I mean of the injuries, the only ones that could be put down to load are:

Clark: Groin

Marshall: Pelvis

Philipou: Leg

Clark is pretty injury prone as is, and Marshall has been pretty injury free considering his load over the last few years. I guess you could put Pou on the over exerted list, but I think it's a bit much.

Marshall's ridiculous workload for the last few years was unsustainable, and he's approaching 30 so we can't just roll him out for 90% ruck for an entire season anymore. We've been lucky he's not had a major injury the last few years but this is probably the first season we can potentially cover it (might be optimistic with this). Let's wait and see!

I dint think there is a lot of respect for the Saints in SA. Port supporters know we are their bunnies, and Crows supporters feel much the same.

Not looking forward to round 1 and having the crows forwards monster our backs. Wilkie can't cover all of Tex, Tilthorpe and Fogarty.
Three weeks later we play Port and their midfield will once again be the difference.

Losing Howard and Pou isn't great for the match ups against the SA teams.

I'd love to see Caminiti start training with the defenders. It feels a bit like when we were forced to put Battle into the backline for an extended period and then discovered he wasn't a bad fit. Caminiti is not exactly banging down the door for a key forward position.

Battle is a very smart footballer who played on instinct and made great decisions with the ball. Very underrated was his ability to sell some candy to get himself out of trouble. I don't see it with Caminiti, he's one of those players where you can see him thinking about every decision and movement. I'm not against it because we don't have many options, but I don't think this is the solution long term. Hope to be proven wrong

We'd offer him a mill a year to get him if he played for someone else, so I've got no issue with us paying him dr evil wages.

How ordinary is your memory?
It was only a handful of years ago rowan 'the prospect' marshall got a shot in pre-season... only after tom hickey and lewis pierce went down injured.
I think Dodson will be a better ruckman than Marshall, and has capacity to be All-Australian calibre.

Butters (2xAA) is a much better player than Nas and plays in a role - fast mid/fwd - that is severely lacking in personnel both at our club and across the competition. Very arguable to say he is easier to replace

If Nas leaves then we have Travaglia, Arie, Hastie all vying for that spot as kids who could be very good players. We have no one that projects to be close to Butters' level in the same role
Butters is one of those players who can turn games, and although Nas is skilful and played some good footy, he is a different kind of player. Whatever it takes if we could ever land Butters

I think the Battle options are more Sharman or Owens from the forwards. Hammer is more a Howard replacement. Otherwise Wood could be dropped across HB as a third tall.

Ideally we can play Cordy as the Howard replacement and one of Ari, Keeler or McLennan can step up to take Battle's spot.

There seems to some real concern about our d50 set up. For me the personnel is less important than we’re making it out to be.
This is why Ross and Co get paid, and we’ve proven to be one of the hardest teams in the comp to score against. In year 3 I don’t expect this to change for the worst.

That's a different conversation. You'd definitely love to poach him.

Trying to think of the most recent Saints player who can do this? Any ideas?

Jones when he had that one good season. Was hitting the ball at pace and bursting away. I think Stocker could probably play that kind of midfield role and Garcia would be ideal as that ballistic mid.

If we wanted Butters we'd need to convince him to come to StKilda.
Whether or not Nas went to Port wouldn't make any difference to Zac.

Therefore .....

Jones playing half back at Sydney still had excellent contested possession numbers at times.
Stocker doesn't have this element in his game.

I meant more as that ballistic type of mid where he hits the ball at pace and clears it. Stocker is playing more of a backline tagger role. Jones was playing the loose rebound role up there. It looks like Stocker is literally told to sit on his player and don't let them touch it when he plays back. He's very accountable but not much else.

I've noticed that Stocker isn't particularly quick off one step but from the second step he seems to get real pace up. If he could stand off slightly and hit with momentum I think that suits his skill set. You don't need to be overly contested to do that role.

I think Garcia has it in his natural game anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a Butters type.

As far as playing the Crows first up.
I don't think their forward line is too daunting.
Tex and Fogarty aren't too tall, or too clever for Wilkie and Webster.
Thilthorpe is the danger, and we'd probably have to play Cordy on him, which will probably end up being acceptable or terrible.
Then its Sinclair and Nas, i'd have Stocker on the bench, leaves a spot for either Schoenmaker or McLennan.

Could it just be as simple as Cordy and Barrat for Dougal and Battle, then the obvious wilkie, sinclair, nas, webster +1-2 of arie and stock?? Feel like I read quite a bit about Barratt being AFL ready straight away (this was when he was drafted), reallllyyyy dont wanna see Arie playing battles role yet until I'm convinced he can be a competent defender.

Cordy yes.

Successive coaches have shown a reluctance to thrown unproven KPD talent in at the deep end. I suspect a work around (like Caminiti) is much more likely.

Yeah it could be that but I think everything just depends on praccies

We have a few options - albeit unconvincing ones - with Cordy, Barrat, Caminiti, Boyd, Sharman, Keeler, Arie all having some sort of experience as key defenders. Can imagine there'll be a lot of switching and swapping in the Carlton game before we narrow it down for the Port game

I said a bit light ("and Dodson is still a bit light but looks every 2.54cm to be a future ruck for us") and not a bit skinny, and as yet he lacks the muscle strength he will need at AFL Level in the ruck. Not surprising though as he is young.

Muscle is denser than fat, so it takes up less volume. So Dodson will weigh more when he muscles up, even if his volume stays the same, or even if it reduces. Marshall is superfit and well muscled, but looks lean, but is a good weight still due to his strength.

Increased weight, and strength, will both help him to be a better ruckman, as will training, coaching and experience.

Afraid you are wrong there.

Even us mere mortals are allowed in to RSEA Park to watch training. Something I have done for over forty years now. It used to be better when I could play a game of Squash at the club while I was there, then have a meal and a beer while they announced the team before they released it to the media.
I’m more concerned by the fact he’s apparently 2.54cm.
