Henry hasn't really played much as a mid, and when he's gone through there he's nothing special. I think he's destined to be a forward or winger.

Henry is also damaging when he was running through the midfield.

When in the midfield I see that he will more be there for Macrae, Steele, Clark, Jones to feed with a quick handball.

If you think Boyd's SANFL form will equate to the AFL I think a lot are in for some disappointing times. Because of his bulk in that comp he could hold out opponents at the fall of the ball, I very doubt he is going to able to do that against AFL opposition. Players like Gawn, Meek, Darcy, Cameron will own him in a wrestle and others just wont engage and leap or reach over him.

You have to remember that in the AFL the umpires allow opposition ruckman basically to throw the player in front away fromt he ball, Gawn gets away with it constantly. So Boyd standing flat footed under the fall of the ball will just become a target.

He can stand under the fall of the ball all he likes if the other ruckman doesnt engage and times their leap Boyd will just become a rucking bag.
You might be right, but there really is no way to predict with any confidence about this. On revealed form, both in the SANFL and at training, he has not been shown up as not good enough. We'll know more when he faces better and different opposition, but until that happens, it should be very low confidence guesswork.

And it's not like there is no precedent for the shorter/stockier ruckman — Nankervis, Mumford come to mind, even Jack Hayes who is smaller than Boyd in every sense did alright in this role when he played. If he offers anything around the ground, as some have suggested he is capable of, then that is a relevant factor too (contra. Campbell, whose spot on the list he took).

Ultimately, he'll get picked or he won't based on his training and the team needs. Is Boyd/Marshall a better combo than Marshall/Caminiti, Marshall/Keeler or Marshall/Owens. That is the question, and the good news is that (a) we can see how all of those options fair against each other on the training track; and (b) change it from week to week as more information comes to light.

I’ve a feeling Boyd was signed partly out of desperation due to us passing on Soldo..
Keeler is 198cm & looks a bit taller than Harry!
Height isn’t the be all and end all however ruckmen he’ll be up against have a significant reach advantage, that combined with a lack of spring spells trouble.
He’d be able to wrestle at boundary throw ins & ball ups around the ground but will struggle big time at centre bounces where we’re already ordinary!
It's Boyd's girlfriend I feel sorry for.
Must be how Billings feels about Bont.

They choose the band not the pick.
IDK why most people still don't get this.
So basically he means they wouldn’t have given us band 1 if we finished 5th, to allow us to get pick 6.
It was a little more palatable to them ( with their secret herbs and spices) to give us band 1 knowing we’d “only” get pick 8.

He needs to prove he shouldn't be displaced with Macrae now on the list, Windy back from injury, Wilson training midfield minutes, Henry if he is fit and Carol who seems to be doing well.

As the mid with the least about of CBA's in the last 2 rounds, it doesnt seem like he is considered in the first rotation of mids so he's not going to walk into a rd1 spot because he finished the year in the side. He's someone who will need to perform well in the preseason games.

Everyone needs to perform that’s a given now. That’s the value of having reinforcements on most lines now and a healthy list. He did perform in second half of last year when he was back from injury.

Just think it’s funny a few are willing to right him off so quick, calling to delist him and quote CBA attendances for the last two games as a key stat when the people that are seen to be replacing are largely unproven in the position, attended way less if any CBA’s for us or some are 18 years old.

Just bizarre and makes no sense to me!

If he hit the right pay level they would have.
There is no evidence that it works the way you think it does.

I'm still a bit reserved regarding Dow.
I'm not seeing a lot of evidence he'll end up better than Byrnes, let alone be able to do the stuff that got him drafted in the first place.
His reaction time over the loose ball looks elite to my eyes. I reckon it’s nearly at NWM levels.

It would be nicer if his kicking was tidier and his frame was a bit more heavyset.

Please. There’s also no evidence it doesn’t. The pay level is only one of the deciding factors I believe.
Absolutely nobody knows exactly the way things are decided.
A lot of it is the “vibe of the thing” I’m sure. There is nothing transparent about the way it’s decided otherwise none of us would have been sh*tting ourselves been worried about getting shafted after Bassat made his (much needed) comments.

give an example. I can't think of one free agent that went the way you believe.

Before injury he had one really good midfield game just to tease.

Feel like Said is one of those draftees that can play early but has a limited ceiling, thus going late

Harvey Thomas 2.0…?

I think he'd need Butler to go down top get a run. He's probably similar to Garcia in that he'll need a spot up forward to get in the side.

I've not seen him but l get the feeling he'll be a good stable-mate for Lancy boy.

People go on about midfielders but ignore that we have one small specialist forward and then Collard who still looks a few years off. Said looks like a player that could step up straight away if needed but also has a bit of Jack Steven potential as a mid. If not he's adaptable enough to play as a high half forward link man.

I've never been a Dow fan but he's a much better player than what he showed this year. He's a big accumulator and a very good contested extractor. Our outside brigade is excellent. We just need Macrae, Jones and Dow types to get it out to them. Jones started to get it late in the year. Dow too to some degree.

Hill, Henry, Wood, Wilson, Byrnes, Nas, Sincs, Hastie and now Travaglia can all move the ball on the outside and if we can get Schoenmaker in we might be able to bypass the centre of the ground all together.

Dows injury in the pre-season last year really seemed to stuff him. He's not going to be a star for us but he could definitely be a contributor.

Correct they are allowed to put the arm out and guard space now which has changed the landscape dramatically.

That maybe so but that doesn’t help a ruckman that’s got much shorter reach!
A short ruckman is up against it at the elite level

Seems the club agree since they wanted Berry out of this year's draft.

Hall's probably the one who would be called upon for that role.
