Two great stories capped off tonight with All Australian selection

Many people considered McGovern to be past his prime and unable to stay on the park consistently after playing just 46 of a possible 85 games from 2020-23. Came back to preseason in great shape and returned to his absolute best. Missed 4 games - 3 after getting a rib injury and punctured lung against Melbourne which required him to drive home as he wasn’t cleared to fly. Then missed the last game due to a thumb injury

His selection was thoroughly deserved

Waterman is an even better story. Spent 7 years in our list fighting for a spot as a 3rd tall/high half forward/backup ruck even - unable to play his preferred position as a KPF stuck behind the likes of Kennedy, Darling and Allen. Then last year he was struck down by a stomach illness that threatened to end his career. Lost 10+ kilos as a result but worked his arse off and presented back at the start of preseason in the best shape of his career. An injury to Oscar Allen finally gave Waterman the opportunity to play as a leading forward which he literally grabbed with both hands - 53 goals later and he’s an AA forward

Finished 5th in the Coleman but only Hogan averaged more goals per game so his selection whilst a surprise, was deserved

Great story that should be a source of inspiration for his teammates

Gawn has more All Australians than Dean Cox now and yet not close to the player cox was

Following in the footsteps of Selwood and Pendlebury, where they only had to play 15 games good or bad to get a blazer.

Yep and reckon in 2021 he was lucky to get a bench spot when Nic was by far the best ruck and many rucks in previous years having far better years and still being snubbed from a bench spot as they elected to go with one ruck only. I’m actually waiting for him to retire just to hear the Cox v Gawn debate to be brought up.

Cox had a bit more competition back in the day

Tonight in his acceptance…Gawn was rattling off who he was up against back for his first one and followed it up with Tristan Xerri, Darcy Cameron and Rowan Marshall. All good rucks but….ya know….

It’s not exactly the golden age of rucking at the moment.

Don’t rate Nic Nat, Goldstein, Grundy, Darcy, English, Marshall, Ryder,Witts, Mumford and Bailey Williams?
Goldstein was always good, but not quite the peaks of the others imo. Goldy only 1 AA sounds about right
NicNat had his issues, and still won a few AAs anyway.
Grundys been missing for a while, was really only up there in the mix 2018-2020 imo
Darcy always injured
English Lol no
Ryder, Witts, Mumford nah, solid but not elite
Bailey Williams you have a good point actually

The rest all similar stories, not the level of Cox and Sandilands imo

Odds at start of year for Waterman for AA. 100/1?

$501 seems to be the price a lot of betting agencies put as the cap-out least likely odds for various things and I think he'd genuinely fit there. Coming off his hospitalisation, with our team's projected performance for the year and his fringe status with our relative supply of key forwards seemingly ahead of him (Allen and Darling would have been picked ahead of him start of the year with Flynn/BWilliams a likely third tall, JWilliams and Maric in many eyes competing for the same spot) - he'd honestly be 100-1 to even kick 40 goals.

Such an awesome season from him and one of those players who'll hopefully push our culture up as well as performance. Has to be leadership group next year surely.

Ollie Dempsey wins the Rising Bradbury Award

Reckon McKercher or Windsor should’ve got it personally
Dempsey purely on form has been much better than those two. Depends how much you tax him for being two years older tho.

Mrs is going to flip having to find wardrobe space for anotherone of these ugly ****ing jackets.

I think I heard somewhere that they only get one jacket - just keep the first one they win and roll that out each year rather than get a new one each time

Might have been Gov on the coast to coast pod. Remember being surprised by it
