Review R14: The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Sydney Swans

That is ludicrous. So ley me understand, when we played well attacked the ball and got hands on it first we were ahead in free kicks. When Sydney put the foot down, attacked the ball and got first hands (and Hinge our leader had a brain fade) it evened out. Yes I clearly see how umpiring is to blame
To be fair and in the context of last night's game only, I thought the umpiring was actually deplorable when we were winning in the first half... but the umpiring quickly became irrelevant when we decided to let sydney kick 10 goals in a row. That's all on us I'm afraid.

To understand why we’re in this predicament you just have to look at 2018 draft. We started trade period with better picks than port.

We draft Chayce Jones and McHenry. Port drafted Rozee and Butters.

We have no upcoming midfielders, rucks or key forwards. Even though we’ve missed finals 7 years running.

Our only good players were traded in.

The rebuild has failed. We need to start again but this time without the good but ageing senior players. Could be looking at North Melbourne level mediocrity for a few years as old players retire and young new players aren’t up to it.
You don't count Soligo and Rankine as quality up and coming midfielders? And Rachele averaged 20 disposals and kicked 10.10 when he played in the midfield for the first 8 weeks of last season but Nicks somehow wanted him to play a "different" role this year, we are still missing a powerful bust midfielder (need Pedlar to be that player or this year's draft pick) and Thilthorpe to step up next year as the KPF if he isn't leading the ruck and Welsh to developed into a top 10 KPF pick.

Good: Good return for Murray, Hamill has genuine leg speed, Jake Soligo is a good player

Evertyhing:

Michelanney created a turnover at half forward, the Sydney player ran off, MM chased him down and tackled him, not one other player even bothered. They just all guarded space.

Our workrate is a joke, look at Sydneys players and how hard they work.
Our defensive pressure is a joke, we just turtle in defence and hope for the best.
The complete inability to clear a defensive line and move the ball out.
Laird is a joke who hack kicks everything and missed a 25M target. I expect that of Dowling in his 2nd game, not Laird in his 238th game. 34 of the most god awful, pointless, ineffective possessions known to AFL.

Hamill has genuine leg speed which he appears he isn't allowed to use for some reason? It should be that every time he has the ball and has 2 metres of space he goes and goes hard.

Strachan isn't an AFL player, he got destroyed by Grundy. ROB + TT is the best bet.

I don't think Nicks should be sacked but what's around him is rubbish; Burns, Godden and Reid need to find new jobs.

Nicks needs to get down to the boundary line and coach from there instead of sitting with his head in his hands while muttering stuff to an unknown boys club member beside him.

A new senior assistant needs to come in with a better approach, someone fresh out of the game with ideas from successful programs (not losing a grand final by 17 goals type of successful but actual success). Say if Scott Pendlebury retired this year he would be the target (he would never come here but you get the idea).

This is real 2011 Neil Craig stuff right now where he just sat there chewing gum angrily refusing to believe Geelong had changed everything in 2008.

I went to the game tonight because my Dad had just got back from OS, but that is me done for the year unless there are changes off field.

I’ve been to 3 away games this year and every home game, that’s enough of my money wasted on this shit. I’ve got better things to do than waste my time sitting in the cold watching a club at rock bottom.

Also been to 3 away games and didn’t even bother last night.

Whilst that supposedly leader Murphy is in the side, I’m not going to bother to go.

ROB and Keane should be 1 on 1 for the next 2 weeks and just spit balls in the air in for them to go at.
ROB Marking practice and Keane Spoiling practice.

I want Nicks sacked immediately  :grimacing:.
Tonight :madv1:.

Won't happen.

Blind Freddy can see that he is Coaching us to Nowhere, but the people who gave him that unwarranted, mystifying, ridiculous 2-year extension are the same idiots who now have to sack him.
It would be an admission that they got it wrong.
Very wrong, so wrong that on principle alone, they'd have to resign.

They won't do that.
You know what, if they did announce he is being stood down this week, whilst we would be worried who they would line up to replace him with, at least it would show they can try to correct course when they have made an obvious error.

The rhetoric from Olsen and Silvers runs entirely contra to that though so we are stuck with him for the forseeable

Well, maybe wait and see before making that call.......
Of course. I’m merely saying if anything is going to cause him being a bust, it’s certainly not going to be lack of talent. Only something like a injury will stop him. And apparently big fellas often find it hard to come back from meniscus injuries if his severity. Only going on the medial/knee rep who spoke to surgeon

I didn't watch most of the last, but I think Keane lost the game. He should never play at FB again. He was hopeless.
Changes were in fact made on Amartey, despite comments on here. According to the commentators, Murray was shifted onto him after his second quarter, and Keane went back onto him when Murray was rested: big mistake!

A couple of more general observations: if we take out the oppo's red-time goals, we would have been a mile in front towards the end of the third. Together with our lying down in the last, does this mean there is something wrong with our fitness, or is it just the inability to apply pressure for a full quarter?

In fact, the manner of the loss was pretty predictable. When teams rely on manic pressure to vanquish the oppo, they generally run out of puff early and get run over, not just us. I think this is just one manifestation of there being so many cracks that that there is just not enough paper to cover them.
Early on amartey beat butts 1 v 1 in a marking contest, was too strong and goaled. Then keane was moved to him and it was a disaster. Murray should have gone there straight away as he had the aerial ability to go with him. I would have also given borlase a crack as he has not done much wrong as a key defender for us.

Jordan Dawson had 0 clearances
Tagged out of effectiveness by a player the Swans identified and targeted off season. Got him for free as well.

Dawson must have trudged off last night wondering whether coming home really was the most sensible decision back in 2021. Luckily for us he came home, probably our only real leader.

Too much Rachelle hatred by some. Imagine playing half forward and consistently being 3 on 1 because your nuffty coach plays an outnumber at the contest around the ground. Rachelle must be soft because he can't consistently beat/outmark players and gets caught holding the ball. Our coach is ruining this guy, that's how we rebuild remember
How are people ragging on Rachele, he literally out marked Grundy at one point. He also had our most tackles

I honestly think we're in for a very rough decade, and as supporters we need to strap ourselves in, unless serious change happens soon. Half our list aren't AFL standard, and the guys that are are going to age out before we play another final at this rate. This whole club needs a rebuild from top to bottom, and that always gets ugly.
[/QUOTE]

Oh great, so I’ll be turning up at games in a wheelchair having got permission for a night out by the aged care home.

Something to look forward to over the next decade and beyond.

Maybe you are right, the work rate of our players is pathetic. We are just a club that never ever makes people accountable for the shit that’s been delivered. We should have know that we were going to have a poor year when they announced the leadership group. There is no accountability from anyone, therefore everyone does what they want and now it’s turned to what we have. I completely piss weak football club from Olsen to our worse player McHenry.
Yep . Its our DNA .
This will never change until the club acknowledges the mistakes made
Dont read the tweet about Olsens dinner then if you wanted accountability from the top

Hopefully via the fans backlash it's dawning on Silvers and Olsen that patience has run out.

Time with a young list wears thin in the 7th year out of finals. We're still a young list and young team because our rebuild hasn't worked (or even occurred) and we will be young for years because we're investing in junk that won't be there now.

Good:

I was out for my bday dinner so didn’t watch a minute of the game

Bad: All the comments from my mates excited at the first 1/4, telling me what I’m missing

Ugly: checking my phone over the last qtr to see us go from 3pts up to 3pts down to….not kicking another goal

Happy Birthday :)

I guess :D

42,000 at Adelaide Oval last night tells me Silvers and Olsen think everything is A OK.
