"This is a fascinating story unfolding"

He says this all the time but for some complete nothing. Like Joe Bloggs fringe player might move from a wing to half back or something completely innocuous.

He also starts every sentence by referring to the person who handed it over to him.

"Yeah Jase..."

"Yeah Hutchy..."

"Yeah Lloydy..."

Shut up Damian.

That was all about the number of goals being kicked, TV rights and ad breaks. Not much has changed except they keep changing the rules to try to increase scoring. It's all about the money, money..
And hilariously enough, scoring has only gone down since all their rule changes

**** off the interchange caps

The theory was that tired players would defend less. Of course tired players also attack less so maybe it cancels itself out. 666 works a bit, stand and deliver works a bit but coaches figure out how to defend against new rules.
If they REALLY want to increase scoring:
1) Reduce player numbers on field from 18 to 15.
2) 555 at centre bounce. Ruck plus 2 mids in the circle.
3) At least 2 forwards must remain inside the 50 at all times.
4) Increase the width of the goals.
5) Umps actually enforce disposal rules.
More free kicks -> more open game.
Umps may need to.wear helmets.
Reduces list sizes.
What's not to like?

All of these imo

Enforcing the rules is the best one

I am a big believer in AFL being a game where attrition is a key ingredient in our sport. Players need to get tired so that players with either
a) better ability, or
b) superior fitness, or
c) both
have more freedom to play the game.
You need to wear down your immediate opponent. As Nick Reiwoldt used to do he would run them 100m down field and turn around and run them 100m upfield. Just to lose them as an opponent and tire them out so when the ball came his way they were knackered. With unlimited interchange coaches just put a fresh athlete on these greats in our game and their ability is nullified by fresh legs. Takes away from the character of the game IMO.

You should have to measure up to your opponent and use all your footy nous and fitness to defeat them.

More interchange encourages athletes. Less interchange encourages footballers.

I completely disagree

Less interchanges require people to run more. Thus athletes as they need to run out a game as opposed to footballers with actual skills. You can kick the ball further and faster than anyone can run. Better to have those types of skills of someone who has good and athletic fitness over those with "marathon" level elite fitness.

Reiwoldt was unique and had both. Scoring has done down ever since IC caps became a thing because coaches are more worried about seeing a game out and being having athletes, not footballers

I knew you would reply as I knew we have opposite opinions on interchange.
Your reply does not make any sense to me.
You don't need marathon levels of fitness when your football abilities can deliver the ball there without you attached to it.

That is usually how conversations and discussions work...

And your last line cements what I am trying to say. Football abilities such as kicking, marking, winning contested ball, set shots etc are what makes our game unique and wonderful. If you have those skills you don't need to be able to run 20km in 3 hours. If we continue to lower the interchange cap, coaches will draft someone with more elite marathon running abilities over natural footballers because they want to run the game out. If you can only make 75 changes a game, you'll draft someone who only needs 2 breaks as opposed to someone who needs 6 even if you'll get more quality disposal out of the latter.

Also, if you are more tired from having to exhaust yourself more from less interchanges your skills and decision making will also deteriorate.

Less interchange would require people to kick more. Isn't that our game. To kick. You want more run and that is dumb. Kick mark is our game. Better kickers = better skills. What do we do at AUSKICK? We kick to each other. Maybe AUSKICK can be changed to be a marathon club.

The game isn't kicking anymore and that is my issue. The game is stoppage, run, stoppage, try to break away from the pack, stoppage, run.

Because the footskills aren't there because there is too much of a focus on athletic ability over skills

And I believe the interchange cap plays a roll in that

So this is not AFL it is touch football. We should discourage kicking. Is that what you are saying?

NO.

That is literally the opposite of what I am saying...

Let me try this 1 more time. Flow chart style

Lower interchange caps -> Stronger runners prioritized over players with better footskills -> Less scoring due to less skills -> Quality of matches declining

That is my opinion and belief based on what is happening.

Lower interchange = players with better skills prioritized over better athletes = more one on one footy = better spectacle for fans

My belief on the changes that were made last year which DID result in better watchable games.

If you lower the cap they will draft the exact opposite. they will draft players that can kick. That is the flaw in your argument.

I respectfully disagree and suggest we move on from this discussion as it will get us no where

But you're wrong ;)

Look Milky. I like your posts. I really do. But this is something I am passionate about. I saw interchange totally destroy another sport.
I am never malicious. I speak my mind.
I respect your opinion too.
