No, they are not. Yes he has speed, but that's not an excuse. Great players slow down the half-step required to hit a pass at speed. And as TiAn_ stated, he's well and truly capable of shanking them horribly when he's standing still / ambling along.

Smith's disposal by foot is some of the worst in the side and BADLY needs work, ESPECIALLY his short kicks.

He averages 2.0 a game. I know averages don't tell an exact sory, but for reference Naughton averages 2.1 and Charlie Dixon averages 1.9.

Saying he's not a great contested mark is just incorrect.
Yeah nah he is just your whipping boy

Am surprised by that. But facts are facts.

He seems to not attack the ball anywhere like Naughton, seemed to be pushed off it easily and can’t ever remember him having a 10+ mark game (except maybe against us). Used to go for it at GWS.

Last year he was lower at 1.5 rating - still above average (as was Naughton at 1.7 though still rated Elite). Kicking looks opposite to the eye with Naughton a higher average than Lobb - who’s kicking looks significantly better.

In any event we had our most damaging forward line in generations when we had Fluffy the three headed dog of Bruce, Naughton and English playing there. We have for more options than before to be as dangerous or more.

Melbourne is the GF in 2021.

Freo in the Elim in 2022.

If we don’t have 4-6 pragmatic tacticians in the off-season working on eliminating the above season killing periods, who are not sycophants to Bevo, this club can go and get f**ked.

Here is a tip - learn how to shut down and reduce the damage. Like a fire, smother the oxygen and contain the destruction. For me it was always put Dunkley in Gawn/Darcy’s hit zone and stop the other 2 midfielders hoping for the perfect tap from English……maybe get West in there now?

That and play McComb in the seconds.
McComb will become your nightmare by becoming the best midfielder in the competition.REPENT BRISDOG! McComb for the BROWNLOW IN 2023!!!

He's not my whipping boy, why the **** would you say that?

He's a VERY good player, and could easily go to elite level but the two things holding him back from that are his defensive work at stoppage, and his shoddy disposal. He averaged 4.6 clangers and 6.7 turnovers from a ratio of 8.6 / 20.7 contested / uncontested possessions. You think that's anywhere near remotely good enough?

But just say yeah nah and some bullshit again.

Maybe your expectations for a player his age are unrealistic, considering what he has achieved so far?

Yeah Smiths good far outweighs his bad at this stage, 100% he needs to tidy up his disposal and eliminate some of the miskicks but he has 20+ kicks a game, the bad ones stick in the mind. The reason so many of his disposals are uncontested is because he makes them that way by bursting out of congestion and taking the ball to the outside.

It’s just mental for him, once he’s cleared congestion he needs to focus, slow down and dispose of the footy quickly - or hand it off to someone whose in a better position to do that.

Blokes a gun though and will be one of the best mids in the comp within a few years

I wouldn't imagine asking him to kick a football and hit the intended target more than 50% of the time would be asking too much, regardless of age.

Thing is these are contested / uncontested POSSESSIONS, not DISPOSALS. So he's getting the majority of his disposals under little to no pressure and still shanking them.

He's not horrendous by any stretch, but anyone thinking it doesn't need significant work is just an idiot.

Im ok with Bailey Smiths propensity for running hard and bombing long. I like the way it balances out Jack Macraes propensity for plodding along and delivering dinky little kicks into the forward 50. Im also ok with never again having to watch Lachie Hunter struggle to kick the ball beyond 35 mtrs or squib the easiest set shots at goal imaginable.

Let the man run and carry and deliver it long to our tall boys! We’re not gonna always be able to pinpoint passes inside 50.

You'd think Bailey will be more damaging this year solely because he will always have a second AFL standard forward target. We spent most of the year with that role filled by Cordy/Schache/Khamis

Exactly.
Even if that entails kicking it as long and high as you can to one of Lobb/Astro.

He is a beautiful kick when he puts his foot through it, can cover 60m comfortable. Would much rather he bombs it inside 15-20m of our goal rather than try hit up a forward with a 15-20m bullet 45m on the boundary line.

I think we can all live with regular long bombs to a 50/50 contest, it's the long bombs to the clear advantage of the opposition that need to be minimised.

In fairness, that is partially down to Baz and partially down to our forwards getting to good spots
