If he isn't signed up by the bye then it gets a little concerning.

But gut feel is both he and the club know his contract value is likely lowest it can be at the moment (I.e. if he re-signs now it is on a wage rating him as a fringe B22 mid). He's pretty likely to play R1, and he would back himself to hold his spot.

He can get a decent pay bump by playing well for the first 6 or so weeks.

The club has the cap room going forward, so better off getting him on a fair contract rather than underpaying and having him want to leave part way through.

This 100%. Club would've been offering him 2-3 years based on 2022 alone. He clearly has good management telling him that his trajectory will make him literally 100s of thousands if he keeps knuckling down and improving. I just hope when he eventually decides to sign next that it's with us.

He seems pretty settled and happy here. Provided we don’t try to lowball him or one of the Vic clubs throw stupid money at him I think a deal will eventually get done without too much fuss

Can you extend rookiees early? I remember Collingwood kept Mioheck on the Rookiee list for a number of years as it allowed them to write off $100k of his salary. Maybe we're going to do something similar?

Reading that article there's a bit of Priddis about him. Hopefully can Culley can extract the absolute best out of himself and go on to be an A grader. Whats exciting about Culley/Ginbey/Chesser/Hewett/Hough is that they all bring different attributes into the side as midfielders. Would love to most if not half of those boys earn a rising star nod this season

I've been in hospital with Mrs Beorn all night (she's on the mend).

Can someone summarise the sh#t posting of the past 24 hrs so I can keep up please.
Glad Mrs B is on the mend. May it continue.

As for the rest, best to pretend it didn't exist.

1. People are bored.
2. Bored people post any old shite.

I remember Rowan Jones being a bit of a whipping boy in the 06 Premiership year but maybe that was just my circle.

There were audible boos when he went up to receive his 2006 premiership medal.
At least at the stadium, maybe wasn't picked up on the TV broadcast.

Undeserved. RoJo wasn't the most talented, but sacrificed his game for the team. I would say the ultimate team player.

I think the reason RoJo was viewed as a whipping boy was because of some of the howlers that he missed. The one that sticks in my mind was the '06 Prelim (I think) where he had a chance to seal it from about 10 out.... and missed. Luckily we won that one

Rowan Jones..........the original Chris Masten

I remember in the 2006 grand final where there is about 30 seconds left in the last quarter and the ball is in dispute in the middle of the ground and he is closest to the ball, chasing it. And what does he do? Trip over his own feet and go to ground. How my television survived that god only knows because i disliked the guy at the best of times

I definitely wasn’t the biggest rojo fan but in the last minute he did make a vital contest when Kerr nearly gets run down and kicks it in to the middle of the ground, i didn’t notice it at the time but there was interview with kerr I heard where he highlights that instance and says that’s the sort of thing he used to do which a lot of fans dont notice.

You mean the bit where Kerr kicks the ball errantly into the middle of the ground and Jones crashes into Barry, wins the contested loose ball and dishes off a handball under pressure

That play?

The only 2 players I've audibly heard boo on a premiership dias were Karl Langdon and Chris Lewis in 1992.

Gehrig was getting booed in the last game in 1998 v Adelaide at Subi. My first time in Perth and I was shocked at the comments.

I liked Gehrig for us, particularly down back bursting forward.

He had no signs of becoming the G train beast back then, his transformation was crazy.

Staker, Masten were whipping boys for sure.

Every supporter base has their own allotment of dickheads, we're no different.

Offer him a reasonable amount, not a lowball and I'm sure he'll stay.

Contract after though...

Sure, but what does that look like now - and what could it look like in about 8-weeks from now?

Now - $250-300k plus match payments? That seems about fair (noting it kicks in from 2024 as he is still on is draft contract this year). From what we have seen it would be 2 years, or max 3 years.

But he has come back in great condition and is expected to cement a spot in the B22 very early.

If he is a solid B22 contributor by R6 then I'd say 3 years at around $400k (average AFL wage) is warranted. This probably includes match payments so is not that much higher than the 250-300+ payments

If his form is better then he could push into the $450-500k range. or maybe go with the lower figure but extend to 4 or 5 years.

Essentially what is reasonable now could well be lowball within a few weeks. So we either pay what is not yet justified, pay a lowball amount and have him want to renegotiate or leave pretty soon, or reach a mutual understanding that we will open discussions a few weeks into the season so we can both have a better view of fair value.

I'm comfortable we will get it done pre-Bye.

Nah that's not the passage I am thinking of. It must have been another final, but I am sure it was against Sydney. I will look into this and see if I can find it

Juddy gushes about RoJo and that play in the last two minutes here, time stamped for your convenience.

The Rojo part was good but I find Judd so robotic and blah to listen to in general.

Happy he was a great player for us but that's about it tbh.
