no way do you drive the rolls royce on dirt roads
leave him FF or CHF
He is your average Falcon at this point in time , he may turn into a Rolls Royce but he is no where near it ATM
Christ if Owens can go in the ruck why cant Max ?

I tend to agree as much as I hope Shoenmaker is up to the job at CHB I have my doubts at this stage in his development. I hold concerns Shoey's lack of a defensive game and contested marking is going to get exposed in a key position role. On last years form he was not ready and IMO Caminiti should be trained for the role. I know we recruited Barrat to step into a key defensive role, but like Shoey he also will need time.

I understand Hammer is an important cog in our forward mix, but I think he can be filled with other players and would really blossom down back. For team stability I think we would gain more with Caminiti's intercept marking and defensive game in defence, while other players find their feet for the season. Depending on team balance return Hammer to CHF when the others are ready to step up to the role.

I know Keeler is an unknown at the top level, but I think he is one whose attributes will translate well at the top level. So I would take a gamble and try Keeler forward and as a 2nd chop out ruckman OR as you mentioned play another ruckman with Marshall predominantly forward. Heath has shown he is quite good when resting forward he can take a good grab and apply some decent pressure. Boyd is also and unknown at this stage. Who knows by the start of the year Tauru might be up and flying and start the year as a tall HFF and help fill the void of losing Hammer to defence.

Some have suggested we cant play all of King, Caminiti, Sharman and Owens in the same F50 which is an interesting call. Sharman and Owens both play like tall flankers rather than keys. Both are quite mobile, work hard both ways and apply decent pressure. At times in games when they can get isolated one on ones out the square they might look like key position players but thats just part of the rotation as the games progress.

Given the recent practice intra club games RTB is keen to give Shoey the first bite at CHB, be interesting to see how that unfolds.
Right now CHB is a bit fuzzy since Wilkie often handles the 2nd tall duties, so it's a good time to giva Arie a shot while we have good experience around him. Long term we have 4 potential KPDs under 21yo on the list so it'll sort out in time.l think it's the least of our worries ATM.

We're getting close to the ready product but the ruck situation and a functioning forward line need to get sorted. Personnel wise there won't be much change from the current list, but they'll be after premium inclusions like LDU and TDK.

Training Report 15/01/25 New
Tauru, Henry, Boxhall, Collard, Hastie in rehab/ non contact group. Henry running much better than pre Xmas
Forwards v backs, King and Keeler taking good contested marks.
Doogs, Sincs, Barrat, Arie, Stocker, Webster, Sandy guy no.46 backs.
Keeler, Hammer, Hall, King, Higgins Butler, Hill, Titanic, Wilson, Wood forward
Two alternating groups.
Speaking to Tony Brown, reckons the boys are looking sharp.
Boys working hard, all blowing a gale.
Best I have seen King contest, really physical. Bolton really happy.
Clark in the gym on the bike. Another interrupted pre season by the looks. Time might be up.
Whoever scouted and drafted Garcia is an absolute genius. Everything he does is first rate.
Boyd v Roh in ruck. Macrae, Steele, Phillipou, Hall Garcia, Hill, mids for reds.
Like most left footers, Jack Macrae's right leg is only there to stop him falling over. Absolutely no right foot.
Dodson is a big unit, must have hit the weights over Xmas, going to be massive when filled out. Wearing the fluro in match sim.
Looking good in sim, Roh, Hill, Sincs, Hugo, Windy, Doogs, Macrae and Steele prominent. Can't spot Carroll, might be in yellow like Dow, Travalgia, Jones etc. Hard to tell how they are going due to no numbers on the yellow bib. Hard to see.
Boyd is no.31
Training done by 11.10 am. May have started earlier, I didn't get there until 10.15 am.
Spirited session

So far this off-season, the big difference seems to be options! Players are fighting for places! For about the past 3 years, we have had a rehab group permanently so big that we've been scratching around for enough numbers to competently fill all positions with fit players. For the first time in a long time, selectors may actually have a choice, fingers crossed it stays this way!

I think I made a comment last year at some point that the effect that we needed to start delisting players that were permanent members of rehab. It was like permanently operating with a playing list of only 32..........

Cheers joff. How was Boyd looking against Roma?

When i was a little tacker , i saw a Rolls Royce driving around a farm paddock near Hazelwood.
Turned out the state had bought the farm where the power station/open cut was built.
He spent some of his money on a Rolls Royce.

There was still lots of unused land and the guy had an agreement to still graze his cattle on it, and apparently it was pretty common for him to drive around the paddocks in the Rolls.

Similarly, Jeremy Clarkson was driving a Bentley round his farm on his TV show.

MG's, Chery's etc probably far less capable to handle the bumps on a dirt road.

Hastie was reported a few days ago as bulking up, possibly gone too hard like Windy and Owens last year?

Disappointed for Hunter hopefully only a minor setback. Even if it's managing training loads it's not a great sign. He needs a solid preseason to take it to the next level.

Thanks Joffa. I got there at 10 and Carroll was doing midfield drills opposed to Owens. Didn’t notice Dow so glad to hear he was out there. I heard Henry mention he was two weeks away. I assume that’s from full training.
You’re right about Dodson. Looks strong for a first year ruck.
We’ll definitely have more midfield options this year.

I have a mate who was involved in the design of large farm irrigation schemes in Tassie. He had regular contact with one of the landed gentry (colonial ancestors who received free land grants and who have avoided paying much tax for generations) who drove around his sheep station distributing hay from the boot and back seat of his Rolls.

Apparently he was very reluctant to contribute any money to a "socialist" water distribution system that would increase his own productivity multiple times!!

Hard to know unless you're internal what the story is with people on the bike.

For all you know that person has put more volume into their legs than anyone else and this is simply part of the plan.

Typically bikes are used for off leg sessions either to prevent, or recovery from an injury.

Given Hunter has never been lauded for him his training volumes it’s reasonable to suspect it’s a measure being used in response to a niggle rather than that of a deload

Steady on fella…it’s a 5 minute a quarter chop out.. you don’t think he cops it as a forward?
Might enjoy the freedom of running around without 2 or 3 players hanging off him
It’s a bad idea. A really bad one.

Went to my first training session for a while.

Generally agree with the above comments, but though Max missed some marks that he should have taken.

Overall I thought the players in the main looked very sharp in the match sim.
Very attacking flavour to move the ball on quickly, and more directly. Though yes still going sideways at times to set up play.

Marshall looked in exceptional nick and was a real standout out to me. Was pushing forward hard as well.
Ari has built up nicely.
Phillipou now has the body of a man.

Boyd looks competitive, and so will be interesting to see him againts other club's rucks. Noted he was in 31, so if he keeps this it is appropriate to see him in "Pup" Sarau's number as he too was an undersized (for his era) ruck.

Garcia has very nice footskills, and he kicks it to great options. His overall game is very good too. So I certainly endorse your comment on him above.

Peak insanity and stupidity to want to move one of the best rucks in the comp to the forward line where they are exceedingly average.
Only if you think of Marshall in isolation.

Got down today. Really hard to see much with an eye on the youngster. Joel Selwood was down at training chatting to Travaglia and Barratt and Darcy Wilson.

Standouts for me were McConnell who looks like a really pesky spirited small defender that can rebound. He was opposed to Higgins at times and seemed tough to play on. At the end of the session I heard him asking Wilson to head back out to to do more. Seems really driven and I think a good chance to make it.

King looks in ripping nick and took a few big clunks in huge packs. Hammer was opposed to him at one stage so I think he's still a chance to be trialled in defence but to me didn't look natural there in this session.

Hugo looked very nice. At one stage in a Sim he grabbed it and absolutely took off and laced someone out in the middle of the ground. Just one passage but he looked elite. His pace can be a weapon.

I get a good vibe from Tobie. He just seems driven to make it as a player, really vibrant and positive seems another to add to Wilson and Pou who will bust a guy every session. He's a lovely size nice and tall whether it's a wing or eventually in the middle of at HB he'll play plenty this year.

Boyd in the ruck against Marshall was interesting, seemed to win the majority of hitouts and is very good at using his body in the ruck contests. Didn't notice him around the ground at all so can only comment on this part of his game. Marshall got plenty around the ground and looks in great nick.

In terms of size we were standing next to Barratt and he has the body of a 100 game player. Looks incredibly fit and strong. Hopefully he can football.

Nice to see Windy amongst it and looking fit. A lot of the guys don't really warrant comment, we just know what to expect I'm talking about Wood Hill Steele Sincs Higgo, they're pros.

The recruit that will CLEARLY have the biggest impact is Macrae, already looks like our best mid.

A little bit of argy bargey between Hill and Webster at one stage z players are obviously going 100% and competition is high

Biggest shout out goes to the players for being so willing to give their time at the end of the session for photos and autographs. This stuff makes a huge difference, the young'un absolutely loved it and it further cemented him as a diehard Sainter for life. All the players were so lovely to him.

If I think of any other tidbits I'll post them.

Thats what I saw when I waxed lyrical about Garcia, clean pick up from the contest on the run, into a gap, looked up, and hit a free mid lace out with a left foot kick of about 40 metres. The kid can football.
