& that’s after putting on a fair amount of kgs over the pre season

But from the picks Ryan definitely looks like he has filled out some more a fine line between stacking on the kgs but starting to lose some of that mobility

The old footy weight conundrum...Paddy Ryder/Richo mobility V Len Thompson solidness!

Even if you look at Gawn he tends to look pretty learn
Probably depends on the style of ruck we see Ryan developing into

Really looking forward to see what he brings this year and his development

Dimma won us all those flags all by huimself.

Seriously not knocking Dimma he was a major part of 3 flags. I do think towards the end he was too defence focussed. Yeah our attack was built on a solid defence and turnovers via pressure. But basing our whole forward line on scraggy defence? In our prem years we backed ourselves going forward, the last couple of years I got a feeling certain players weren't allowed to show natural flair. Time will tell.
Agreed. To add to this, the whole purpose of the pressure gamestyle during our Premiership years was to play to our player’s strengths. We weren’t good kicks but could run all day. So, we devised a gamestyle that complemented this.

Unfortunately though, our club moved away from playing to players’ strengths in 2023. It’s probably the first year since 2016 that this actively happened IMO. It was obvious in 2022 that we no longer had the high pressure forward line anymore. We now had freewheeling offensive players like Cumberland and Bolton (worth mentioning although he was part of the Premiership era). Changing us to an offensive team worked so well in 2022, but Hardwick panicked after the EF loss to Brisbane and tried to force players to become defensive on all lines in 2023 like in the Premiership days. That didn’t work out because it didn’t suit our players.

Also, we were excellent handballers during our Premiership years. Our current list is pretty ordinary at that now that the likes of Edwards are no longer here/at their peak. No surprise to see that we had a lower kick-to-handball ratio (i.e., more handballing) in the years we did badly in since 2019 (2021, 2023). Our kick-to-handball ratio (i.e., more kicking) was higher in 2020 and 2022, which were finals years for us. Our list just changed over time. This isn’t 2017-2019 where a lower kick-to-handball ratio played to our strengths. Instead of building on 2022, Hardwick scrapped it and ran to a style that got us success in the Premiership era. We handballed and handballed and dropped on the ladder. Safe to say that it didn’t work out.

Hardwick is now gone and our list has once again changed for 2024, so I’m excited to see what style Yze will implement.

I think one of Ryan or Cumberland will be our break-out players next year

Cumbo is a real wildcard not overly young anymore but if it all clicks he could dramatically change the way we play

Ive been buying plenty of stock in our 2021 draft boys
Really hope they all play over 15 games this year and start to be given important roles

Sonsie is the early riser so far. Really put in the work over the offseason, is fitter and looks visibly stronger.

Having said that, Cumbo has also been very impressive according to track watchers, especially with repeat sprints.

Hope so. Sonsie’s only real knock were his weak efforts and low work rate. Everything else is pretty solid.

If he can fix that in the off-season, then he’ll be a big asset for us. Sounds like he’s going in the right direction

gawn looks like one of those weird campaigners that goes on a 5 year running marathon

I really hope it clicks for Noah this season but didn’t we all talk him up last pre season because of how well he was training etc and he had a train wreck of a year

He was good in 2022 though. I think 2023 was a year to forget for him. I think he’ll have a good season
