I thought Higgins did a lot of handy things too. Good signs.
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by his output, but he still didn't lay a tackle one of only three Saints who didn't. Phillipou & Howard being the others. Don't think we can afford a forward line with two players who don't contribute in that department...but Butler and Owens both did well there. Butler had an equal game high 9 tackles alongside Steele so he is in the right frame of mind.

We finished +28 in contested possessions which is excellent.

Our match is the only game so far with a combined score of under 100 points. Essendon only registered a solitary point in the second quarter. This is the Lyon way.

Jack Sinclair bravely put himself in the hole a couple of times.

Notice anything he did that wasn't on the broadcast? To me he was shocking, I get anxiety every time he's near a contest.
We are a better backline with him there, he allows Wilkie & Battle to do there thing while he looks after the big forward

Essendon Board are talking about the futility of a Parish / Shiel midfield pairing and the cheapness of a Merrett disposal. Grass is always greener I suppose.

They definitely have a type. Joffa's manlet fleet of smallish inside/outside mids. Parish sucked yesterday which made them look horrible.

He looks replaceable if he doesn't make a bit of a jump this season. If we grabbed McKay we'd have to reinvent him. He might hate it but he'd be an okay ruck/forward IMO. VanEs and Adams looked closer than I imagined last week too.

I think Buckley made a good point, said he needs to back in his marking more. He punches it a bit too much when the mark is an easy option.

Maybe being out of the leadership group will be good for him, he can focus on his footy.

That was bloody awful. Punching the ball back into the corridor 10 meters out as a defender would be one of the biggest acts of self sabotage you could make. He was a punch first mark second type at Port too. Plenty of times there he'd be in space and spoil instead of marking. It's like his best aspect so he over uses it. He seems to be a bit of a slow processor.

Owens is the antithesis, touches the ball and he's already decided what the action will be. He can take possession and kick without any delay. King was calling him a scrapper and a competitor but it's under selling his game.

Owens has class. Kicked a really nice goal at that difficult end. He seemed to grow in confidence as the game went on, I'm excited to see what he can do this year.

Hoping Hill coming back means we have him and Wood and opposite wings .
I think that is our ideal set-up however I can't help but think he's a scoring option while we wait for some quality forwards to return. And he's also that option to provide an aerial presence, NOT necessarily as a marking option but a defensive F50 option in the air, meaning contest aerialy to ensure the opposition's intercepting defenders don't mark and just kill the ball and create a ground contest. Scoring or creating creating a potential to score from him is the bonus in that role. Stressing it's the temp option but not too far removed from the main style Ross might be intending on a permanent basis.

He is no spud ,

They offered him a 2 year deal

My expectations aren't high bit he's a handy player to have on the list while others develop
This is a little tongue in cheek, but I keep being told Lyon gets the best out of players and will improve EVERY one on the list so surely the magic will work for an experienced AFL grade player who has also been good enough to be selected in a GF side that won a flag. Surely Ross would relish the opportunity to touch a player like Cordy with his magic wand and take his game to the next level. Surely?

Ok a lot of tongue...

Terrible conditions wind wise but we played exactly as I expect we will play certainly early in the year. Very defensive and fair enough. We aren’t going to kick more than around 10 to 12 goals in a game early in the year. Marshall was clearly best and basically rucked 100% of the game. Steele tackled well but doesn’t look that sharp. Maybe he is old enough to be over practice games. Wood was excellent. Sinclair ok. Owens very good. All the backs were great but again as all backs helped by a winning midfield. Now it’s time for the real stuff. Obviously freo deserve to be favourites but it’s nearly a 50/50 game. We need the mids to somehow break level with a better midfield and we can win.

He was a role player in a star packed young side. Ross likes guys who can go and do their role without fuss so he might have a spot. Lyon might not get the best out of all players but he gets them to play to a minimum set of standards or move on. No reason why Cordy can't make a career out of that. The thing that will keep him out is better options in the same role.

Ross Lyon and Beverage are like polar opposites. Bevo is all about novelty, freedom of expression, less focus on fitness and structure and more on individual brilliance being allowed to show. Lyon is all about fitness, discipline and taking out the variables. It would be interesting to see what Cordy works best in being a less skilled and flamboyant type.
