Seniors – finally a competitive game for the day

With Chad Jones, Glenn Chivers, Alex Mcleod and Tom Gleeson all available and playing their first practice game of the year for Bernard’s, Anthony Rock and his team fielded a very competitive squad against a strong Mooroopna line-up.

In a first half where Bernard’s dominated in general play, but wasted opportunities in front of goal, the visitors were clearly playing with a tempo and game style that saw Bernard’s enjoy the better of the first half contest.

After half time, as the Bernard’s coaches started to rotate through more of the 13 players on the extended bench, and Josh madden, Chad Jones, Tom Caven, and 2 or 3 other senior regulars enjoyed more bench time, the Mooroopna Cats worked their way back into the game.

A kick after the siren gave the Cats a narrow victory on the scoreboard, 8.8.56 to 7.12.54, though both coaches clearly moved many players after half time and experimented with players in different positions. Most important from a Bernard’s perspective, the game was a very physical contest, and our endeavour and physicality was the equal of a physically mature and strong Mooroopna lineup.

Again – 100% injury all clear, despite a sickening tackle which saw Nick Cooke end up under observation at Shepparton base hospital until 8.00 pm Saturday night. We are pleased to report that Nick is in good health, and will be available for round 1 against Old Trinity.

Prove it!!!

Even so, he coached at the school and got paid for his services. Damn it, an Ex AFL player earning money from what he knows best, football. Oh the shame. Its a travesty of justice.

Really, Scotch should have their 2013 Premiership taken off them, or maybe their 2013 finals appearance.

I dont think DLS will be near the 4 this year. Substitute them for Scotch and that's probably my top 4 (in no particular order). I think Collegians are a smokey to get back in there. Hit hard with injuries last year (and guys O/S like Scott, Hylton and Holst), and from what i hear have no issues with that this year.

On another note, I just had a look at the fixtures, and note that the Premier A 3rds fixture has 8 teams, and the Premier B thirds has 12. Uni Blues 3rds are in A, and Trinity, Brighton and Beauy 3rds are all still in B. Why the hell can't we just have 10 teams and 10 teams!!

Unfortunately I think might be right. De La will need a fair bit of luck this year to stay in touch. Still plenty of good players but nowhere near the depth of recent seasons. Have really had the cleaners put them through them in the off-season with departures, retirements and other absences for various reasons.

Very hard to pick who will be contenders at this point.

De La has been taking the longer option more this year I think, even though they are still not over endowed with height. Not before time either.

Xavs still way out in front. Their depth is unrivaled. Blacks only just scraped over the line against Fitzroy last weekend. Bernies touched them up convincingly too. Xavs, Bernies and SBMT the ones to beat.

Juice missing the first 6 or so rounds. Their list has remained fairly stable – McGettigan & Shakib out, Tobin & Liston in are probably the big moves. Think Chris Richards might be out for while with a shoulder but not entirely sure.

SBMT full of talent and will be thereabouts but still nowhere near the class of Xavs. OX still miles ahead of the rest .

Juice hasn't even started running yet after his ankle/foot surgery from what i hear. Lucky to be in before at least Round 10, but with around 299 senior games under his belt, he'll pull on the boots no matter what this year. Mangoni also injured from reports, and not likely to start the season. I rate his game very highly.

George Rowlands also gone, and it doesn't help that Pat Nicholls decided he was coming back to SBMT this year, and not long efter the clearance goes through he's off chasing the bucks at Cheltenham, and put a clearance through to transfer to the SFL.

From all reports they have been unbelievably undersized in their praccy games, so much so that Robertson is their number 1 ruckman. Whilst he is one of the great tall defenders in the comp, he is no ruckman and leaves them a bit more exposed down back, expecially with Shakaib out as well. They may be a big slider this year.

Having said all that, they always have good local talent coming through, so dont think they will be relegated, but they'll be back in the pack for sure.
