Which would leave us thin in the FWD Line .....I would have gone Meek, is a good player lacking opportunities

Sometimes, as frustrating as it is ....you have to wait for the right opportunity .....Barnett would have been a great get this Draft
would have been happy with either of your approaches

Without doing a full analysis
CARL (Docherty)
COLL (Moore, Howe, Daicos)
GWS (Whitfield)
RICH (Short)
SAINTS (Sinclair)

All, it could be argued, would be better utilized in more attacking roles ....but each Clubs gameplan varies, some like to launch off HB
Explains why Carlton have Docherty training in the midfield & Sinclair/Whitfield were already playing in the midfield... as was Short at times. Daicos also played more midfield as the year went on & expect he will end up their.

Moore & Howe play as talls...

Docherty midfield due to injuries to Walsh & Hewitt ....outside R23, played predominantly back

Whitfield likely playing off HB this season ....had an ongoing ankle injury last year, hence more fwd

Sinclairs out of the box season in 2023, was still off playing HB

No wonder all these half back flankers are winning the Brownlow...

Haha, that’s a classic. Besides all your hullabaloo about Nicks teaching defence first and using this to defend his game plan and selections, you came up with….keep scrapping and trying. You can actually teach that and still attack ;)

And again you’re falling into your go to position of lying to try and win your point by making up what I am saying. I’ve never said our young team should be all class and match it with the best experienced teams. But you won’t own up to that, you’ll just slink away again.

That Freo game we lost by a point and the narrow loss to Essendon, were all at the start or the year when we went 3-3 playing a more attacking game plan, look at our scores. 2 bad losses and Nicks panicked and went defensive. I’ve said this a number of times, not that we should be all class and match it with the best experienced teams ;)

Did he? We were 7.6 at half time against the Lions which was comparable to all the earlier season scores. 4.8 against the Saints (scoring shots similar). When looking at the games after those 2 losses you mentioned, we played 3 top 5 teams - and were competitive into the 3rd against them all

Remembering back it was more like our guys were cooked in terms of running a whole game out (think GC the 2-3 years prior when they were the youngest team - would start really well first 5-6 weeks and then drop off)

We should have beaten the Lions and the Saints - never in it v Geelong but had it at 4 goals at 3:4 time

So perhaps he did play a more defensive style to keep us closer - but our first half shots on goal was similar all the way through. Fatigue was definitely a factor

Young gun Josh Rachele is back training with Adelaide’s main group as he continues his progress from a hamstring complaint.
Rachele has been on a modified program this year due to the issue, having spent the bulk of sessions jogging on the sidelines or completing ball drills solo.

On Monday, the 19-year-old took part in match simulation and moved well, even spending some time on-ball, a good sign seven weeks away from round 1.

Rachele played 13 matches last season, including kicking five goals on debut, before a hip injury ended his campaign in August.

Irish recruit Mark Keane, who featured five times for Collingwood from 2019-21 and signed with Adelaide on Saturday, was yet to arrive at the club.

The 22-year-old key defender is expected to start training with the Crows next week.

In other observations at Monday’s session:

■ Forward Shane McAdam was with the main group for the first time this pre-season after building his fitness. McAdam had Covid last week. Speedster Tariek Newchurch also joined in with the full squad after overcoming groin soreness. McAdam and Newchurch later ran laps with SANFL marquee player Jack Madgen.

■ Defender Josh Worrell is still working his way back from a hamstring issue, running solo for part of the session. Second-year midfielder Zac Taylor was jogging away from the main group due to a slight hamstring problem.

■ The teams in match simulation were mixed, offering little indication as to potential A and B squads. Ruckman Reilly O’Brien was working on his forward craft, playing deep in attack, as Elliott Himmelberg and Kieran Strachan duelled in the middle of the ground. Izak Rankine’s ball use and pace again stood out. Patrick Parnell’s sound decision-making and neat kicking have caught the eye the past two sessions.

■ Rory Sloane, Tom Doedee, Ben Keays, Lachlan Murphy and Madgen were wearing non-contact hats. Murphy is the new addition to that group but the club is said to be looking after him and there are no concerns.

■ Forward Darcy Fogarty seems to have become more vocal on the track on the back of his brilliant finish to the 2022 campaign. The 23-year-old has often been one of the loudest voices at training this summer, instructing teammates during drills and match simulation, in another sign of his growth as a player.

■ Adelaide announced that 2023 draft hopefuls Ashton Moir (Glenelg) and Kane McAuliffe (North Adelaide), along with 2023 father-son prospect Tyler Welsh, son of Scott, will train with the club at times this season. Moir and Welsh are forwards, while McAuliffe is a midfielder.

Where did Hately play after the Blues loss? Dawson? Our small forwards played up the ground a lot more.

Why did the coaches say after the Gold Coast we conceded late goals as we were close and went for the win

Matt Turner said Zac Taylor only jogging due to a slight hamstring issue?

He was running 200m or so along boundary. Certainly not jogging

The week before they were working him really hard with full oval running. He was moving very quickly

I get the feeling they think he needs to get fitter for the position he will play

He did get hurt in March sim last week as I previously indicated so a slight hamstring strain may be accurate

Clubs were chip chipping in the backlines up until 3-4 years ago .....but since the intro of 6 x 6 x 6 the emphasis on mid speed has increased, hence players like Crouch & Titch on the outer (and others)

Now it's also speed of exiting the DEF 50 .....Fantasy kings like Lloyd have been relegated, as SYD rely on Nick Blackey to run & carry out of def

Brings into play Milera off HB .....and Rankine's speed, you can understand why his services were so valued
I remember Walsh saying just cause you have a slow team doesn't necessarily mean you have to move the ball slowly. It's why he added guys with kicks on 'em like Grigg in. Guys like Milera and Rankine will have the advantage of being able to provide it on both aspects. I always thought Milera was better behind the ball because of his evasive nature he can get out of a tight situation and with his skills find an open player forward of a pack which completely opens up the forward half of the field.

Now? It's been like that for a decade.

Zonal defenses, defensive switches, prioritizing intercepting power, and counter-attacking football have been staples of 2010s and are all designed to prioritise speed from the defensive unit. Chipping and slow play are usually seen when a team ball movement is shut down, not by design.
Unless you're Don Pyke in 2019 and become so terrified of turning the ball over you spend 3 minutes and 25 disposals moving the ball around your defensive 50.

I think you missed the point. I am not dismissing we may have set up more defensively. I am suggesting that was quite possibly due to greater fatigue as the season progressed so we were more defensive minded.
Not surprising from a young team

Yes we could have played Dawson further up the ground and been out of those games earlier on the scoreboard - would you have preferred that? Are you certain that is a better way to develop the team?

imagine if we can snare moir and welsh. rankine and rachele would need to do lot of midfield time
Hopefully Welsh is encouraged to make the move, like a few small/medium sized forwards in the couple of years leading into their draft, into more midfield minutes over the next two years…
