Training Preseason 22-23

Being an optimistic dog, I Just had a look at the flag and Brownlow odds 224/1 for the dogs and Bont pretty appealing and why not the treble with Astro for the Coleman that is paying 7,616/1.

Flag plus Bont Brownlow
Have $2 on it and pays $604 haha

Edit - and if Naughton also wins the Coleman I win $42K ($5 bet). That'd be a very happy day on multiple fronts!

My biggest wish is that we have found a way to stop quality opposition pouring on an avalanche of goals in a very short time. Has been a problem since 2021 (notably the grand final but also multiple times last season). If the team wants to compete for a flag it has to be fixed imo.

Teams getting a run on and being difficult to stop has been a theme of the AFL for the last couple of seasons. We did have the problem where we'd be completely uncompetitive in the middle when English left the ground so hopefully Lobb will help with this.

JJ with a calf injury and in doubt for round 1 as per afl site this morning. Did we know this?
Hasn’t been in full training for a while. Didn’t the same thing happen last year? Ended up missing about six games 🙁

Is fringe best 22 for mine but still annoying this has happened for the second season running.

It's not great news for him. Calf injuries in older players are a tell tale sign of career ending. JJ has had soft tissue injury issues in the past but at this point they're seemingly catching up to him and not allowing any continuity in training or playing.

Adam Treloar (ankle) has been the concern across the pre-season but he is set to play in Saturday's intra-club in Ballarat, putting him on course to play in round one. Cody Weightman tweaked his adductor last week but is a chance to play this weekend, while Tim English (hamstring) is back in training after an interrupted few weeks. Jason Johannisen is sidelined with a calf and in doubt for round one.

Who's flying
Hard to go past Aaron Naughton this pre-season. The spearhead has banked a full summer after being impacted by niggles in 2022. Naughton also looks set to benefit from the addition of Rory Lobb and an improved Jamarra Ugle-Hagan. English had been flying before a couple of setbacks, while Tom Liberatore has been a standout in match sim.

Well, this is new
Josh Bruce
has returned to where it all started in defence, following the arrival of Lobb. The former Saint and Giant is fighting for a spot against Liam Jones, Alex Keath and Ryan Gardner.

Pre-season games
Match sim:
Saturday, February 25 v Western Bulldogs (intraclub) @ Mars Stadium, Ballarat, 11am AEDT
Practice match:
Saturday, March 4 v North Melbourne @ Ikon Park, 1.10pm AEDT

And another thing...
On the eve of the season, the big question is where will Sam Darcy play in 2023? The Rising Star contender has spent most of the summer training down back, but has kicked plenty of goals in recent match sim sessions when swung forward. Not a bad problem to have if you are Luke Beveridge. – Josh Gabelich

I'm not convinced by fringe, I think he's very clearly in the best side. No JJ means a hell of a lot more Vandermeer.

The only other person I can think of when his name is mentioned the next word is where is in Sam's case it is Where is he going to be playing, the other persons it is Where is and the clue is he also wears red, white and blue.

Surprised Naughton got a mention. Has been reasonably quiet this pre season according to most

I’d be surprised if any of these journos were at Skinner Reserve for more than 10 mins if at all. The previous one of these write ups was suspiciously like Inside the Kennel’s reports. Facebook and club media doubtless help write the article . Or maybe Chat GPT

Exactly.

A lot of these journos are guessing.

Disagree. A fit JJ is an asset that adds a lot to our side.
-We have no players who cover the ground as well as he does (at speed). Maybe a fully fit B.Smith?
-He's one of the few that can reliably hit a goal from 50m.

JJ is best 18 when fit & healthy.

We don't have another player like him. With his speed in attack & defense who is also amazing below his knees and can kick goals in big moments in games.

For the importance's of how the team functions and outside of our key talls and gun midfielders I'd have him ahead of:

Caleb
Treloar
Vandermeer
B.Williams
Roark Smith
Hannan
Scott
McNeil

I think his speed has dropped drastically, whatever burst he once had is long gone. He is an asset to the team as he can plug a lot of holes and is a well liked member of the group.

Agree. Another way to put it is we brought in Baker to acknowledge and help rectify our lack of speed. Baker is young and a nice build (like a sprinter) but he's also a reject from another club. JJ - though past his best - has experience, speed and has performed at the top level for a decade, including a NSM.

Now we might have always planned to play them both but if it's one or the other I'm picking JJ every time. At least until Oskar demonstrates he's a much improved player to the one that was shown the door by Melbourne.

If I remember correctly missed a lot more than 6 games. I don’t recall him coming back until well into the 2nd half of the year. Seemed weird as did a minor calf in the Melbourne warm up and then turned into a 10+ week injury.

Marra is next to Bruce, mostly blocked out by the person in the way, but you can see his shoulder. Clarke looks like a prep kid in his first school photo. Jones and Bruce will be hard to distinguish from a distance.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned but how scary is the fact that Darcy is already clearly taller than Lobb, who is a giant. 😍 Is there a better trio of 207+ players in the league?
