Well, we got well beaten by the best team in the league. To be expected, but it was still a bit disappointing to see us not take to the conditions too well. The second quarter was excellent to get right back into the game, but the third quarter was horrid. Far too much handball and not of the creative kind but the 'oh shit, gotta get rid of it' kind. We reverted back to the deer in headlights team from the Primus era for about 20 minutes there.
Our effort was there. Our skills let us down. We probably did go in one tall too short, which we expected after the selections, but im not sure Hombsch would have changed the margin too much. Unfortunately we lacked two way runners today. Hawthorn had too many players who were free all over the field after we turned the ball over. They backed their teammates to win the ball and when they did, they were free.
Really thought we'd see a hard, tough, balls to the wall tough match as we played against Sydney and Collingwood but we were trying to be far too cute. There were very few quick kicks forward. It was all trying to be too precision perfect and it was never going to come off. Thought we really missed Westhoff today. Would have given us a much needed tall option up forward to help out the other two.
In the end, im not too unhappy with the result. 2 wins against Sydney and Collingwood, pushed Essendon till 5 minutes left and a 7 goal loss against Hawthorn. Thats a couple of strokes under par for what I expected going into this month. Now we just have to make sure we consolidate next week and make sure we win the games we are expected to from now on.
Best players...I thought Gray was probably our best 4 quarter player. Moore had a ripping first half but fell out of it. Thought Jonas worked hard all day and beat his opponent. Lobbe worked well in the ruck again. Monfries alright up forward. Boak had 2 1/2 great quarters.
Ill say it again to finish off too many handballs. Kick to handball differential for some of our players: Boak -8, Cornes -5, Thomas -13, Wines -7, Stewart -13. Not the day for that sort of thing lads.
Player Reviews:
Boak - Great at times, frustrating at others. His third quarter was very poor. His first half was alright and his final quarter was alright too. Just too many handballs. Too many needless 1-2s. Not all his fault and he did play well overall.
Cornes - Tagged Mitchell all day and kept him out of it for much of the day. Thought he was better with the ball than he has been, but just didnt have much of a positive influence on the result. Still, he did his job.
Ebert - Frustrating today as well. Was very good in parts but his disposal and decision making the last two weeks have really let him down from what we know he can do. Didnt seem to handle the pressure as well as he could have.
Gray - Thought he was our best player. A goal and seemed to be involved in almost all of our scores in the first half. Was clever. His last two weeks have been Gray back to where we know he can play.
O'Shea - Got a bit of the ball but struggled against Gunston, was alright when on Bruest and overall was ok with the ball in his hands. Not his best day defensively though.
Lobbe - Ordinary early but was one of the players that helped to wrestle control of the game back in our favour in the second quarter. Played out the game well.
Monfries - Good again, two goals, though didnt have much influence in the second half.
Wingard - Sloppy but was consistent again and overall you'd think he was in our best players. Just lacked a bit of polish today
Thomas - Thought he was just ok. Some noticeable errors that you always get with him, but he got his hands on the ball.
Moore - Thought he was our second best player at half time. Had a really good half in getting the ball out and getting those quick kicks forward. Unfortuantely his teammates didnt follow suit in his game style. He went missing a bit after half time, but still thought overall he's continued his good run of form.
Broadbent - Got his hands on it enough but thought he lacked influence and run today. Wasnt the same Broady we've seen over the last month.
Wines - A bit too like Thomas today. Got his hands on it, too many handballs. Didnt mind his game, just wasnt good.
Butcher - Liked his attack on the ball and he took some strong grabs considering the ball would have been slippery. Just needs to finish off in front of the sticks. Deserved another goal than what he got.
Schulz - Strong start, but really played no influence in the result after half time.
Pittard - I'll repeat my concerns from two weeks ago in that I just dont believe he will become a long term AFL player. Doesnt have the natural smarts, nor the skills to become the player we wanted him to become. Thankyou Blair Hartley.
Carlile - Did the job on Hale. Hale barely saw it at all.
Jonas - Liked his game on a couple of different opponents. Thought he was the most assured with the ball of all our defenders.
Stewart - Poor on Breust early then beaten by Gunston for a bit, then back to Breust. Not his best game.
Hartlett - Did his bi-weekly disappearing act. 2 disposals 2nd quarter. 1 in the 3rd. Not near good enough. Doesnt work near hard enough. Absolute tradebait.
Trengove - Had Roughy for most of the game and thought he battled well considering his teammates threw him under the bus a number of times with either no support or turnovers. Needed to play tighter, but thought he was good with the ball going the other way.
Neade - Came on, kicked 2 goals with his 2 kicks. Efficient.
Logan - Barely even knew he was out there today. Not sure if thats a good or bad thing, but he seemed to defend well.
