Going back to Darcy's draft footage, he didn't do well as an inside mid. He'd very often dispose to the nearest person rather than teammate which damaged his overall DE numbers. Given what he's very good at l don't see any justification to put him in the packs and should remain a receiver and runner.
He got a some CB time late last season (kicked that Dangerfield like goal running our of the middle).

I think Darcy will eventually develop into that burst from stoppage player that we all crave. Very similar vibes to Holmes.

Don't forget that most of his underage footy he was a skinny little runner... he has put significant size on even since this time last year.

Whats your vibe on Hall and Carroll mike?
Max Hall has got himself very fit this off season..he seems to me to be a well rounded footballer with some nice traits!
He is built like a cross between Sinclair & Stocker, neither quick nor slow but uses it well & seems a smart player…a one grab mark which I like!!
I believe he’ll get opportunities in the trial games & am confident he’ll do well!
I’ve seen vision of Carrol but will be keeping a keen eye on him at training…he’s a nice size and will likely get more senior exposure with us than Carlton.

Max Holmes is an excellent analogy, very similar traits and projecting elite scope

Ok that's good news. That capability is largely why I'm keen on Lindsay this year. I wish wish wish we had 3 picks in the range.
If Henry's knee isn't stuffed we will be getting some good pace around the ball in 2025 but l still expect it to take a while to gel.

Agree re Lindsay (or Reid for that matter)

I think we have a pretty good mix with pace already so if we can add some inside muscle (Langford preferably) with someone who makes great decisions & can deliver on a platter, it would be a fantastic outcome.

What's everyone's thoughts on Mason Wood playing as a third defender?

I have no idea whether it's a possibility or being considered but I think it could definitely be an option if we don't draft or pick up someone capable of playing as a third tall defender straight away.

Wood has been excellent as a wingman - getting both forward and drifting back. We now have a plethora of options that can play wing with Wilson, Henry, Hill, Byrnes..... even NAS can go through there. Jones did last season and I think Windy could as well.

It seems to me that a transition for Wood to either predominantly a defender or forward would make sense as he gets older. The question is whether he has the craft to play defence. He is an intelligent footballer though.

I think he'd be 100% capable but l suspect Hammer and Ari are likely earmarked for development in that area long term.

It will be interesting to see what position Hammer trains in pre-season and plays in practice matches. He looked solid in limited game as a defender last season.

The other question is whether Arie is a second/third tall or a Grant Birchall type or both even? Hopefully he will be similar to Miles Bergman but be a better player. Be able to play tall or small... also move up the wing etc.

I think it will take more than next year to figure Arie's best go. If he can keep his shit together long enough that is.

For as long as Jack Steele remains our best midfielder and our captain, I find it very hard to see him being played anywhere but the midfield while our midfield remains one of the worst in the league
not sure if steele has a role outside of the midfield, maybe he can impact as a forward but he's not quick so can't fill the pressure role and we have better third tall marking options in chito, sharman, tauru :smirk:

Would be more than happy if Aries ceiling is Bergman. He's a very good player.

I see him playing more time forward next year, especially if Caminiti moves to the backline.

Sharman deep, King CHF with Owens and Wood mobile talls.

I have seen it mentioned before and it has merit. Mason is as strong over head as Battle was, it may take him a game or two to get the defensive mind set, but its definitely worth considering.

As you mentioned we will have plenty of wingman options.

Im getting Isaac Smith vibes

I would like to see Wood stay wing/forward because he can actually kick goals. I think we only have 6 players (Butler, Higgins, King, Owens, Sharman and Wood) on our list who have ever kicked 4 goals in a match. It would be a shame for one of them to be stuck on the other end of the ground when we already struggle to impact the scoreboard at times.

I've also thought about Mase taking Battle's spot, but although he's definitely capable of being serviceable in defence, I feel like we'd be wasting his strength/point of difference, being that he's constantly running to help the backline aerially but also there when we need him up forward to kick a clutch goal or 2.

Haven't put my training thoughts down for a bit so I'll share some. Had a rough few days, followed by my birthday, so been a bit absent.

I'll start by saying it was exciting to see Jack Carroll out there. Probably sounds silly, but he reminds more of Paddy Dow that Paddy Dow does. Seriously, it's uncanny from a distance, or perhaps my eyesight is failing me... he slotted in nicely. I liked his running patterns, neat with the ball in the little bits I saw - he didnt floor me, but I can see why we got him. I wasn't there on Wednesday so I don't know if Friday was his first hit out or not. Ran laps with Byrnes and Jones after some ground work. Byrnes a smooth mover, Jones with a weird chicken wing waddle style and Carroll with a bit more of a junkyard dog country boy style. Is he even a country boy? I don't know. His conditioning wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped, but first training week so hardly an issue.

I focused a bit more on Irish. He's not doing his Mason Wood comparisons any hardly considering he turned out in the white long sleeved skins. I had no idea the guy had the wheels he does. The were on opposite sides of the running drill but he was toe to toe with Darcy. The guy is super agile, and quick. Wilson is stupidly competitive, his head was constantly turned towards Liam at the completion of each drill. Doesn't like losing, that kid.

I see McLennan behind the other half back options. Ross is clearly a fan though based on his late games last year. My main concerns are probably with his kicking, which is probably his weakest asset. He must've overshot the target half a dozen times during the I50 kicking drill.

No Ro, which meant Heath was the main man. Might need to temper the expectations, he's still raw, but the improvement is definitely noticeable.

Coops is a confidence player. I hope Ross and the coaches absolutely put all their faith in him. Sometimes he can struggle and get inside his own head it seems. This week he felt a bit rusty, I rate him so highly though. Our best bet is to keep him in the forwardline and let him cook.

It's been a few days so I don't really remember much of the specifics. Preseason trainings can be a bit off at times based on trying new things and preseason training loads etc.

That goal was when he ran in from half forward
