Can you believe the board gave the job to Primus instead of Chris Scott, Sanderson or Mcartney?

WOW!
(I was OS at the time, no idea they passed over those three)

I feel sorry for Primus. Everyone i've spoken to who knows him says he's a genuinely top bloke.

Unfortunately he's the scapegoat here. In this instance, it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys.
Surely he would have known what he was getting himself into though.

When there's only eighteen of these jobs, I genuinely think that they're blind to the task ahead. I don't recall many prospective coaches knocking back an interview (Buckley at North, which was a pretty exceptional circumstance).

Sure, you could move back to an assistant's job or the media, but think of an example like Knights. No matter what he does for the rest of his life, he'll be judged on what he did in two and a half years at Essendon and hated by the majority of Essendon supporters. Or you could become an ongoing punchline, like 'List Expert' (or whatever they call him), Wallace.

I feel sorry for Primus, he took on a tough gig. The club needs money and players and a board that will carry out due diligence and appoint an experienced coach. Much respect for the job Williams did while he was there, it couldnt have been easy.

I'm a proud Port but yesterday was the worst day for the club, since last year when they lost against GC. Primus is gone - what is that going to prove? He should never have been appointed at the start. Can you believe the board gave the job to Primus instead of Chris Scott, Sanderson or Mcartney?

Scott is on record saying he actually accepted the job but we couldnt meet his demands. We are ahead of the Dogs so dont know why McCartney would have been the saviour.

Simon Goodwin next coach? Adelaide boy. They need someone from outside this time.

Also, I wonder if Boak might rethink his alleged commitment to staying with Port.

Its a shame for Primus because he is genuinely a bloody good bloke. Always up for a chat, always positive. Its not all his fault, but he certainly needs to shoulder the blame for a good percentage of whats happened.

The club needs to put their hand up and say we did the wrong thing. Duncanson needs to leave immediately - he reappointed Choco and then appointed Primus. Arguably the two worst decisions in the clubs long history. To appoint Primus and then give him an SANFL reserves level coaching group was ludicrous.

But in the end, Primus is the one in charge of motivating the players, developing the players and coming up with a gameplan that will win games of football. 8 games in 2 years isnt good enough in any standard. To lose to Gold Coast from 40 points up, and lose to GWS who hadnt been close to a win for 2 months isnt anywhere near good enough. You listen to him try and explain his gameplan and its like listening to a 10 year old trying to explain quantum physics. We havent been near AFL standard in terms of fitness in either year he was coach. Our skills this year are rock bottom in the league and consdiering we play a largely uncontested game plan, thats a horrible, horrible position to be in.

He couldnt continue. Great bloke. Inspirational leader on the field. Couldnt coach. Hes not the first.

Primus has been hard done by IMO if this is true

Port simply have a rubbish list, there recruiting has been terrible and they needed to have a major clean out when Primus came on board, instead they are throwing away second round picks on rubbish players like Renouf and wasting compensation picks (forgot the guys name but he's crap).

Ports troubles go deeper then simply the head coach.

Wasn't Rehn interviewed for the Adelaide job? Seems more suited for a specialist assistant role, rather than the head coaching gig. Still, they'll be more Melbourne then Adelaide next year, even if they do sign a very good senior coach.

Reckon Josh Francou will get a look?

Think that they should go for an experienced coach who can bring some experienced assistants with him. But don't think that any of the current coaches are out of contract?

Failing that, an assistant coach that has been to a couple of different clubs.

Needs to be someone not from South Australia.

Suma is off limits :p

Don't think Primus was up to it. The playing group are the ones at fault though and again it's the coach who loses his job.
Port need a hard experienced coach at this stage.

That's what happens when you have a jobs for the boys approach. Primus may well have the basics for what it takes to be a senior coach, but he wasn't ready and lacked exposure to anything bar footy the port way. This nepotism has now ruined the career of a favourite son of the club and left the club in disarray - at a time when they literally can't afford such turmoil.

Surely he would have known what he was getting himself into though.
Wonder if the board kept the promises they would have made to him.
Many clubs have promised change then discovered powerful cliques that refuse to relinquish power no matter what happens to the club.
Eddie had to sack all the voluntary positions when he came to power at the Pies. Those people hated change and the loss of power.
