On another note, it has come to my attention that the word "verbally" is being used as a synonym for "orally" and in contradistinction to "in writing". E.g. The applicant should have good communication skills verbally and in writing. To me, this is wrong and mildly repugnant. I've always thought that "verbal" means related to words whether spoken or written.

1. Has anyone else come across this?
2. Does anyone else have any thoughts or feelings on the topic?
My thoughts are, if you have stated they have good communication skills, there is no need to define if that is via spoken or written communication. The only time you need clarity would be if they are good communicators in one mode and not the other.

Sorry killablood & Tedeski .

I wasn't sure whether to issue an apology or not. But since I have hurt feelings and that was something I consciously risked doing even though it was not the outcome I wanted, I do apologise. I was kind of being light-hearted but kind of not too. I got carried away and made it more personal than I should have. It's not usually my style to be offensive. The large majority of the time I focus on being positive and bringing good energy and I was focused on that in this instance too but regrettably at your expense. Appreciate your generous replies.
Thanks Callipygian. Unexpected and somewhat unnecessary but greatly appreciated all the same.
Perhaps the offence I took confirms your original thoughts 😂.

Have had it confirmed from a source within the Swans.

Whilst players are encouraged to limit reading online forums, most definitely read Big Footy. And they read it almost daily.

If only Longmire got his coaching tips on BF lol.

Actually I think there may be something in drawing the distinction (though leaving aside verbally vs orally) that has merit. Both my kids interview people for jobs and have encountered applications that have clearly been tarted up by AI or similar and indicate communication skills the applicant doesn't have in real time.

Yes. And that’s where stating the particular communication method they excel with is needed to be defined. Whereas if they are highly competent with many forms, definition can be shelved. That being said, I have learnt not to assume anything in recent days with parents sending in camp medication with their kids and not dropping it off themselves [emoji849]

Justin McInerney - if you’re reading this, grow the mullet back!!!

It was your superpower.

Whilst perusing the player threads, I noticed Will Edwards & Caleb Mitchell have gone the longest without their player threads being bumped. Gotta go back to October of last year for Mitchell, and even further back for Edwards - May of last year. That is probably a good thing if you're a senior player in the 22 every week, but I think if you're a depth player in the VFL it suggests you're maybe not moving the needle enough.

Edwards got off to a good start in the reserves last week, and Mitchell was a travelling emergency last week. So hopefully they can take steps forward this year.

I think Edwards has had a fair bit of discussion in the draft/trade, Season 2025 and VFL thread as someone coming through. Probably also a realisation that he's just going to take time. Maybe low expectations on a Cat B pick for some too.

Mitchell you'd probably have hoped to be showing some particular set of skills so far in VFL at least, as a pick in the 40s who wasn't really talked about as a project player. I don't really know where he should play, and not sure the club does either, which is concerning. Anyway, he has a year, so not writing him off.

Whys that?

Looked a natural fit on the wing but not limited to it

He's been played there, but doesn't seem to have any particular traits that stand out. He's just been pretty solid in most games.

He's got a year, but we'd probably want to see the makings of an AFL level player or I think he'll be on his way.

Humm so what qualifies as a trait, or why standing out with something in particular is a requirement

the club dont know what to do with him tho?
at some 'rebuilding' teams he would be playing every week

indeed did look proper solid at vfl level and hence has already debuted in the afl
No issue with disposal, solid overhead, good decision making

20 years old
emergency on the team

He was an emergency because of our injury list, we had 3 other non talls that aren't injured, one of which had just been dropped and one coming back from a drug related suspension. He is ahead of Kirk though.

He seems like he'll be a solid player at VFL level, though not always consistent. I'm just not seeing anything at the moment that will lift him into senior contention. Some players you can see signs with their speed, or elite kicking/marking, or defensive game and what they might be able to use at senior level. There's not really anything bad about him, it's just there's nothing that stands out at this point.

As I said, he has all year, but I think he'd be among the first few to consider delisting if we had to right now.

This conversation should be in the Edwards thread but his outstanding features are:

  • size
  • speed for his size
  • huge hoof

His disposal and his marking are unexceptional (without being problematic).

Are Hawthorn supporters the only ones that go through the main board thread and like every comment that is critical of the Hawks post win? Absolute and utter insufferable campaigners they are.
Yep. They’re insufferable and so obnoxiously entitled. I can’t stand their fanbase

Be fair they have been quiet for about 8 years 😂
