Training Pre season training

Its not good.

Weren't there people saying how hard we train. Hardest training team in the AFL. But also we tend to give them more time off.

I hope we didn't push it too far.
It's bloody frustrating. Inevitably injuries will mount up when we start playing games, but consistently coming into the season with a huge injury list is diabolical.

A few more injuries once the season starts and your season is gone before it even begins.

Phillipou's injury might explain why Ross suddenly wanted Wilson at half back. Sinclair to get more midfield clock, Wilson back, Byrnes/Hall in to Wilson's position

I wonder if Garcia was already in the best 22 prior to the Pou injury

INJURY LIST:

Hunter Clark | Groin | 2-3 weeks

Liam Henry | Knee | 4-6 weeks

Alix Tauru | Back | 4-8 weeks

Rowan Marshall | Pelvis | 5-8 weeks

Mattaes Phillipou | Leg | 10-14 weeks

Dougal Howard | Shoulder | TBC

Paddy Dow | Knee | TBC

So on the plus side
  • Caminiti is not on the list!
  • Macrae is a major plus.
  • Garcia and Hall both flying at training. Carroll has looked ok
  • Keeler has looked ok.
  • Boyd while no Marshall has looked ok.
  • Clark should be right by Round 1.
  • Henry is a maybe for Round 1, though will probably be underdone.

I'd be surprised if Henry is 4-6 weeks away. Unless he's had another set back, he was joining in a few drills with the main group last week so he must be closer to returning to fill training than that.

When should we be worried or ask questions about our pre season program under Ross?

3rd pre season now where we have been smashed by injuries post Christmas. Is it just bad luck or do some things need to be reviewed?
Stress fractures are over use injuries. It feels like we may be pushing the boys too hard but those that get through will be very fit. Pou has obviously been training like a madman. Just have to hope the recovery from the stress fracture goes smoothly, it can be a tricky injury.

Two players have had serious injuries so far that could be attributed to over training, potentially. The rest are a popped shoulder, an infected blister that turned nasty, a pulled groin and a couple of injuries from last season.

Its absolutely shithouse dont get me wrong, but there's every chance all but two of them will be ready to go by round one (Henry a bit more unlikely).

I mean of the injuries, the only ones that could be put down to load are:

Clark: Groin

Marshall: Pelvis

Philipou: Leg

Clark is pretty injury prone as is, and Marshall has been pretty injury free considering his load over the last few years. I guess you could put Pou on the over exerted list, but I think it's a bit much.

This is now beyond a joke.
How much of this is due to the fitness and training personnel and programme?

A dislocated shoulder is one thing - accidental - but Roma and Pou’s injuries definitely sound training related.

Extremely frustrating.

FB: Webster Cordy Schoenmaker
HB: NWM Wilkie Sinclair
C: Wood Steele Wilson
HF: Hill King Higgins
FF: Owens Sharman Butler
R: Boyd Macrae Windhager
I/C: Stocker, Byrnes, Hall, Caroll
Sub: Jones

Not ideal but we've also put up worse teams over the past two years.
Big ask for Boyd to ruck 100% game time coming straight from the SANFL. Keeler or hammer would need to play to give him a chop out. Probs drop Carroll out for one of those two

HB: Wang.-Mil - Caminiti - Wilson
C: Hill - Sinclair - Wood
HF: Hall - Keeler - Higgins
With Garcia starting on the pine?

Don’t love the level of actual defensive nous at half back…

And NOW

The “michaelcos” Memorial Rolling Round 1 Team

HB: Wang.-Mil. - Caminiti - Sinclair

Foll: Boyd - Steele - Macrae

Int: Butler Carroll Owens Garcia Stocker

Em: Jones McLennan Schoenmaker Heath

Injured/Questionable: Dow Howard Clark Henry Phillipou Marshall
That’s an ordinary team

Jeez. It's incredible to think that two injuries can diminish our optimism for an entire season.

We've discussed it for years - "what if Rowan gets injured?".

At this stage, it looks like Rowan shouldn't miss too many games, but it's far from ideal. With Pou, I think his injury hurts just as much, if not more. To me, I have always seen him as that future superstar that we have been crying out for.

With another month or so until the real stuff starts, I really hope we start to incrementally taper off the excessive running we seem to do each session. What do I know, but I won't be able to stomach another preseason of unnecessary injuries.

Despite being slightly pessimistic because of the recent news, I just can't stomach fielding a weakened team in Round 1 against the Crows (who should be good this year) at the AO in the Sunday sun. Can see it being a tough day for our back six

To play finals - and we should be looking to play finals every season - you simply must have a reasonable start to the year. We don't have to be faultless, but we can't be hoping for miracles and others to fall off in the backend.

Maybe I should remember "it's only January", but heck I have seen this movie before.
