Yeah I think you are right with not many agreeing.

With JK and Rioli gone our forward line is definitely not top 6. Only Darling and Ryan are proven A graders and they aren't always conistent. Cripps is ok but he has half a season of soap handling football to get out of the way before he settles.

Our backline is actually rubbish atm. Outside of Barrass, we get pantsed most of the time in defence. It is too slow.

Darling and Allen are both top 25 KPF’s at minimum.

Geelong, Brisbane, Richmond and Carlton (?) have better forward lines. No one else has 2 a graders in there let alone a potential third in Allen.

Our backline was missing an AA KPD and our best lockdown defender last year.

I do question the ability of Barrass and McGovern to work together but

Certainly has the ability to comfortably be a top 6 backline.

Question will be whether Edwards can put on some size to lockdown on big KPF’s as it will bring some definite balance to the back 6.

What people never seem to grasp is that the difference in the quality of players is rarely the difference between missing the 8 and winning the GF.

The key is fitness and continuity, did Richmond ever have the best list in their GF years?

Personally I wouldn’t have had them in the top 6 on talent but they had a game plan that worked, a huge fitness base and a fortunate run with injuries (I remember them complaining about Edwards being out in a matchup we were missing Shuey, Gov and Shep).

Sure, if our midfield pulled the digit out our forwards could be anything, even at a stretch I'm not really disputing that.

It's just that I find it so extremely unlikely. We don't flat track teams anymore, we're often non competitive in general. I just don't see where these big bags of goals are supposedly going to come from? Especially with the clubs greatest ever goal scorer JK gone and Allen having plenty of question marks over him.

Add in Rioli going, Cripps approaching 31, Ryan seemingly losing his hunger, and us having no real bright forward talents on our list to pick up the slack (yet). Petch is a bust.

Personally I'd give it a couple years at least. Might turn up some forward talent in the next couple drafts.

I think context is pretty important when looking at a list instead of saying “we had 2 wins the whole list is ****ed”.

Round 16 2020 - Shuey and Yeo missed.... Gaff and Kelly clearly stepped up with 15 and 17 disposals.

Elim final at Optus 2020 - Yeo missing, everyone else plays. Kelly 12 touches, Shuey 14 touches.

Round 6 2021 GMHBA - Shuey and Yeo missing, we get annihilated by 100 odd points. Kelly gets 16 touches.

Round 15 2021 - Bulldogs flog us at home, despite all of them playing. Kelly 14 touches. Gaff 16. Yeo 19 Huge.

Round 16 2021 - The following week Swans absolute annihilate us by 100 points. We arent competitive at all this game despite everyone bar Gaff playing.

Round 17 2021 - My personal favourite. All of them are playing. At home. Against the bottom of the ladder team North Melbourne. We lose by 10 points. Yeo 17, Shuey 18.

Round 20 2021 - Hurns 300th - Shuey the only one missing. We arent competitive for 3 quarters of the game, lose by 8 goals.

Round 22 2022 - All of them play. This is the game our Derby streak ends.

Round 23 2022 - Get flogged by Brisbane at the gabba to round out the year. This was that embarrassing game where the commentary was all about the Lions percentage as they flogged us and got them top 4. Kelly the only one missing.

Round 5 2022 - Fresh off our huge team lifting win vs the Magpies.. we rush all your mates back... all of them bar Gaff play and we get embarrassed ny 80 odd pojnts in front of a home crowd. Shuey 18, Kelly 16, Yeo 15.

Round 5 2022 - Following week Port make us look like a club about to fold. We lose by 80 odd points with Gaff missing.

Round 6 2022 - Yeo misses, Gaff comes back, makes no difference as Tigers flog us by 109 points in front of a home crowds. Gaff has 14 touches.

For the record, I don't think we can use 2022 to predict 2023, nothing went right in a way never seen before.

But we can use 2021 to predict next year. Our list is not stronger than it was then, and it was clear we were going downhill then.
