Scotch beat Rooster’s boys at their own game today. Quick ball movement, pace, gut running and numbers around the action. Throw in good execution and it’s hard to understand why the ladder positions aren’t in the wrong order. Maybe I’ve just seen Scotch when they’re ‘on’.

With a top two finish unlikely the boys at Dairy Bell have quite some soul searching to do on today’s effort.

Yes AM Scotch sensational today. Hardly missed a target all day and easily the best I have seen them play. But no need for soul searching on the back of one terrible effort. There were 8 forced changes from last week’s team. I defy any side to maintain their structures when a third of your previous weeks team gets wiped out in one go. Clearly we got the balance wrong today with far too many youngsters and too many ‘smalls’ against a bigger side but were short on other options really. Having said that full credit to Scotch. There were fantastic and never gave us a sniff.

You will see a different De La team next week and beyond. As Scotch proved today a lot can change in a week.

You're sounding a bit like Brian, Rooster. Always ready with the undermanned reason.:D

That number of changes does have an impact, no question. But it doesn't explain not doing the basics. Top units have their players so well drilled that inclusions know the structures so well they slot in seemlessly thereby reducing the prospect of floggings.

The other concern for you is a top two finish is probably out of reach and I wouldn't want to meet Carey first up.

I don’t sound anything like Brian. I was simply responding to your post and your suggestion of soul searching. All teams have ins and outs and absences. At a guess we have turned over around 43 - 44 players this year but never that many in a week. Even during a horror 2011 season we never lost 8 in one go. And give me spell about inclusions knowing structures and being able to ‘slot in seemlessly’. This is amateur football not AFL. You just hope that if lose over a third of your team in a week that your replacements are up to it.

You gave been very quiet about our fortunes this year. No acknowledgment that after tough season in 2011 we have won enough games to lock in a finals spot and that our ressies and both U19 teams are on top of the ladder? I guess if its taken 14 rounds for you to have a crack and to find some negatives then we are doing ok. Most clubs would happily swap places with us I think.

We were beaten by a far better side on the day pure and simple. Well done to Scotch. They were awesome and we had a shocker. We will be better next week. If it pans out that way we look forward to playing a 1st semi against Carey or Scotch on neutral ground.

Spot on. Amazing the difference personnel makes. Scotch had a few back, De La had lots missing - Williams, Roberts, Hine, Humphrey, Semmel, Moore, Shields etc. Clearly why DLS, OX, Coll have been up there consistently is depth. Carey have the best top 10 probably, the worst 20-30 though of the top teams. So personnel is always a factor. Credit to De La - their reserves still won which was a good effort.

Geez Rooster you really do get stirred-up easily. There was a smiley following the comparison with Brian. Lighten up!

As for some of your other comments, we'll agree to disagree.

Perhaps put some balance and fact to some of your posts and I might no get so stirred up. On another note ‘your’ boys very good yesterday. Best 2 umpires going around and should get the big dance again.

Well, I guess for some 'facts' are in the eye of the beholder Rooster. And on that matter, I have nothing whatsoever to do with the VAFA men in white.;)

Bob with the greatest of respect, any game they play away they will struggle. Caufield maybe the exception.
Definitely teams sitting above them.

Back from a long absence I know but I've still been watching from a distance.
Just about everyone wrote SBMT off and consigned them to the relegation basket pre and early season...but they have proved all the so called Big Footy judges wrong winning away from home again today at EP and consolidating a place in Premier again next year. Scotch win yesterday must have sent a shudder through the form tipsters who again didn't pick the Tigers to win this week. Lots to like about the next group of young cubs Mick Dwyer and his team have continually blooded this year.

Love to hear a word or two from all of you who spoke about the ' train wreck' and all the doom and gloom headed for Brindisi Street earlier this year.

Perhaps the train derailment is closer the station of students in central Melbourne?'

It's always intersting to see towards the end of the season to see just how many players have rotated through the senior sides.

Players used in the seniors so far: -
Old Xavs - 35
Collegians - 38
DLS - 44
Carey - 47
Old Scotch - 36
St Bernards - 39
SBMT - 37
Uni Blues - 46
Old Trinity - 40
Caulfield - 49

Can we all just AGREE that ALL teams have players OUT every week and leave it at that. Its a given!!

Yes we can, however i think the above is worth looking at and interesting. It is reasonable to draw the following
De La has great depth
Carey has good depth and better than posted regularly here.
Blues and Caulfield have struggled with numbers, but might also have had to experiment due to poor results.
Will Xavs and Collegians be tested if a few go down between now and finals?

OR

De La, Carey and StB's just have more mid tier players and the coaches select their players based on who they are playing and on players form?

There are plenty of ways to read into these stats with the only definitive being that there is none. Can't say Xavs would be tested if a few went down with certainty. Perhaps their best 6-8 ressies players are equal to their worst 6-8 1's players. Their ressies are flying. Does perhaps show the troubles Caulfield are having this season.

OK. this is directed to all the experts out there:

Final 4 in order?
Winner of 3 v 4?
Winner of 1 v 2?
Grand Finalists?
Premiers?
I know its a number of weeks away. treat it as a time capsule concept. Closest to the pin or a winner
has bragging rites.

It will be Xavs v Coll GF,
however Scotch V Old Carey for the 1st semi may not be as silly as it sounds. If De La drop this week they are firmly in the gun- they have Xavs, Tigers away, Old Carey away in the last three. Looking at the fixture, if Scotch beat everyone bar Old Carey,Old Carey beat everyone bar Collegians, both will have three wins from four and then De La are under lots of pressure. Purely speculation however!

Just as important is the relegation battle. It looks likely that it will all come down to Trinity v Blues at Trinity, amazing to think that Blacks may finally be restored to the power club at the Varsity. You wouldn't back Blues with bad money to stay up and what better way for Rambo to hang up the boots by securing the burners another year in the top flight.

It might be a moot point. Didnt the ammos consider making Premier a 12 team division this year? It could well be on the cards next year. Hopefully they see sense and dont keep both of Caulfield and the second bottom team. Logic says one down, three up if this does happen.

i'd put $1000 on one of 2 things happening in this years granny.

Xavs Win.
Or more likely for me - Winner of the prelim wins the flag..

Xavs and Colls are as beatable as De La, Scotch and Carey

This week:

Scotchies v Trinty
Caulfield v SBMT
Collegians v Old Carey - optimism abounds! o_O
Blues v Xavs
DLS v Bernies
