What’s happened to De La? Where’s Minchington?
Minchington has retired. Body cooked and interest waned. Overall the numbers are good but the top end quality has taken a hit. Stacks of retirements, including the club’s best player over the last few decades Tom Humphrey. A few others have left for coin. Not a unique problem to De La but many players no longer have the drive or interest to play footy anymore. The 0-2 start is primarily because they have played easily the best two sides in the comp. Expect to go 0-3 after the bye but should win a few after that. Mid table probably the realistic goal.

Have said this before and apologies for the rinse and repeat but after fighting well above its weight division for decades De La will soon be an entrenched mid-tier club like the other non-APS school-based teams and the majority of district clubs. As early as 2023 Premier A grade will be solely the domain of APS schools plus the 2 Melbourne Uni clubs. (Anyone want to bet against Trinity and St Bernards being replaced by Haileybury and Uni Blacks?) Quite simply the best school kids from the ACC and government systems get picked off by the APS schools around years 8- 11 and very few clubs can compete with the networks of the elite schools or blue blood uni’s. It is what it is. Just find your level and do the best you can.

They’ve always come across as a “footy factory” with gun 19s always coming through. Stuff that eastern and southern clubs can only dream of having.

It’s a real shame looking at premier A. Exciting for the league no doubt. In saying that though, De La did manage to land a few ex afl players the last few years didn’t they? Not a bad platform.

Still have a good U19 program. 3 x U19 teams with one of those in 19 Premier. Most football playing school leavers tend to play for the old Colls but we are a small school and combined with the reasons already outlined the depth of talent that sustained us as a Premier division club for years is no longer there. Still get a few gems and some good young talent in the current senior team. I think there were at least 5 or 6 still eligible for 19s in the Rd 1 side. We just need to come to terms with the fact that the VAFA has changed and having good U19s won't keep you at the pointy end anymore.

In regard to ex-AFL players. Had Minchington for half a season and a few years back Jason Tutt for 2 seasons. My memory might be fading but I can’t recall any others over the 15 or so years.

From memory you also recruited Jordie McKenzie who played at the dees, albeit he didn’t end up playing any games for you?

What happened to the boys who came back from Mordi? Humphrey, Kneebone, Haley & Moore?

We loaded up for a red holt tilt in 2020. The boys you mention and a few others wanted to finish where they started but the COVID non-season finished that. Moore playing in the Supers. I think Haley moved interstate for work and the others have retired. Could sure use them now. We had assembled a very good squad for 2020 and were probably short odd to win it but in reality had we gone up we would have come straight back down. Has been a battle ever since.

McKenzie was hoping to play but could not get medical clearance due to repeated concussions. He went to Collegians as an assistant coach with his mate from Melbourne Jarred Rivers. We did have ex Pie and Eagle Josh Smith on the books for 2020 also. He was teaching at the school but when COVID happened he lost his job and moved back to WA to play in the WAFL.
