Maybe the club feels with Goldstein/McKay and development from within Essendon can make 2nd week of the finals.

This weeks game is important against a red hot Sydney

Bumping this thread.

Well folks, looks like in his last year as list manager the Dodo finally pulled it off.

Gun KPD in his prime: McKay for free is a really underrated signing. The list is humming and sadly actually look dangerous this year.

Could we see him change his mind and return to the helm? Let's hope so.

Wot.

Bro it's April wait until winter sets in and then you'll see a floodlight in the sky with Adrian's face and immediately every essendon player will have their talent sucked from then ala spacejam and we will take our rightful place at 10th on the ladder

Everyone wanted Ben McKay. It's not like Dodoro plucked him out of obscurity!

We all know how the system works - Essendon, Collingwood and Richmond get first dibs on every single Free Agent or 'gettable' player because of the 'big games in front of big crowds' thing that no one else can offer.

The intern could literally recruit for these clubs.

The challenge isn't landing them for these clubs, it's knowing which ones you actually should recruit.

there's an element of getting the deal done too.
his rep is largely built on the narrative he wants to eat his cake and have it too, and the stories that go with those deals;

Shiel required Dan richardson to get the 2nd first rounder involved
Blocked on the Daniher deal by Tanner/Campbell
Dunkley had to go for overs
Vozzo getting the additional cash to get McKay unmatched.

take with a grain of salt

My largest gripe relates to your final point - the list strategy.

Since '07 we've drafted 2x KPF's in the first rd. Daniher was a F/S and Caddy last year as his reign on the list was reduced
KPD's we've taken ridley, Hurley, pears, francis, reid, cox. All whilst the failed forward projects were playing back.
Rucks and small forwards have all largely been projects (Cahill, Mosquito, Tippa, Fantasia, Guelfi, Snelling, Davey's, Menzie).

having Vozzo and Scott run the roost has been a godsend.
1st change they get us an AFL quality ruckman (albeit 37yo), small forward and a full back with some girth.

He can sell the club, manage the cap and ID the talent fairly well.
But close to 2 decades and no evidence he can build a competitive list.

The side is going no where until they show they can restrict transition through good set ups behind the footy and consistently apply the requisite forward pressure to allow those set ups to function.

We’ve been propped up by being a dominant league best at centre clearances. Winning them by over 5 a game which I assume is more due to a small sample size and will likely normalise as the season goes on.

Not to be all doom and gloom the forward line is looking very dangerous and the idea of swapping Heppell for Ridley is exciting

I’ve said repeatedly, 2024 is about building chemistry and cohesion and those 19-23yo’s playing more football. 2025 should be the year they start to go up the ladder.

Mc Kay was a no brainer. Both he and Dursma won them the game Saturday. They’re already paying their way and it’s only round 3. Goldstein has been fabulous whilst Gresham is was excellent against the Swans and is providing them another forward option.

Midfield is now becoming a weapon, and they said their midfield was never going to be potent because they don’t have a bigger bodied mid… Well, they do. Setterfield and Durham, with Perkins have changed the mix. ‘You all’ need to catch up as they’ve quietly found a much better mix with more rotations whilst the footy world were asleep.

Anyhow, they need to build chemistry and that will help improve the defensive stuff which is the big area of weakness and opportunity. And a small forward is still a gap, notwithstanding the Davey boys getting experience building their craft in the VFL.
