Just want to drop by and say congratulations. That was the gutsiest win i've seen for a long time. The effort for Salopeck to take the mark and goal after getting laid out in the First Quarter was sensational.

Also, Tredera, A bloke i've never really rated was outstanding last night. His tackle on Jones and the shepherd on Selwood were the 1%ers that decided the game last night and he was a sen-****ing-sational leader.

And Peter Burgoyne, could he look any more like Andrew Mcleod running off the half back line? Some of his play last night was absolutely exceptional! Ditto Troy Chaplin, i always assumed his best case scenario was serviceable 3rd defender a la Bishop but last night he was awesome!

I'm hoping we get the chance to play you in a couple of weeks:thumbsu:

Well going by the type of anti Port posts from Hawthorn supporters on the main board I's say most of them are pooing themselves atm. :thumbsu:

Reading between the lines, the posts are along the lines of "you lucky bastards" we shouldn't be the ones playing Vs the Crows kind of thing. Bunch of sooks. :D

I have to disagree this time Andre.
In 2001 to 2004 I would have agreed with you. There were times that once the pressure got past a certain point we would not be able to find a way back.
Nowadays we are still capable of working our way back into the game no matter how the game is going.
Not just the last few weeks either, it has been something we have been working towards from the very first game of the year.
We have a good blend of youngsters with no fear coupled with a bunch of players that were members of the St Kilda prelim.
That prelim was oh so important. We can talk about the history of the club all we like, but having players in the team that are part of that history is where the good habits get passed on. Father to son who then passes on to his son who does the same etc. Not from the son reading about his Great Grand Father in books.

Yeah I wouldn't have called us brittle last night. At worst our decision making and last disposal going into the F50 was what hurt us. But we were strong in defence and ran the ball well thru midfield. And this was a finals game with huge psychological and physical pressure attached. I thought we held out superbly through the rough patches, and even when we fell 4 goals behind, it was just a break here, a bounce of the ball there. It was just that kind of game. To drag ourselves back into it from that point against a WCE side with their finals experience and tails up was a huge effort.

IN-TER-EST-ING

I know i'm going to go down in flames for saying this so let me prefix with "Thanks to last night I developed a new appreciation of him"

I've always found Tredera to be a) a selfish footballer more concerned with his own stats then the team and b) Extremely overrated in game style. Lets face it he was primarily a lead up forward who took alot of chest marks on the Wing. There's nothing wrong with playing like that and every team needs someone who does that. It's just when the media was hailing him as one of the Greatest CHF's of all time it irked me as i just considered him a rather one dimensional lead up player. However alot of this could be antipathy from watching him destroy the Crows so many times during your 8 games in row or such showdown streak:eek:

But having said that last night he turned my opinion of him around. He did not go searching for the easy kicks and was quite willing to sacrifice himself for the team. It was an outstanding game by him and obviously fatherhood agrees with him :thumbsu:

Also feel free to shoot back with OMG Welsh is only a lead up player and much worse at it. I agree ;)

I thought we were anything but brittle last night.

Our defence actually held up incredibly well - Chaplin, The Grew, Toby, Peter, Wilbur, Surj and Carlile all did their jobs - about 5 mins of madness in the third quarter but other than that, some really desperate, lungeing efforts and tackles.

Our midfield/forward group were the ones with the yips for the frst 70mins of the game. Having said that it was the ability of Tredders, Westy, Mots and Ebo to get into the game that eventually won it for us.

Tredrea had a super inspiriational 2nd half, but he needs to bring that footy with him for all 4 qtrs in the prelim. with his presence at half forward, even if he isnt kicking a lot of goals, if he is providing presence and a strong contest then we are hard to beat

I guess we all have impressions of players from other clubs that don't gel with how their supporters see it. Tredrea is to Port supporters a huge team man, some of his gives and goal-assists and hard work are memorable. I'd say tho, those 450 goals he's kicked from a wing are a pretty big effort.;)

Yeah, agree.
To us Port supporters, at least here on BF, the goal assists whilst kicking goals himself are the thing that made him so good, and will make again with a pre season under his belt. His willingness to sacrifice his game has never been questioned on this board, it was just an accepted part of his game since he did that again and again. He has been totally unselfish from day one, an inspirational captain.
wrt his image being portrayed as totally the opposite on the main board, well that is just a case of jealousy Vs any good player from other teams coupled with the "if you throw enough mud eventually some will stick" theory.

PB - who'd have thought 4 - 5 years ago we'd call him a player to stand up under finals pressure?! A top game last night.
Exactly - stack up the premiership (where he could have easily won the Normie), with last night (they're the ones that stand out, there may be others), and he's a hell of a big game performer.

Yep - it was a great game to be at. There was plenty of Energy in the crowd and on the field. Looking at the scoreboard and seeing only 1 goal during the 2nd quarter was a worry - but for most of it WCE were only 1 goal in front of us.

That 3rd quarter was a real worry - after the 4 goals they kicked. However, it was obvious that we were running over the top of them in the latter half / time on of each quarter. It was worrying to see Brogan go down - but relieved when Cousins went off. Didn't like the attitude of a lot of the crowd with their comments - how would they feel if it was Burgoyne?

The 4th quarter was great - the question was not if, but when. When they hit the lead, the crowd erupted - it was huge outpouring of emotion. Like being at the Geelong game, except there were 37k more of us ;)

You just knew that if they held possession, we would win - however Cornse's 50m penalty did give me the yips. But let's not forget that we are the city of churches

Magnificent win and so, so much to love about the way we are going. Like any true obsessive I went to the game, back to the club, then home to watch the replay - well the final 1 1/2 quarters anyway. I crawled into bed about 2am. Today I am exhausted and have a really sore throat from yelling. Really good analysis on here already, but here is my take.
The defensive unit as a whole was fantastic. Not just in stopping the Eagles attack but also in their resolve to not even concede a point, and in consistently rebounding at speed. Chaplin, Pettigrew, Carlile, Wilson, P Burgoyne, Thurstans, Surjan - take many bows. And yes Peter Burgoyne was the undisputed star of the night.
Salopek is becoming more important to us with every game and depending on when Tredders retires I could see Sal as our next captain. His temporary absence was as crucial to us as the absence of Cousins later on was to the Eagles.
Tredders, welcome back it has been far too long. Great trick goal (twice!), superb shepherd and tackle. Missed set shot from in front - the whole package.
Brittle? Yes we are. You can't turn it off and on quarter by quarter or game by game as we do and deny it. But if the cost of consistency is to become dour, robotic game f***ers like the Crows then I'll take the grey hairs and the electric excitement thanks.

Gee whiz.

We've all heard the 'doesn't take contested marks'/'leads to the wing all the time' falsehood before (behind Richo is the leading exponent of the contested grab this decade), but selfish and concerned with his own stats?!

In what universe?!

He always works for the good of the team with slick gives and will always look for a teammates in a superior position - it's why of all the key forwards he finished either #1 or #2 in goal/score assists between 2000-5 before the knee went.

If you can be bothered, take a look at this compilation from seasons 2002 and 2004 alone:

Will further dispel a few myths on top of last night's performance.

....

Thanks dt, you are quickly becoming my favorite person on here. The "Power to the people" song, how do I get my hands on this... FANTASTIC

damn close game last night.

Not a great game in terms of football, but that's the nature of the sport.

Port Adelaide still have to learn how to "save" and "defend" games. They get themselves into a lot of trouble trying to do it.

Was great last night. They kept playing it in snatches during the game and so it has a much stronger association for me now. Let us know when you work out how to get it. Have you tried the shop at the club?

Well call me biased but the resurgence came from the Territory boys. YEAH!!
Logan was the spark, he came on, chased, tackled, harassed, pissed them off, caused turnovers, kept us in the game at a time when they could have easily run away with it. Anyone that doesn't think we need a player like that in the side has got rocks in their heads.

I wonder if Tom even considers himself to be a Territorian. He grew up in SA, I know he spent quite a lot of time in the S-E including Naracoorte and Bordertown. I believe he moved up to the NT after his father got a shift through his work.

He no doubt played his first senior footy up in the Territory but obviously played junior footy at Glenelg given that he was aligned to them when we drafted him.

I cant speak for the guy but i'd say he thinks of himself as much South Australian as what he does Northern Territorian.

Lions dont choke! Would you think it fair to lose your earned home ground advantage in the Preliminary AND cop the shorter turn around for the granny? The Lions ran out of legs that year . Beaten by the AFL & a fresher side.Really look forward to next season;for the Lions to extract some revenge!Got close with a young list this year and with Bradshaw (70+ Goals 2006) back ,you can count on those Lions being there 08.Go the Non Victorian Clubs!

LOL thats actually quite funny given that its the AFL who are the very reason why the Lions were as successful as they were. Port Adelaide is a club built on tradition and success, and doesn't need handouts like Brisbane received, to succeed.
