’s annoying, but if you are allowing that to effect you that much then you need to step away.

Racism and the stance Adelaide have taken is far more important than a few uncomfortable social media and bigfooty posts from opposition fans

I don't think you can have such a disparity between how you handle fans who are much less educated and players who are educated on a daily basis. I would personally have players suspended for a full season.

Education is all well and good but what more can they provide Tex in extra educational classes that he hasn't received in the 15 years he's likely been educated, he played alongside Eddie Betts for christ's sake.

So the police should investigate every violent hit? You know, cos Im pretty sure they do with crowd violence.

Have the players who have been vilified said they want 1 year penalties? If not, shouldnt they have a say? Or do we leave it to the internet white knights to dictate?

We are racist because of something amended 54 years ago by all states in the highest Yes vote out of any referendum in our history...

BTW: you dont think Australia should have a say on who emigrates here? I mean this has absolutely zero to do with what Tex did on the weekend but that is just a bizarre thing to say.
Yes racists need to have a say

As I posted elsewhere while the amount of weeks seems on face value a big punishment that it’s all relative

6 weeks to a team fighting for a spot, like say Sydney, would be infinitely more harsh than 6 weeks for a player who was already out of finals and this suspension could likely improve adelaides draft position. Something crow fans have been calling for the club to do for months.

If the afl cared about more than appearances they would consider this.

Please. Can you show me where in the tribunal guidelines or any other document it states that punishment should reflect the team's position on the ladder?

Your bias is showing.

The upside is that it hopefully torpedoes any media opportunities he has lined up as an annointed “larrikin” in the boys club. One less bozo doing the lowest common denominator clown act.

It's a subjective opinion, not another reason to turn another thread into a Port v Crows crap fight.

You seem really keen to defend Walkers actions in this thread

You'd have to be pretty dim to draw that conclusion.

At no point have I defended Walker.

Pointing out how ludicrous it is that a word can cost you $20,000 but physically punching someone was worth $125 is simply pointing out what a warped society we live in.

Perhaps if they started handing out 20k fines for physically hitting someone it might lessen people's willingness to do that.

Because public opinion isn’t bound by the presumption of innocence. Nor should it be.

fair point.

mine was just more around some people not jumping to the conclusion and hanging him to dry in the case he didn’t say anything and it was proved wrong. We’ve all seen things explode online and be proven wrong, and the spotlight never seems to shine on that side of it.

anyways, he said it, he’s an idiot & hopefully he, and a lot of other people judging by this thread, learn a bit from it

Let's be honest, anyone surprised one bit that Tex is a racist pig? The bloke is a true redneck bogan with a brain the size of a walnut.

This w***er was front and centre with all the racism crap that Betts copped throughout his career at Adelaide. You'd think he would have seen the toll it had taken on Betts and his family, and learn and educate himself around this issues. Imagine how Betts would be feeling.

Culture at the club is toxic ad it comes. The sooner the likes of Walker, Sloane, Riccuito are gone from that club the better.

Watch some of the media paint him as the victim. I see his boys club bestie in Bernie Vince has already started that..

fu** Tex.
Do you know what he actually said?

You're talking about two completely different things. If you're suggesting police should investigate every violent hit (as in even those that happen on a football ground between two players) then I don't have a say either way in that argument, but that isn't what has happened here.

When you go to the football, you are a spectator. Victims of racial abuse should have the exact same input on these things regardless of if the remarks were made by a fan or a player. There are numerous cases of spectators being banned for 1-2 years from attending any games because of making racist remarks towards players.

Tex wasn't playing in the SANFL game. He was a spectator and made a racist remark. Why is he treated so differently to a fan?

Seems fair.

Obviously everyone calling him a pig are perfect humans.

Massive side-eye to this sort of dishonest rhetoric.

Reminds me of all the “I’m sure the victim was no angel” stuff people post in response to every instance of police brutality.

So he gets zero fine and zero weeks and is just banned from attending SANFL games for a year? He would probably accept that.

BTW: https://www.afl.com.au/news/563080/afl-releases-update-to-afl-vilification-rule-rule-35

This has a LOT of info on how the policy was put together, how it was updated, who was involved, and what the major findings were.

What was the remark?

But whatabout *insert a completely different example of a miscarriage of justice here to distract and relativise the issue actually being discussed*?
Whatabout-isms are about as useful as the posters using this anecdotal example to reaffirm their own subjective worldview and beliefs.

Both detract from the real issue at hand and leads to unnecessary shit-fights and generalisations (stereotypes).

Taylor issued racist remarks, the club reported it and Taylor was rightfully punished with a heavy emphasis on learning and reconciliation.

For those interested in the governing philosophy behind reporting, the Crows RAP provides the framework for actions. In this instance, I would assume the protocols would involve mandatory reporting by employees to the club. I think that the Adelaide reporting offical, once aware of what had happened, had an obligation set by the club to report it. I have had a fair bit to do with preparing RAPs and the disclosure of such actions is a critical part of organisations having an honest relationship with themselves.

If anyone is within a position of influence within their own organisation (Chief), I would encourage you to consider looking into a RAP.

That is what education is for. I’mcomfortable enough to give him the benefit of the doubt-and he’ll learn.

What more "education" does he need? Don't call someone a black campaigner, ok, got it ✅

Do you think that maybe he's been told that in the current AFL climate maybe once or twice in the past decade? Maybe when Betts was public with his abuse received?

It was a remark made that was deemed racist enough that one of his teammates reported it to the club.

It doesn't matter what was said.
What if Young had no problem with what Tex said? I guess someone being offended on someone elses behalf is good enough for the permanently outraged.

I disagree with this take. This official had a choice. Take Walker aside and admonish him for what was said and make it clear it’s not acceptable. Educate him privately.

Or….

Everybody makes mistakes. He’s an ex club captain. He said something privately that was inappropriate …. he’s not Robinson Crusoe there …football clubs are supposed to be ‘families’ …

If you overheard your child or nephew or niece or cousin make a racist remark to someone, would you dob them in to the club’s management and have them punished? Or would you admonish them privately, educate them and not punish them with public humiliation that lasts a lifetime?

This "educate him" shit is nonsense, you get that right?

He's been in the AFL system for a decade plus and we still claim he needs "education"? Really? Do you not see that it's more than a little bit ridiculous to claim he needs education when racism in sport has been a huge talking point for a major part of his career? It didn't stop him then, what more would "educate him in private" actually achieve?

"Heyy Taylor, remember how Eddie Betts and co got racially abused and it was a hot topic on multiple occasions, don't do that"

"oh um yeah gee thanks, can't believe this is the first time I'm hearing about it"
