As others have said. The thing that is frustrating me the most is that three years in our forward coach still hasn't coached our young forwards how to lead to different areas to split the defenders. Honestly, McVeigh as forward coach has been an absolute failure and should be moved on.
please do not blame the forwards. This is a game plan issue. The effing problem was we just bombed the effing ball on every occasion. We never even looked for an effing lead

Can't take much out of today aside from a good warmup.

Missing Rampe, Chad and Papley. Pretty big outs.

Jordon will definitely start next week is what I've taken away from today. Very decent player.

Before he was injured I can see Adams tries hard, but geez he's a crap kick. Scared he'll throw the entire team out of sync.

That would be lack of experience of playing together.

I think we are mad if we play all of them but if we do Logan/Mclean/Amartey need more forward craft together.

As unreliable as Rowy and Parker?

By the way I also believe Ladhams was playing some sort of Twilight Zone game that only he knew about. Because he was certainly not in the same zone as his mids. They were looking for the tap out & he is taking the ball & handballing to opponents

Jordon is a lock next week.

I was genuinely impressed with Roberts down back, playing that medium defender role similar to early Mills.

Gus played like a good player having a shocking night. Huge efforts, made a lot of contests, but the ball just never sat for him, he was just fumbly and off. Hopefully doesn't dint his confidence. Borderline for next week, won't be surprised if he misses but with Parker, Mills and Adams (possibly) out he might get a chance to redeem.

Ladhams was honestly excellent. Surprise package. Won't challenge Grundy for a spot next week but if he keeps playing like that all year he'll apply some serious pressure. Some of his taps went awry but then so did Grundy's, perhaps even moreso.

Speaking of, Grundy was OK. Looked excellent at times with some really dominant hitouts, but the connection with the midfield (other than Adams) wasn't quite there. Hopefully something they can build through the year, because if they get that connection then look out.

Thought Rowy was excellent in the mids, Blakey and McCartin were great in defence.

Corey Warner, while I wouldn't say he was busy, looked the most confident and composed I've seen him. And BIG. OK, not big by normal standards, but certainly compared to where he was last year. Looks like he's finally filled out his frame, and he knows it. He was good playing that half-forward role. He's shown glimpses previously but looked like a boy playing amongst men, today he looked like he could be an AFL player.

All in all not a bad hitout, would have been nice to get a win but don't see any blaring warning signs. Next week will be the true test.

Based on his body of work at Collingwood, I think calling him a poor kick is a bit rich.

He’s been a high calibre player for a decade.

Just needs to stay fit.

Jamarra is more imposing and you can see the confidence in his game. He's also showed progression year on year. Just have a feeling McDonald is a bit stagnant and seems reserved out there. Desperately hope he proves me wrong. Probably wouldn't help with the Freo interest tho. We're in a pickle
Horse's game plan did not suit Logan at all. Bomb, bomb, bomb. In fact, the game we played today did not give any of our forwards even half a chance. 80% of entries were repelled. That is staggering and says either the coach is an idiot or he doesn't care

Take Aways from today. If we play like this we won't win too many. Constantly bombing to the forward line and ignoring leads, like those made by McDonald again & again tell me either Horse is feeding us s**t or we are ****ed. One of the two. This was a very underwhelming performance. We did not practice any of the moves we made last week. No short kicking forward or off the backs either. Just long bombs for most of the game. If we play this style of footy we get flogged by 90-100 points next week. They will intercept everything.

But I don't think for a moment we will play like this. I just don't understand what was the point of this exercise? We did not get good time into young players to play our style, just our style of 5-10 seasons ago,. I understand not letting the opposition understand your game plan but if your players are good enough it won't matter how much they understand. you will still be able to move the ball & make the plays.

Today I thought Logan & Wilbur were deliberately sacrificed for subterfuge. They had absolutely no impact. In fact, where was Wilbur after about half way through the second?
Same with jmac, taken out of the game for 2nd and 3rd. Don't understand the point of a praccy if you're not practicing for next week. Throwing magnets around willy Nilly. Just seemed pointless.

Hopefully the coaches just saw it as a random hitout. Otherwise might be back to the future without Don Pyke

Now there’s a good game day thread style rant.

We should start a poll.

Is Horse:

(a) an idiot; or
(b) doesn’t care.

Still unsure on Roberts. Yes he competes, but what does he really offer for our style of play. The whole team just looked like a bunch of out of position scrappers tonight. And I feel like that's what Roberts is doing at half back. We need the ball being fed out of the contest, not inviting the contest.

Haven't read everyone's thoughts but to me that was..... boring.

Not horrific, not amazing, and not much to be taken from it, but geez it was a tough watch. Not helped at all by the umpires turning it into a rugby match with their whistles and the humidity making the ball like a bar of soap. I thought Rowbottom was very good but the fact he was probably our cleanest player is telling.

That we also have a game plan that tries to get the ball into the hands of guys like Blakey and Gulden, and they mostly butchered it all night, was also a reason for things often coming undone. We just couldn't string that many consecutive possessions together enough.

Of the players who needed good games, I thought Wicks, Melican, Campbell, Roberts, Ladhams, McInerney and Jordon were all good, and did what they needed to do to get round 1 games. Fox also wasn't bad albeit in junk time.

McLean probably has a nervous wait. I love him and obviously think he's better than Ladhams but there's no doubting Ladhams was better tonight. In fact he was just about our best big man tonight. Given they're in contention for that second ruck/third tall role, it'll be interesting what Horse does.

Interesting things to come out of a very uninteresting game.

I get we bombed today but we didn't last week. And looking at the presentation from our forwards they looked lacking and frequently leading to the same spots without much imposure. As a forward you have to lead the kicker to where you want it, or position yourself in a way the kicker can lead you to the ball. We had neither tonight

Kicks both feet as good as each other, is always in the game, does little things that have big impacts, is most noticeable when he is not on field. Bobs up and is that missing link. Does things in the game that are expected. Continually. Is never out of the game. You can't put your finger on what is so special about what he does because he is always at it. At everything. Always.

Always struggled in the contest

Agree
You'd struggle in the contest too if you were getting the delivery he was getting today. A disgrace to any Swans side EVER. Too high, too long over their heads, or too short, never to a lead. Totally useless delivery. If we are going to be a successful footy team we need to have a total synergy. Did not see any of that today. The mids &b backs were totally divorced from the forwards. Possibly it was deliberate. But if not we are in trouble
